Hi All. Did it matter which blend of Tea you used? I mean it's only for the fishes benefit so you dont want them getting too accustomed to the finest Darjeeling varieties do you? :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Hi All. Trouble is, you have all overlooked the fact that "Bugger", not baked beans again tonight. You wouldn't eat the same food week in week out so when you feed your fish, think They had flake last night, I'll give them daphnia tonight. Expensive versus cheap: You may well ask. Read the nutrional value on a packet of Brand "X" that costs $9.95 a packet as COLOUR ENHANCING FLAKES. Then read the nutritional Value on a packet of "AMAZON AQUARIUMS" El Cheapo fish food. The values are identical; and in some things better, but never worse. However, it is what is put into the mixture at manufacture that matters. Different foods that are added to the different cost products may also be different, but what those foods are "WE" are never given that information. But whatever you think is right, feed your fish plenty of variety, and a bit of live food whenever you can get it.

Hi All. I got that many in a tank that you only have to dip a 7.5cm net in there to catch 20 or so. If freight wasn't so expensive I'd send you some.

Hi All. The March meeting of the Club has been changed to 28th March at 7:30pm. 2 ALDINGA AVENUE STOKE This was to allow those who were thinking of going away for Easter the opportunity of not missing the meeting. "VISITORS FROM OTHER AFFILIATED CLUBS MOST WELCOME" T"he topic of discussion will be about the approaching winter with the inherent Power Outages" and what to do in an emergency. The practicle part of the meeting will be the making of a "Microworm" culture for the members.

Hi All. It is always a problem with prolonged power outages as to what to do for the best. As an afficionado of the "VERY OLD SCHOOL", I dont even know why so many are hoodwinked by so few as to the need for all the modern day paraphinalia that has become the norm for fishkeeping. Forty eight years ago a filter was a semicircular (quadrant) piece of plastic about 75mm deep that was suction cupped to the top corner of a tank, and used an airlift venturi principle to operate, and was "EASY to FIX UP". Non of these "High Powered Canister Filters", "Bio Noodles", Bio Balls", "Power Heads", "UV Sterilizers", plus all the medications that are used to increase the good bacteria levels. The KISS Principle worked then and it still to this day works for me. If people are going to use all these modern adornments, I would very strongly, and with expert knowledge suggest that they consider buying a LOW OUTPUT POWERED GENERATOR, even a "WHARE WHARI" one for about $100.00 that will run your tank in an emergency. Let's face it, it's coming on to winter and power outages "WILL HAPPEN" whether hobbyists like it or not.

Hi All No she laughed and said, "Doesn't he know the difference with boys and girls; and at his age". She said she will have a couple of her sons or daughters to keep you company on the way home.

Hi All. Thanks for that alanmin. No it's the "Mum". I may just have a couple to raffle at "Conference." Looking forward to seeing you in Nelson. I assume Sheryl is coming with you. .

Hi All. Thanks for that caper. I (him) not a her, avatar is the Female wild caught "Altum" angel that I used to breed from. My avatar doesn't show it very well but there are several more "Altum's" in there as well. This is the original picture we use on our letterhead. And taken from this my avatar. IMG]http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g71/amazonianfish/AdultAltumAngels.011007.jpg There are a lot of things to look for in ANY fish that you buy and if you want to breed those fish you must be more vigilant. Below is my latest aquisition, the TIGER STRIPED or ZEBRA Angel

Hi All. It's nice to see the registrations coming in for conference, an event which you may rest assured is going to be a great happening for all those attending. The accomodation will become a problem with the later registrations as you will not neccessarily get the room you ask for. It was decided by the committee at our meeting tonight that if there are too many requests for a particular room it will be either by first come, first served; or by ballot. At this point all those who have asked for a particular room have got what they asked for. :bounce: Please also consider sharing a unit with some of your fellow "Club" member/s.

Hi All DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE "POLYESTER EPOXY". It is neither food or water safe and will taint and contaminate all it touches for a very long time, even when dry. You can use the epoxy that is used with "DYNEL" cloth for boat building. Good Luck.

Hi All I have had similar dealings with things concerning "ERMA" and threatened to sue them, (ERMA) (through a lawyer and the courts). They soon backed down when they were served with a summons to appear in court and this included all my costs and disbursements. They paid up very quickly. Comany name removed. The damaging company was not mentioned above... so why quote one who may have had nothing to do with this......? Mod Bill. Good luck B & K.

Hi All. I would suggest that you leave the eggs with the parents. They may turn out to be great and not eat the eggs or fry. If you choose to you can remove the eggs and hatch them in an 18 x 9 x 9 inch tank with the slate on a 45 degree angle and the airstone an inch in front of the eggs with a gentle stream of bubbles rising in front of them. There only needs to be enough water to cover the slate and this can be raised an inch a day after about a week on brine shrimp. You're doing alright, keep it up. Good luck.

Hi All I take umbrage (and anything else not screwed down) to being considered as not knowing enough to give information to those using the forums when they ask for assistance. For your information IHBR I started keeping "Tropical Fish" at age 14; I am now 63 and only for a period of three years have I not had fish. I have imported Fish and Plants, I have owned, (and still do) a shop, and I am a very consistent breeder of many, many species of fish; Including the "rare" Altum, and Leopoldi angels, along with five other colour varieties. I suggest that your comments about reading a book was only a crude, crass generalisation, but as a lot of forum users are hobbyists you do yourself no credit with out a lot more substance and facts. I have books that have cost upwards of $200.00 but I think I know what I am doing so consider myself qualified to speak, without referring to a book. When you have read all the books in your local library contact me and I will loan you the same number again that are not in your library. Enjoy the forums and the hobby.

My Angels are getting grumpy with each other.
AMAZONIAN replied to kathiej's topic in Beginners Corner
Hi All As a regular and consistent breeder of angel's, I have got to know them and their little idiocincricies quite well.. You have FAR TOO MANY in the tank and I would suggest that you cut their numbers to no more than five in the tank. Hopefully a couple will pair off and then you can remove them to a breeding tank where they can become contientious parents. That will leave you a nice wee school of three who should get on quite happily in a tank that size. Good Luck. -
Hi All. I am breeding pure and "TRUE BREEDING" golden cobra guppy's. They have taken me a long time and a lot of culling and effort to get them pure and breeding true, but they are very nice fish. IF I was going to sell any, (and at this time I'm not) they would be sold for around $7.50 per fish. Yes the going price at any of the "usual" Pet Shops in the Nelson Province is around $14.00 each for common guppy's, regardless of sex and up to $17.95 in one Richmond pet Shop.

please tell me what you think about this tank for sale...

Hi All Yes HaNs, I HAVE BEEN TO CHINA  Several times on Aquaria product buying missions. And as I stated you can buy the same IDENTICAL item retail in chinese shops at less than 10% of the quoted US$ price for export. I did the calculations while I was there to bring in a few tanks but it was uneconomic even buying them retail, so I left it to the big boys (WHO supposedly can afford to import bulky items and also to stand by their choice of product). If you find my comments offensive HaNs then I suggest you talk to a few more small business owner operators who have dealt with the same people and then I will accept your apology for going off half cocked. I did not anywhere mention any specific make or "Brand Name", you decided I also meant your "ELCHEAPO". -

Hi All. I echo (LOUDLY) the sentiments of PPS. The tanks that are made in those countries are made at a very small price. I KNOW:........................My partner's, brother and sister were teaching "ENGLISH" at university level in China. They knew that I bred Tropicals so looked out for some "Bargains" for me. The prices that they emailed back with, to list a few were as follows. EXAMPLES: AQUA ONE 750 Professional Canister Filter.. RETAIL 250 yuan. HEATERS, All Wattages.. RETAIL 12 yuan. HANG ON FILTERS, All sizes..Average RETAIL 14 yuan. CHECK THE VALUE OF THE "Yuan" WITH THE BANK. The prices I was quoted by the "MANUFACTURER" was in United States Dollars. AQUA ONE 750.. WHOLESALE $39.00 HEATERS.. WHOLESALE $ 2.75 HANG ON FILTERS. "AVERAGE COST" WHOLESALE $ 7.95 Again check the value of the $US with a bank. QUESTION: Why do they quote a product at retail shops in China at one price (yuan) and then quote a wholesale price in $US to buyers. Is it because their communistic ways set them a lower price in their homeland with the overseas buyers paying for their low living standards which have the effect of lower prices? The people of that country are "GENERALLY" not worthy of trust and that is why I have a PERSONAL dislike of them and their business ethics. I HAVE NO INTENTION OF HIGHJACKING THIS THREAD; BUT, I WISH TO MAKE THE POINT THAT IN TODAYS MARKET PLACE , YOU TEND TO GET LESS THAN YOU PAY FOR. -
Hi All Everybody seems to have a bitch about these compressors except me. I run 4 of these units the two largest being 350 Liters / Minute, and the smallest, 45 liters / Minute to run my "Brine Shrimp Hatchery". That uses three 50mm X 20mm Cylindrical airstones. The model you need to run your twenty airstones is 100 Liters / Minute minimum and costs about $140.00; at "BEST" mates rates. Tasman Aquarium Club members who visit my house and the fishroom will tell you that my compressors dont make any more noise than a mouse munching rice bubbles. Sales Plug Removed. Use the Commercial Section To Advertise. Mod Bill. Good luck.

Hi All We stock the same "BRAND" and they come complete with light and filter. They want an extra $40.00:......they are thieves. The advertisement reads like it's from people, that I dont "PERSONALLY" trust. But you pays your money you take your chances. -
Hi All. Good idea. Lets start a thread for "Missing Species".
-
Hi All. In 1972 I imported 2500 (what was) Pelmetachromis thomasi; http://www.aquariumlife.net/profiles/af ... 100046.asp I entered the in the Canterbury Aquarium and Pond Society fish show in 1974 and got best in show. I even gave away the winning fish, plus about another twenty pairs to various people in Christchurch and some others that were at the show, hoping that I was distributing the species to maybe get some back at a later time if I needed to. I have been trying for the last four years to get some to get them going again, but so far to no avail. Unless there are some out there along with a lot of other "Lost" species the the hobby is in dismal shape and as hobbyists we should be looking to get these missing species going again.
-
Hi All. There must be some hobbyist out there that has some that they could spare; but if not I dont know where we could get them. Worth a bit of investigation. It looks like this is another "OLD FAVOURITE" that may be lost forever and taken off the "MAF ALLOWED LIST". I have said for many years now that it is up to us as hobbyists to keep these breeds going in NZ, as we cant afford to keep loosing species.
-
Hi All. It is an unfortunate state of affairs when you buy two or more "Really Good Looking" fish; take them home and breed them, and end up with all sorts of nondescript colours, patterns and even deformities. That is not to say don't do it; I had to start the same way and it just means that it takes an extra couple of generations to get the fish that "YOU THINK ARE THE PERFECT SPECIMENS." Jet "Black Lace Veiltails" are worth the time, effort and money. Good luck.
-
Hi All. What about "Egyptian Mouthbrooders" they are colourful when breeding; fit well in a community tank, easy to look after, only grow to 10 centimetres, and above all interesting to watch. Does anybody have any now? Good luck.
-
Hi All Read some of my earlier posts about breeding fighters. If you follow my example you will have fighters coming out of your ears in just two spawnings. But, Remember this well. The more fry you rear, the more jars in the fishroom to clean and feed.
