  1. Hi All. And I'm imagining that he's going to buy lots of raffles; and make the whole conference an astounding success, by shouting everyone drinks on Saturday night.   :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: You may as well keep hold of the "WOODEN SPOON" Wok.
  2. Hi All. I am going to supply an answer that you could expect from "WOK" or AMAZONIAN on a humourous day. I suggest that you check and make sure of the ethnicity of the father.
  3. Hi All, the large white stands cost @150.00 each and the blue stand $40.00. I thought that was a very reasonable price as the coating adds years to the life of the steel.
  4. Hi All, Have a look at the pic of mine in the post on TECHNICAL. The blue stand is made from 50mm x 25mm EWS steel. As you are only building it for a one tank height there will be no problem. Go for it and Good Luck.
  5. Hi All I suggest that you consider a welded steel stand and get it Powder Coated for long time use. This a a piccy of a couple of my tank racks.
  6. Hi All. The "Cut Off Date" for Accomodation bookings was today 18th April. If anybody still requires accommodation and hasnt booked it yet please email or PM me URGENTLY and I'll see what I can do to sort it for you. The host "Club's" are hoping that this will be the best conference yet and I would suggest that everybody tries to make an effort to attend. The fact that there are such a lot of knowledgeable people that you can talk to about your hobby is incentive enough to join us even if it's for the social hours.
  7. HI All Its about time that the people that have an interest in keeping tropical and tropical Marine fish got together and started attacking MAF. MAF are the messenger boys, for the "hide under the covers group ERMA:, a lot of academics who wouldn't know which way was up and do this "BECAUSE THEY CAN" Remember the "GLOW DANIO FIASCO IN CHRISTCHURCH?" If anybody is interested I can make available the reply I got from them to the questions I asked "UNDER THE OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT". Some of the answers leave a lot to be called honest or open. I would let the readers of those documents form their own conclusions.
  8. Hi All. Yes Heir, I have seen them myself in the shops, and it is those fish that are "Buggering" up the fish on sale in shops. You have to be sooooo careful when you buy fish from a shop as even first class looking fish can be flawed or carrying the faulty genes. This is exactly what happens when the "QUICK BUCK BREEDERS'" are able to sell fish to shops direct.
  9. Hi All. Fish get deformities 99% of the time by continual inbreeding and line breeding. You have to be very careful in selecting your breeding stock and EVERY Third spawning you should introduce new blood into the line. That is the surest way of producing good quality fish that are lacking in ant deformities or flawed genes that can cause deformities. It is also possible for "Guppy's" to be born with no apparent bend in their spine, but if they are from inferior stock then the deformity or the gene is there and bending of the spine will progress and become apparent within about 6 weeks. Tha is a reason that none of the fish I breed leave my Fishroom for at least 4 or 5 months.
  10. Hi All. Well noted cesarz. I only glimpsed the pic.
  11. Hi All. the "GRAVID" spot on the FEMALE livebearers is actually the "Peritoneal Wall" and located as shown in the above picture. As pregnancy progresses the spot increases in size. Just before delivery you will even be able to see the eyes of the unborn fry within the stomach of the female, through the Gravid Spot. By watching the development of newly born Guppy's, or other Live Bearers, you can see this spot developing as well as their normal growth. It is by noticing this spot that you can quickly remove any fry with no spot as they are invariably males.
  12. Hi All. I have just been back reading my own articles on the subject. HaNs; They dont breed Goldfish to get and use their hormones. They use it from the CARP, Cyprinus carpio. QUOTE FROM THE BOOK: Spawning is provoked by the intramuscular injection of (Synthetic) gonadatrophin. Also recommended is hypophysation of the male with natural carp hypophysis when the female is fully ripe - this is indicated by a greatly bulging belly of the female and by the restless swimming around the tank. I hope this clears up any disputes that come from those who are trying to be helpful but just dont quite cut it.
  13. Hi All. Yes it was posted by "ME", when someone asked about breeding loaches. YOU CAN BREED ANY FISH YOU WANT IF YOU USE THE SAME METHOD, WHICH I EXPLAINED. Pretty cheap shot really. It's obvious that the guy wanted some brownie points, but HE'LL NOT GET ANY from me; he's a fraud. If it had been done naturally then I'd scream it from the roof tops on his behalf.
  14. Hi All. Turn the stand upside down and sit it on the top of the tank. It should be a close fit all the way around. If the glazier is any good, he will have cut the glass perfectly which means the bottom and top will be parallel. When you put he stand up the right way in its position You can pack under the LOWEST legs to get it level, then put your board on top of the stand, then your poly sheet and then the tank. Check it for level before adding water. EWS steel which this is made of is very difficult to weld unless you have a TIG plant as it's so thin it warp very easily. When I make all steel stands, I weld adjustable feet into the bottom of the frame Tubing. Its a lot easier to adjust than by using packing. Good luck.
  15. Hi All. I suggets you go to a ROOFING SPECIALIST. I get mine from a guy in Christchurch and have never had the rust runoff you are talking about. I use it in ALL my Angels breeding tanks. There should be no steel to cause the rust. Maybe you used a wire brush for cleaning and a bit of that got stuck to the slate. Good luck
  16. Hi all Yes it is "LEGAL" to keep Snapper that are of legal size. That applies to any marine fish on the MAF list in NZ. It is illegal to be in possession or keep undersized fish though. The water changes that a snapper needs is huge, I had a mate who was a commercial fisherman that kept 4 of them in a 10,000 litre concrete tank that was modified so as you could see them. He had to pipe water 200 metres to keep it going. He also had seahorses and scallops in there as well.
  17. Hi All. Get an ELECTROMAGNETIC ONE. I run three of them from 30 Litres a minute up to the largest at 480 Litres a minute. PM me I have a very good used one.
  18. Hi All. On the very humorous side. The cross between "MAN & MONKEYS" could be called politicians.
  19. Hi All, I have got them breeding and they are slowly building up their numbers. I am now working on getting the Platinum Mollies to survive and breed in Nelson water.
  20. Hi all. I have said on MANY, MANY OCCASSIONS: that if you buy supposedly "WILD CAUGHT FISH", you have no idea what the F1 offspring are going to look like. YOU DO HOWEVER, EXPECT THEM TO PRODUCE AT LEAST 50% FRY WITH CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PARENTS. If you buy fish from the LPS then you may NEVER KNOW just what the offspring are going to look like. The reason is that there are too many people out there trying to make a quick buck breeding "EASY" fish of nondiscript parentage and different gene pools. WHAT I AM SAYING IS DONT TRY TO SECOND GUESS NATURE. YOU'LL ONLY LOOSE. I have Angels that breed from a Black Female and a Koi Pearlscale Male. The offspring will never see the outside of my fishroom as every one that survived ( the whole 9) has a pectoral fin deformity. The cross resulted in the death of 98% of the fry within a week of being laid. There had been about five different spawnings of this pair. I consider my skills amazing at beating mother nature from killing off the few that I have.
  21. Hi all. Nature is a very wise parent, and the only way that they would cross is by artificial insemination. All species have a certain "Type" of copulatory organ, designed so that natural crosses cant occur. I'm not giving a lesson on the "Birds & Bees" but; if you look closely at the gonopodium of Guppy's and Leopards, the first difference you see is the length. Secondly you will observe the "END"of the gonopodiums of both species; they are different. The reason is so as that there can be no penetration of the other specie. The angles of movement that the different gonopodiums have also stops them cross breeding; i.e: some species can only move their gonopodiums left, or right, while others can move it left, right and forward. All those facts, and the fact that in nature the species dont meet in the wild stops normal cross breeding. It can only be done artificially and then there is the possibility of genetic deformities. Good luck in the laboratory.
  22. Hi all, the maximum number that I have achieved is 13 from a big mum, from those only 7 survived. I then made it my goal to get Mollies to survive in Nelson water. I am slowly achieving that aim.
  23. Hi All. I use small electrical cable ties.
  24. Hi All. Some useful information for budding breeders. If you want to breed some species; Redtail Black Shark......................Labeo bicolour Kuhli Loach..................................Acanthopthalmus semisinctus you have to do it artificially. It is done by hypophysation of the male and an injection of synthetic gonadotrophin given intramuscularly to both the male and female.. If you can achieve that then you are on the way to a sucessful spawning. If you cant get to that stage give up and breed something that will breed for you without artificial help.
  25. Hi all. I can now say thankyou to the members of both Marlborough and Tasman Aquarium clubs for their faith in me. I have been re-elected as Vice President of Marlborough and President of Tasman Aquarium Clubs. I can now "cheekily" advise those that are looking forward to seeing me at conference, that I was a little premature in my earlier response to jim r as I didnt think of the Club's AGM's and that I may not be an office bearer of either club. I can now confirm for the masses, that I am the President, and Vice President of both the hosting clubs.
