  1. Hi All. Thanks for all the PM's about the Dwarf Cichlids and everybodies input about wanting to be on a list of buyers. I thought that I had made it quite clear at the beginning of the thread that I was "NO LONGER INTERESTED IN IMPORTING", but was prepared to give my suppliers list to anybody that was going to import "DWARF'S", as this would give them another supplier option and maybe different species. I would be interested, as I said, spending some serious money on DWARF'S if anybody does get an up to date shipment on the way to NZ hobbyists. BUT; I WILL NOT BE IMPORTING ANY MYSELF.
  2. Hi All And shown below is my "Brine Shrimp Hatchery". Each one is capable, and does hatch 15 gram per day. That's my ten cents worth. The hatcheries can be seen in the Fish Room Pics.
  3. Hi All Like anything; you pay your money, you take your chances. In saying that if you look at some of my piccies of the fish room you will see I use quite a few of them. They are cheap, easy to clean and setup and change over. If one breaks down I just replace it: what do you expect for $15.00? I do run Via Aqua 750 Pro's as well. Good luck, use them.
  4. Hi All I would suggest a few Jordanella floridae"The American Flag Fish". I have some and find they consume a lot more algae than anything else. Also they are very different fish.
  5. Hi All the October meeting of the club is to be held on 17th October at 7:30pm in the STOKE MEMORIAL HALL. The topic of the evening is to be "COMPATABILITY OF FISH in a COMMUNITY SITUATION" All visiting members are most welcome to attend. Errol Gear President
  6. Hi All Cockatoos like any other Cichlid will eat the eggs or "wrigglers" of their spawn if they are stressed or uncertain of there surroundings and, or their neighbours. To successfully breed these fish they should be in a "MINIMUM SIZED TANK OF 24 x 12 x 12" with low lighting and plenty of hiding places, and caves. This is a wee cave that I built to breed my "Dwarfs". Good luck.
  7. Hi All. Starfish, you will notice in a couple of my Fish Room pics there are a lot of "HANG ON" Filters. They are cheap and quick to clean and setup. I also have a "VIA AQUA 750 PROFESSIONAL" canister filter which I move around for "BULK" quick cleaning if it's needed. That is also obvious in one of the pics. I do not encourage "SUMPS" or other "BULK FILTRATION" methods as has been stated earlier, "IF ONE TANK GETS A PROBLEM, THE WHOLE LOT DO" that is especially true with diseases becuase before you notice the ailment , all the tanks have got it. It's like shutting the stable door, once the horse has bolted. Keep well away.
  8. Hi All Well; you actually get used to the layout and in as little as a week, "I", you don't even worry about it. The water changes are also quite simple as I have a pump for pumping water to the upper tanks, and they are very easy to syphon water out of, as water does run downhill. Water changes in the lowest tanks are just easy easy to syphon out of and refill. The tanks on both sides of the room regardless of size have a 55 watt heater in them which is more than enough to heat the tanks; (as the heat rises through the other tanks) and also to heat the whole room which is so well insulated that my main problem is not heating the room, but keeping it at about 22 degrees. If I didn't have heat transfer pumps in the room the temperature would rise to about 36 degrees, which happened when I first built the room. Don't forget either that the flourescent light ballasts heat up and also add to the temperature of the room and tanks. The heaters are only on at 10% of the time which keeps my power bill to no more than $160.00 per month for fifty tanks, even in the middle of winter.
  9. Hi All. To answer the question as put originally; The Blue tank rack was made by me out of EFS Steel to hold four 24 x 12 x 12 tanks for breeding angel's. The stand on the righthand side came from SPOTLIGHT when the store was being built. I had to do a lot of modification to make it so it holds fifteen various sized tanks. The end wall rack is from Mitre 10 Mega and holds three 18 x 9 x 9 tanks for artificial hatching of Cichlid eggs. The rack holding five tanks is also from Mitre 10 Mega and is for COOL water species. Leopard Fish (Caudo's) x two top tanks. Aphyosemion australe A. nigerianum A. nigerianum (albino)
  10. Hi All It really depends on what you want "TO GET OUT" of your Fish Room. I'm quite happy with 50 tanks in my Room and am also very successful at producing large numbers of fish. I"ve included a couple of views of my room to give you an idea of how "I" do it. 11. Hi All "AMAZON AQUARIUMS" will donate A COUPLE of "ALBINO ANGELFISH" and a few "FLAG CICHLIDS" to the cause. Well done. Keep up the good work Marlborough Club.
  12. Hi All, Are they in a heated tank or straight out room temp, Cold Water? If they are tropical, I'll take a few if they come up to size for sale.
  13. Hi All The short answer to your question is a great big "NO". Genetics won't allow it to happen, and believe me anything written on "ANGELFISH GENETICS" will make very daunting reading to a newcomer. Supose you "KNEW" what the parents of all these fish are; colourwise; and suppose you could trace their pedigree back a couple of generations then and maybe only then will you have a chance inside 1000 spawnings of getting a single pure black fish. Every offspring of any cross of the MARBLE ANGELS you have mentioned will certainly have a split gene carrying the black you want. But it is only a split gene and as such BLACK Angels are prone to melanoma, what we call cancer; which causes their fins to rot away or even body sections. You will have a hard job rearing them as they are like "ALBINO'S" another fish with split and very weak recessive genes. In spite of the above, get going and try as you have nothing to loose but will gain a lot of knowledge on breeding Angels and not to mention genetics. Good luck, and don't give up.
  14. Hi All The September meeting of "Tasman Aquarium Club" will be held on 19th September............ 7:30pm......... Stoke Memorial Hall........ Main Road .......... STOKE We will have a discussion on "Water" and "Water Testing". Bring along a small 100ml jar full and have you tank water expertly tested. We will also have ther Federation President with us for this meeting so it should be very interesting. All visiting Club members are also welcome to attend. Errol Gear President
  15. Hi All, You're right that the "BLACK'S" are the best to breed if you want to make money. IMO if you can produce good Black Lace Veiltails then you are really into the dosh. I've been trying for years to get good breeding stock, but it's almost like hens teeth. I do have blacks and black Lace Veiltails but they take almost as much work in rearing them as my Albino Angels. Good luck.
  16. Hi All I am posting this information for those along with "SUPERSI" that want to try growing and propagating the "CRYTOCORYNE" species. Getting "crypts" to grow emersed is a VERY TIME CONSUMING job, but the flower of the species is very beautiful and worthwhile to see. You know about putting a crypt into a tank, and having it turn to mush within a day or two; well getting them to grow out of the water is just as hard. You have to drop the water within a couple of days. The next concern is having HIGH humidity in the tank, hence you need a good fitting lid. The mist sprayer is easier to make now as you can buy garden mist heads and adapt the hose and fittings to do the job your require. I had my unit on a timer which misted the area every 4 hours during the day and every 6 hours at night. Dont forget that any water you add through the misting process has to be removed immediately as well, so a water level sensor is a must, as is a small pump to remove it. A small "BILGE PUMP" works a treat with a float switch. Good luck.
  17. Hi all. I suggest that you set up an automatic misting system if you are going to try and flower these plants.. Believe me, I did this in 1969 so it's nothing new to me. Back then I imported a lot of the "Crypto" species but I imagine that there would be none of them around now, and also a lot of the species have been re classified as well. Several examples of my imports that I propagated from flower by pollinating and gathering the seeds were; Crytocoryne johorensis. C. purpurea. C. nevilli. C. veersteegii C. lingua. I also suggest that the tank you use be at least 65 cm deep as some of these species grow quite large when emersed. Good luck.
  18. Would you like to visit "AMAZONIAN" on the crawl. I'll get extra biscuits. By the way Loopy have you bred from the Black Angel I gave you?
  19. Hi All Be wary of things like "Cornice Bond" , "TradeSet 20, 45 , 90 "etc. They maynot be straight Plaster of Paris, but have additives to make mixture cure faster, this might harm fish. These products contain Mould inhibitors and are lethal to fish.
  20. Hi All, I am using the older "VIA AQUA" 750 Pro, which was copied to make the Aqua One. The perfect filter if you want to do cheap. I run three of them; two on freshwater tropical tanks and one on my tropical marine.
  21. Hi All, It was great to meet you Neon, I'm sorry to hear about your loss, they sounded like they were doing ok when I saw you. Hopefully they'll do it again for you in a couple of weeks. Good luck..
  22. Hi All I am finding them extremely peaceful and see no reason why they shouldn't get on with anything. The male when he was removed was put in with Emperor, Flame Tetras and Glowlight Danios. He doesn't worry about them at all.
  23. Hi All Latest update as at 18th July. The male was removed three days ago due to a bit of "argy bargy" with the "missus", but she doesn't appear to be missing him. She is doing a great job, although a good eye is being kept on the family. The photo is not the best but you can see the progress within the tank. The "spots" around the fry and Flower Pot are Brine Shrimp, which also accounts for the "PINK BELLIES" of the fry..
  24. Hi All. Since New Zealand stops just south of "Woks" residence, I will tell all of you that don't know, where Buller is. Buller is an area of the west coast of the "Mainland" which incorporates Reefton, Westport, Inungahua, Berlins and Lyell. It is renowned for the quality "WHITEBAIT" which come from the region.
  25. Hi All. It is a sad thing that I have only just read this post. I have personally known Eddie for about thirty years from when he lived in Granity, and worked for the "Railways". He had Goldfish back then and had his ponds in the garden and front lawn, even a few "Goldies" inside in the bath. He was also picked upa nd taken home every month by me to attend the meetings of the "BULLER AQUARIUM CLUB" in Westport. Since I am so close to him, it is a very sad affair indeed to read that this has happened to him. I hope that he is being cared for well and visited by all those who are able to. I will definitely be calling in on my next trip to christchurch. As an aside:........ It may also astound you to know that the "BULLER AQUARIUM CLUB" is another "CLUB" that I was instrumental in starting. Over the years it has disappeared but I defy anybody to get it going again as there is certainly the numbers in Westport that keep fish.
