  1. Hi All. Good eh?
  2. Hi All, Thanks. I have been hatching BBS for years and every so often I stop and look at how I did it before, and what I could do to improve what I have. These units have been in use now for about five years and believe me they are really efficient. I hatch a minimum of 10grams a day in each unit, but they are capable of hatching 15grams a day and I have three days worth with the three containers. Day one and the 1st container is used, second day the second container and day three the last one. As the BBS hatches in 24 hours I have progressive sizes over the three days as they grow that little weeee bit more. I can harvest two size grades on day one and three size grades on the second and third day. And "Le piece de resistance" is that the whole thing just pulls apart to clean thoroughly, and can be put back together in under 1 and half minutes ready to refill.
  3. Hi All IMO they are a very poor speciman of anything: "Scalare or Altum". They have the hallmarks of having been crossed with a "scalare", but have the fin structure and "head and mouth look" of "altum's". I certainly don't like the lack of markings which is a good sign that they have been crossed. If I was selling them they would be advertised as a "Scalare Cross". These are my original IMPORTED "Altums". Good luck.
  4. Hi All. Freakyfish, my reference to the Via Aqua product was the "ORIGINAL ITALIAN MADE UNIT", not the Chinese COPIED VERSION of the Via Aqua / Aqua One. Maybe you dont remember the original units as I do, with 49+ years in the hobby
  5. Hi All That is because when the "KONG" Brothers started in business in their Australian garage they got the Chinese to copy the VIA AQUA because it was the worlds leading cannister filter. And it was originally designed and produced in Italy. They even chose the "AQUA ONE" NAME from the Via Aqua as it was a highly respected brand name. The Via Aqua is twice the unit that an Aqua One is, hence a Aqua One needs to be rated at 1200 to be equal to a 750 Via Aqua.
  6. Hi All Buy a "VIA AQUA 750 PRO" and you wont look back. I use two VA 650's and one VA 750 and I havent had a spot of bother with any of them, and they are about five and six years old. I won't fix wont isn't broken.
  7. Hi All. As one who is competent, qualified and registered to undertake and carry out this type of MIND BLOWING - DANGEROUS TASK. I am coming down on 15th November and could help or make it for you when I get down there. Send me a PM if you think you may need help.
  8. Hi All In my "QUALIFIED" opinion you must earth all of the fitting if there is any metal used in the light. The starter you will need for a tube up to 24 watts is an "S2" , and for anything above that you will need an "S10"; plus you need one per tube. The wiring "WILL" be a minimum of 1mm single stranded conduit wire, but I recommend you use 1.5mm. EARTH WIRES ARE TO BE GREEN OR GREEN/YELLOW ONLY. Good luck and keep the gumboots and rubber gloves on.
  9. Hi All. My supplier of Brine Shrimp Cysts tells me that anything two years old is not that startling and from three to six years it is very good, with five year old cysts being excellent. That is so long as they have been kept free of moisture and dampness.
  10. Hi All IF YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL and learn about fighters, go back and read my posts. I only breed fighters once a year because I find it damned near impossible to sell all of a spawning that I rear. Those who know me will tell you I rear about 150 to 200 per spawning, about 85% survival rate.
  11. Hi All They do well at around 20 degrees. They dont like anything above 26 degrees as I found out a long time back.
  12. Hi All Congrats on getting the "BACOPA" to flower. The next part is to get it to fertilize and save the seeds. QUOTE: The way I do it is to get a piece of EVA FOAM RUBBER about 10cm square and cut a slot in it to halfway, about 5 mm wide. Slide the flower stem through the slot so as the flower bud sits on the EVA FOAM and is above the water. The flower, bud, or seed pod must not dry out. After the fruit has ripened it will burst all over the EVA depositing about 100 seeds (in my experience) which must stay moist until they can be planted in very fine gravel with some "SEED RAISING MIX" added to it. It is then only a matter of time before you will see thr shoots of a new plant. Good luck.

    New Tank

Hi to All, WELL DONE that lady. A magnificent effort and a beautiful result.
  14. Hi All. I just caught up on this thread and thought you may be interested to see how I did a light hood for my 3 foot marine tank. It was made with MDF and spray painted white with a spray can. All the electrics for the lights are visible at the bottom edge of the cover and are outside in "FREE AIR" to keep the heat down. If anyone is interested I can do an article on the manufacture of "My" type of Light Hood.
  15. Hi All. Well dixon1990 it seems you have tried everything to get it going:... Sucking, Blowing and Listening.. Consider this: turn off the taps and take the head off the unit. You said you could hear the impeller. I think the shaft may possibly be broken and the impeller is only vibrating and not turning. That happened to me several years ago, and I tried everything in the book as well. Good luck

    help please

Hi All. sorry to hear of the loss. In my vast experience with "Angel's" (NOT THE HALO'ED ONES) I have found on occasions they will be Ok one minute and dead the next. They are a very funny fish at times in as much as they sometimes wont eat and just go into a corner and that's it; they stay there until they die. I have also known them to be swimming around a tank happy as when all of a sudden they lay on their side. you can coax them to move but after you turn around they are back on their side and stay like that until they die. In my experience it is a very rare occurence when that sort of thing happens but it is a bit disconcerting. Dont give up on Angel's they are beautiful fish.
  17. Hi All. I think the answer to that IRA is that goldfish are decorative and have been since about the early fifteen hundreds. That's probably why so many people (not Me) enjoy keeping them.
  18. Hi All Has the guts of this original post been lost somewhere among the replies and responses? It appears to me that the question was something like "Which / what are useful fish". I can be called a D...k H...d but I want to go back and ask a stupid question. "USEFUL IN RESPECT TO WHAT OR FOR WHAT". All fish in some way or another are useful for something in varying degrees. Lets get back on track here as I think we have drifted off the main line of thought.

    Dwarf Cichlids

Hi All As you can see CAM my "rockwork" was set in the middle of the tank and there was nothing behind or in front; Just the three rocks you can see.

    Dwarf Cichlids

Hi All. This is a simple cave / swimthrough that I used for my Pandurinis. This is what I used for my cockatoo's. Simple but it worked as the eggs show. The eggs were artificially hatched as you can observe. Dont make too much of a fuss; it doesn't happen in nature. Just keep them well fed and secure in their surroundings and the rest will follow.

    Dwarf Cichlids

Hi All Cam, I think your tank is a bit small at 50 cm. The tank in the pictures of mine is 75 cm X 20 x 20, and as I said it was a community situation and you can clearly see the glass divider I put in with a fighter on the "Other" side. When divided it was still 55 cm long and mum did a great job of rearing as you can see. I didn't condition them at all specifically; in fact they got a few "Mozzie Wrigglers" for a couple of days then went on to our Freeze dried Bloodworms along with broken up KRILL. Well fed and clean water:......that appears to do it for me.

    Dwarf Cichlids

Hi All The Latin / Scientific name for these little beauties is: Laetacara curviceps. It was latterly Aequidens curviceps or Acara curviceps. www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_curviceps.php It has also had the common name of "Sheepshead Acara". It is also very closely related to Aequidens dorsiger, commonly know as the "Stupid Cichlid" because you can pick them up in your hand. I did import some of those way back in 1976 but I doubt anybody has any left now. Good luck

    Dwarf Cichlids

Hi All it's not getting "Dwarf Flags" to breed, it's stopping them. How many hundred do you want? I can supply at least 250 at 2.5 to 3.5 cms. Mine bred in a community situation in a 35 litre tank and both parents raised the fry. I took dad out and a couple of weeks later I took Mum out; and as a pair of angels spawned I needed the spare tank (I only have 50) so what did I do; yep, I put the parent Flags into the same tank, and yep, two days later there's another couple of hundred or so eggs. Eggs are visible on the rock. Good luck.
  24. HI All Thanks for the comments. 8) You will have to come along to a meeting, I think March; about "FOODS and FEEDING". We will have a workshop and all the members who haven't already got one of the hatcheries can build one of their own. "SECRET"................. THERE IS NO GLUE ANYWHERE EXCEPT AROUND THE TOP OF THE CONE. THE AIR CIRCULATES THE WATER EXTREMELY VIGOROUSLY INSIDE THE CONE.
  25. Hi All A Good story. If you ask any of the TASMAN CLUB about Names, they will all tell you "ERROL IS ALWAYS GOING ON ABOUT LEARNING AND USING THE LATIN/SCIENTIFIC NAMES". I seem to have had my push for correctness exonorated as this is a good case in point.
