  1. Hi Geetee the Ph is 7.0 at the moment. I had to take a reading to be sure, but it is around that mark.
  2. Thanks for the compliment. Yes they are in (I suppose) fishy paradise but thats all they are getting. The tank is on 600x300x300mm and at 27 degrees C all the time. I find that the "flower Pot" as it is is quite accepable to them even though there are rocks at the side of the pot behind the JAVA FERN. I have left this tank set up specifically for them and for visitors to see as it is an experience to the "uninitiated" to see the breeding process working "IN NATURE". Dont give up though, if you would like a pair of NON AGGRESSIVE KRIBS let me know.
  3. I have two pair that spawn for me every 9 days and have for the last 4 months (HOW MANY DO YOU WANT) and the parents suprisingly enough BOTH defend the fry to the end. Check out the photo of the Family at http://groups.msn.com/AMAZONAQUARIUMS/a ... htalk.msnw It could also be that you have a pair that are carrying an aggressive trait as I have only previously observed the female chasing off the male, with him hiding until he's taken from the tank.
  4. Hi all It would be great to go getta pick n' mix selection on the weekend, instead of the usual Daphnia trip. It was just a reflection of my 46 years in the hobby and I wouldnt like to see some unscrupulous person/s start the same tricks again. It is hard enough now to get fish due to MAF (dont forget ERMA) policies and another spate of releases into ("TROPICAL") waters supportive of tropicals would certainly add more fish to the prohibited lists. Enjoy the hobby as it is.
  5. Livebearer breeder asks a pertinent question, but as I well recall, it was the LIVEBEARER BREEDERS that released swordtails and Platys into the tributories of Lake Taupo. I hope as a Killie keeper we dont see a repeat of the "livebearer" antics of times gone by.
  6. Have any members of NZKA ever comtemplated putting out a list of who keeps and breeds which species of Killies and made it available? That would make it easy for us newbies to access the species we desire.
  7. You can count me in, from Nelson the "TOP OF THE SOUTH." Its about time that there were seperate cells for "ALL FNZAS" options of the hobby. It makes contact that much easier and it enhances the need to have the FNZAS AGM in a central location each year.
  8. It pains me to see the NZKA, or any other club, go to the wall for the want of a person dedicated to make the decision that he did, and the whingers only have themselves to blame if that club closes. Things are done in clubs by it's members specifically for the general good of that club and it's members. I see Alans actions as no different. In any venture time is a major pressing factor, as is cost both to the person and the club as a whole. Since Resigning as FNZAS Secretary in 1975 I have seen numerous clubs either shut down or loose members to the point of existence only in name. (Look at the membership numbers of the clubs in Auckland alone). Alan dont give it up; take heart in the fact that you had everyones interests at heart, and that the "Aquatic Hobby" Followers in NZ need you. For you to resign now is tantamount to admitting defeat by some faceless, and probably nameless incompetent moron. Stand tall ALAN, withdraw your resignation, the mainstrean hobbyists are all behind you. Good Luck.
  9. The ideas that are being offered are all good and obviously work for those that use them. My method works for me because I put the "SEALING STRIP" on the lid after cleaning it with Methylated Spirit and as the tanks were serviced daily I wanted something that would stay the distance, and it did for me. But, whatever you do end up using make sure that ALL KILLIE TANKS are virtually "WATERTIGHT". Good luck with a great species of fish.

    KILLIE TANKS

It is sad that one looses their first spawning of a species they have just got, but TIGHT Tank covers with Killie's are a must. In my earlier years with killies I used to stick "FOAM DRAUGHT STRIP" aroud the edges of the tank lids. This was extremely successful as the foam sealed all the imperfections and chips in the glass whike still retaining the temperature and Stopping ther Fish from escaping. Just a little trick I used that you may care to try.
  11. This response is a bit late I'm sorry, but I dont visit this site often. Alas Hori is no longer with us. I was a personal friend of Hori Parker for many years. And have even stayed at his house on more than one occassion. He was a very successful breeder, but did not import fish, that was my department. I met Hori when I was a member of Wellington Aquarium and Water Garden Society, (and for those who remember him, Bill Sievewright took me to my first meeting) and I am still involved in Tropical fish 46years later but now reside in Nelson. Hori lived down the road from me in Naenae and he had a great fish room, as did I in Rimu Street. He worked for General motors in Petone in the refrigeration Division and with my electronic experience and his refrigeration knowledge we both had HEAT PUMPS to run our fish rooms. If anybody wants to know anything about Hori they can email me and I will be happy to let them know what they require.
  12. As I recall the water temperature was sufficient to maintain them.. I believe the rivers around there are about 19 to 23 degrees. I didnt go "fishing" there but I know people who did.
  13. As I recall from a while back there was heaps of the stuff and a couple of the Aponogeton species in the Waiwhetu Stream around Naenae and Taita. Check it out. The KOI CARP deal has been going on for years. The best source for them is Turangi rivers. Those rivers also used to have a good supply of swordtails as well.
  14. Would any of the FNZAS Members or visitors who use this site and or, who reside in Nelson be prepared to help to restart an "Aquarium Club" in Nelson??? We once had a thriving club here and there is no reason why it should not be like that again, with the numbers of people keeping Aquariums. It used to be:....Films / Slideshows..Club Visits..Buy and Sell Tables for Fish & Plants..Raffles..Social Events..Fish Shows..and a GOOD Library. I would like to see a club like this again; so come on fellow enthusiasts lets do it. If you are interested please contact the writer.
  15. Hi all Canterbury Aquarium Society like a lot of others in the country have lost their way. I was involved with Canterbury as far back as 1976 I think when they held a "Fish Show". I was a Nelson member. (I even cleaned up the Open Section prizes) and made a lot of good friends on the way; one of whom is the Patron of Canterbury. But since then all clubs are missing out on members to the point of going into recess or vanishing completely. So dont bemoan the "Norwesters" get a membership drive going and value what you have.
  16. Hi As a newbie and wrinkly from Nelson I see all the banter from Blenheim. Dont bother about there....Nelson's the place to be. We are always interested in new folks here; and as a "Fish Enthusiast" you're doubly welcome, as the club went into recess as interest was lost, so we need more people with push to get it together again. I was a member years ago and was also on the committee.
