  1. Hi All Well I'm going to say different. I have a PAIR of Golden Angels and the male is a big beastie, ( the size of a saucer and 1.5cm through) and anyone who has seem them will atest to their size. I have them in a tank with Guppies that are only 1 cm long, juvenile Checker Barbs and swordtails (Various) and all sizes. These angel's make NO ATTEMPT to even chase the baby fish. I believe it is down to "Good Breeding and Rearing". All my fish at a very early stage in their lives are mixed in with other fish and reared with them, and that's what I think makes for good community fish when you take them home and put them into a tank full of Cardinals. But hey, I'm an old fool according to some but "IF IT WORKS, DO IT" and I do get the results. Good Luck with your endevours.
  2. Good luck Zev. We can do with a few more hobbyists taking on plant propagation over fish. I am trying very hard to produce good Cryptocorynes and Barclaya, but unfortunately the South Island does not have a "Good Plants" range so we all take what we can get.
  3. Hi All Thanks for the offer. At my age and time of life I need "ALL" the help I can get. I would love to take it off your hands and distribute it to our members Zev.
  4. So what was the question? I've forgotten
  5. Hi All Yes, how stupid of me not to mention the big ball in the sky. But the sun doesn't put out the same uv wavelength in total like the UV sterilizers do. I would expect a shop to tell you that you need a UV unit. They rely on sales of products to stay in business. But, I do stand by my statement about Ponds, lakes etc.: they dont have constant UV 24/7 like some hobbyists are advised.
  6. Hi All Not a silly idea either Alanmin4304. For all those that use the forum asking for the best food to feed anabantid fry, here is the perfect answer. Someone with "TOO MUCH" green water, that they could sell. If I couldn't produce my own; believe me I would be a customer.
  7. Hi All Proof Reading is a bit like "Hind Sight". You always see things differently after the event. Dont worry Caryl, you aren't expected to be able to walk on water. Keep up the good work.

  9. Hi All I dont want this to sound too negative, but: another hobbyist has secumbed to the LFS and all the speil about how good this is and what a beautiful job this will do, and bought a UV Sterilizer. I ain't in ALL MY LIFE or any of the MANY COUNTRIES in the world where I have been seen a pond, lake, stream, or river hooked up with a UV Sterilizer. Pristine and pretty just don't happen in Nature, so please all you hobbyists out there lets get back to doing things the older, AND CHEAPER ways; because believe me they do work. Look for the cause of the problem and work on ways to correct it and enjoy doing it because it's part of the hobby. Don't just go out and throw a few more dollars at it because a "MODERN Machine" can solve the problem for you. Enjoy your hobby and learn from your experiences with nature.
  10. Hi All I make "Brine Shrimp" available in the tank for the fry on the day before they become "FREE SWIMMING", which is normally 4 days after they hatch. The secret is to feed them 5 - 6 times a day.
  11. Hi All Why pay an enormous amount for a UV Unit when in fact you dont need one. Fact is, you have the best water you could keep your fish in. The only problem for people is that it doesn't look nice. I have a 24 x 12 x 12 tank that is so green you can only see into it about 3 inches and it contains baby ( 2.5cm) A. Mcmasteri, A. pandurini, Angel fish and pearl gouramis. ALL DOING WELL All I do is change a 10 litre bucketful of the water each day and every fish in the tank is doing fantastic.
  12. Hi All Seems like I've done it all wrong for the last 48 years. Maybe I should have read the book and got the certificate. 48 years as a hobbyist and a "VERY SUCCESSFUL" BREEDER as well with a fount of knowledge about the hobby which I store in my "Tiny Brain" and try to recall from time to time so as I can pass it on to somebody else for their knowledge and enjoyment of the hobby, and now it's all in a book and you get a piece of paper if you tick the right box Good gosh; just how wrong have I been all my life. Next in the chain will be a "Diploma of Fish Feeding". Chapter one: Go to your LFS. Decisions, decisions.
  13. Hi All I'm with you on this Ira, but: The only problem with the "PLY" is the cost, which when you get to the thicker sizes the price far exceeds "MDF" and coatings of Polyurethane. The polyurethane coating seals it like "FIBREGLASS" and also gives it a lot more strength by "BONDING" the fibres that make up the sheet together a lot better.
  14. Hi All Paul_r; Re the MDF you are using for the cabinet. I strongly suggest that you give it about 5 or 6 coats of "POLYURETHANE", with the first 2 coats thinned to the consistency of water so as it soaks into the wood. As MDF is just like "Weetbix"; it attracts water extremely quickly and just collapses. Good Luck
  15. Hi All cant see any "Rhom Barbs" in there, but the tanks looking good Caryl.
  16. Hi All Not too much of the "GENUINE" E.tennellus around either. Try some "Grasses"; Eleocharis, comes to mind and Cryptocoryne nevilli. Good Luck
  17. Hi All I would recommend an electromagnetic pump. They deliver a huge volume of air and "IN MY EXPERIENCE" they are very quiet. Check out some of "Tankgirls" auctions on TRADE ME. A good thermostat is a "HONEYWELL" room thermostat, 5 cm square and easy to install. Available from Mastertrade, Cory's, or any electrical wholesaler.
  18. Hi All I would like to suggest that you wire a 230 volt computer fan of series with one of the light bulbs. The effect will be that when the lights are on and heat is being generated in the cupboard it will be blown around the cabinet to distribute it a lot better which will in effect keep the temperature within the cabinet even and constant. Good Luck.
  19. Hi All "shell", clarify for a simple person who has only been a hobbyist for 48 years now and whose only qualification is a B. Sc... What is "SO SPECIAL" about the Zebra Danio, appart from the pretty stripes which is not apparent, available, or even contained in any other species of Brachydanio/ Danio. To state that they are next in line to mice etc. is, I think a bit of Literary license.
  20. Hi All As we will be 1 year old on 27th July 2007 we may even have a birthday cake. Matt_Man I think the late Dave likes a bit of sweet cake. All members and visitors to Nelson of affiliated clubs are welcome. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  21. Hi Faran Try LAMP SPECIALISTS in Christchurch. They supply me with a lot of otherwise impossible to get lamps. You will find their prices very competitive as well. Good Luck
  22. Hi All. The STATEMENT I MADE WAS: The species Danio / Brachydanio rerio is "NOT A PROHIBITED SPECIE", as has been alluded to by a few. The fact that some of this specie has been "GENETICALLY ENGINEERED" that is a whole new situation. The GE/GM variety of the specie has however, been in NZ for a number of years for scientific research. But I bet that if this hadn't blown up then NO ONE in NZ would have known of any other GE/GM fish in NZ.
  23. Hi All. This topic has created some discussion, but, from one who knows, and a lot who think they know. Even I had posts "Quarantined" because of the "TOUCHY" nature of the subject. BUT, AT THE END OF THE DAY, AND NO BUREAUCRATS INVOLVED,THE DANIO SAGA IS LIKE THIS. "QUOTE:" A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME IS STILL A ROSE." Genetically modified or not. The same applies to the Danio rerio, there is NO DIFFERENCE. So to all who would disagree; Sorry, the fish are LEGAL IMPORTS under the name Danio/Brachydanio rerio, unless of course they are now "PISCES NON GRATA" in light of what has happened. For the plebes of the forum, in short: Fishes not wanted. The original fish "MY FRIENDS" purchased could have come from any of the facilities that have them for whatever reason; But I make no assumptions or statements about that.
  24. Hi All Seems like a bit of egg on MAF'S face eh Matt_Man? Someone years ago said to me "Lairs", "Damned Liars", and "Politicians". I think we should add bureaucrats to the statement.
  25. Hi All. Check out this link, even out of curiousity and in the TOP BOX, "Organism" type in Danio rerio. Scroll down and click on "Search". The results astounded me when I read what was there. THESE FISH AIN'T NEW BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION http://www.ermanz.govt.nz/search/registers.html You will note that incorporated in the numbers there are two letters; "GM", and if that don't mean "GENETICALLY MODIFIED", I'd be wanting more information from some bureaucrat..
