  1. hrmm... aren;t newts a type of salamander???? im confused now.... its probably one of those laws that needs to be changed but no one can be bothered hiring a lawyer to fix it
  2. yeah, dwarf puffers are best in a mini system anyway or you tend to not see them. enjoy and have fun any ideas on what sort of tank you want to start with, we may be able to help with fish compatibility
  3. depends where the phosphates are coming from, an extreme reading can be caused by outside contamination, especially from detergents, also if the algae blooms then dies off it can poison the tank as well also it take a heck of a lot of phosphates but it can affect the digestive system of the fish.
  4. hrmmm, listed as a pest fish but without classification.... interesting Department of conservation is responsible for populations already in the country, mainly it is a do not release back into the water alive. pity they are so strict on it, Koi Carp are a freakin awesome fish bait, if they let people harvest them for that they would start dissapearing quickly, but atm they prosecute anyone that tries
  5. I have them in many tanks that are defintely not over fed, they are out and about 24/7 and I have had tanks crash before when too many were there (one hit nitrate levels of over 40 in 3 days with no fish in it) they are not normally an issue, but every now and again they just go mental. normally more of an issue in smaller tanks though
  6. have noticed a larger proportion of females in last few shipments (actually only had 2 males out of 10 fish)
  7. man this thread is making me miss my snakes awesome critters until you put one under the heater in the foot well of your car
  8. best way to get a boy in the mood, gaffa tape his missus' mouth shut... damn im in trouble now
  9. yeah I thought that too with unwanted organisms, then I found DOC promoting catching and eating Catfish....
  10. nah not 100% sure, the legalese reads im pretty sure gambusia would be illegal due to the fact its impossible to stop them breeding
  11. only got 5 mosquit rasbora and 5 scarlet badis in a 45L display tank, the boss thought it was empty
  12. dropped a mosquito rasbora today took me ages to find it mucking around quite happily in a drop of water about the size of a 50cm piece on the floor, back in tank, happy as larry
  13. no more snails... thats one very healthy looking gourami
  14. its not technically illegal as they are not being taken to be kept alive....
  15. nah, sorry but won't sell unless they are going to be properly taken care of, as said they will be munched pretty quickly. they are nowhere near as fast as minnows. worthy of a tank for them selves though. if you want to see the results go catch some gambusia from one of the lakes around here and see how they go
  16. female leopards munch a bit back, oto's deal with most of the rest, but still a bit around and about 4mm tall in the hidden corners, going to my oldies and grabbing some fenbendazole (cattle drench) bye bye hydra
  17. would do fine as long as you have the ability to remove female if war begins they are normally good, but if she isn't ready he can be a bit pushy, normally ok if there are a few dither fish around though. I've always bred them in tanks around 30cm x 45cm x 30cm
  18. lol my size 10 missus has clothes ranging from size 6 to size 14 size measurments are screwy guys do it better... small medium large and time to loose weight
  19. probably way too small for goldfish.... I'm breeding them atm, the girls are getting REALLY fat but only 3 surviving fry so far I think the hydra may be snaring a few... saw one disappear down one the other day, plus saw mummy eat one... then again got Lotsa floating plants so may be a few more in there. i'll let you know when they are big enough for sale (if they are girls they are MINE though)
  20. nice, definately a male female group this time (I hesitate to say pair til they have done the deed) still think there may be a bit of longfin in the male though...
  21. too much of anything will cause harm
  22. only lost Aqua one ones, got a 30-40 year old Reliant heater, made in NZ sitting in my breeding tank atm, stil perfect and only +/- 1 degree (looks brand new even though its been used most of the time) and also know of a old jager thats still going strong after 15 years in a commercial breeding tank
