  1. http://tlc-products.com/ in independant tests they came up with a 96% ammonia removal compared with 16% for cycle and 14% for stresszyme (figures are taken from memory so might be out a bit but the 96% is accurate)
  2. I\m not really a plant expert but this was what I thought when you mentioned a shorter lighting period, wouldn't it be better to lower intensity for longer???
  3. have read that they have a limited lifespan of around 6 - 12 months, would be cool though they are mainly made for salt water tanks so may have been set for a higher range
  4. I bought cheap LEDs, last about 2 days before failing
  5. he prefers it if I design and build it and he tests it before putting it into use
  6. my experience includes every time get fish in, add 40 goldfish to a tank that has had one in it for about 2 weeks, add 50mL TLC product for problem ponds, no ammonia or nitrite issues at all, worst I ever got was after adding 50 neons to a 80L tank when the nitrite went up to 0.1ppm
  7. wouldn't inbreeding increase the chances of random mutations???, or just deformities
  8. easier??, I thought a bag of $1 tadpoles providing cheap live food would be pretty easy
  9. if it is a brown mystery snail, kiss goodbye to your plants more likely it is a small ramshorn, which are normally harmless until they get out of control, but great food for puffers and loaches
  10. Agree, if you have access to a mature system of some form it is a lot better, but the use of live bacteria solutions do work quite effectively if you do not have access to one
  11. or the butch one if you have lesbians
  12. I heard you can stimulate the morphing by feeding live tadpoles which have high concentrations of the hormones required, any truth in this???
  13. probably trademe even though, the tank is worth approx $100, the air pump etc.. worth approx $50, and the fish.... he got ripped off a bit
  14. I would lean more towards male on the first one and definately female, it does have a bit of a short fin for a boy though
  15. got suspended from school for putting a cat out of its misery with my boot heel once, had been run over by the school bus and its entire back end was crushed seriously it was screaming and the teacher was going to wrap it up and take it to the Vet which was about 45 mins away by car, Didn't like doing it, but it was the best thing. probably one of the major downsides to being the only farm boy in a townie school
  16. found this while researching a presentation http://rexgrigg.com/mlt.html good little article on lighting smaller tanks My dad is a electronics engineer and showed me the other day that the Electronics from an energy saver light bulb can be used as a Low heat ballast for regular fluro tubes if you connect the wires correctly to regular fittings, you can even locate the ballast away from the tank to reduce heating issues, but remember don't play round with that sort of thing unless you are 100% confident or even better qualified
  17. my never fail go to food is pumpkin softened slightly in the microwave, Used it to condition fish and snails for breeding(I used to cut them into boat shapes so when the hard skin floated to the surface and my bristlenose was motoring it around it was funny) plus if you have Apple Snails it makes their shells go a slight orangy colour, and it tends to colour up gold mollies as well
  18. also depends on age, it becomes quite obvious once they hit their teenage years (kinda like humans ) heres a sample for your regular opaline gourami Female Male if our dealing with Dwarf gourami its even easier, males = colourful Females = blander, and a harder to find, normally need to be specialy ordered

    Project AA

Dunno if it is, but I was told that 1 bubble = 1mL of CO2, so you could work out volume from that
  20. I have one that is noisy no matter what I do, waiting until missus gets annoyed enough to let me buy a bigger better one the one way valve inside seems to have gone slightly hard and is clattering a bit.
  21. had a heap of java fern "melt" the other day, was wrapped in wet newspaper for 2 days before I put it in the tank, about 4-5 days later it just went dark green and fell apart, think it might have been the transport period as the one piece I put in another tank is going well about 4 months on
  22. does well just about anywhere, let it grow above the water and you might get some very nice flowers
  23. not bad black angel though, can we shoot the person who sold it too them???
  24. just went for a warm white, it has a bit more red spectrum to show off the red in the shrimp (and the yellow dot on the tail, looks awesome!!) plus im only after a bit of algae growth so red spectrum should boost it well, it also has a good range of blue if the spots on the gobies are anything to go by. atm its just clipped onto the desk next to it to test it out but would prefer to have it on the tank.
  25. depends on the product, I use TLC products and have always been impressed, but have had trouble with stresszyme before
