  1. fish definitely have different moods. but do they have emotions... now that's a philosophical debate i've had with myself for years...
  2. done a 25% water change daily since posting this, also used "prime" now he's looking black as and sweet as ever. these fish really are quite sensitive to water conditions!!
  3. thanks caryl. water conditions haven't been so good as i've been away and trusted someone else to look after it - unfortunately they didn't do what they were supposed to. i've freshened the water over the last week but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. it looks like a fungus or something? i added slime coat aka prime. is it ok to treat scale-less fish in meth blue?
  4. he has developed white cloudy blotches all over. can i treat him in "wunder tonic" aka meth blue?
  5. bump! 8) does anyone have any experience with breeding garden snails in NZ? how did you do it? i want to set up a small garden snail breeding operation, as my new buddy here loves to crunch them up and eat the slimey bits...
  6. ...obviously.. the classic bic lighter seems to be a rather universal indication of size, better than coins which vary and unfortunately my daughter didn't want me using her school ruler. still, not particularly well thought out, since after taking the vid i realised the bottom of the bin had a grid pattern. i often don't think things through before doing them, i just start doing things and stay in the moment. usually get things done, just takes longer than usual. anyway. he bit me pinky finger pretty hard while i was taking photos. dude has a HUGE mouth man. for the record i have no idea if "he's" male or female.
  7. hands off henward! lol. i'm keeping this fish because it was given to me on the condition i didn't sell it. that and he's just plain awesome! every visitor i have is fascinated or rather disturbed by him lol :-)
  8. aside from mine, i've never seen one more than about 15cm! i think he's around 3 years old but could be more like 4. i've had him for about a year. he has grown a good 7cm in the year i've had him! he is looking and acting much better now he is in a tank by himself! eats heeeeaps! shrimp, ox heart and occasionally pellets but only if i starve him..
  9. and yes for those with a keen eye, my convict is sick, has developed some sort of scale rot or something. he's now in a tank with blue wonder tonic. wish him well.....
  10. for those who have asked, and the rest of you fishy folk, here are some size indicative pics of falcor, my BGK. i did maintenance on his tank today and he was in a tub for an hour or so. for comparison the tub is 52cm long by 35cm wide, each square on the base of the tub is 7cm by 7cm. he is approximately 45cm long and still growing! watch this space - i will add more pics of him in his tank very soon... video here
  11. are you keeping all of these in cold water?
  12. danios are alright. borneo suckers are also sweet in cold water. weird fish too
  13. i've kept golden and brown algae eaters in cold water and had them grow from 3-4cm to 12cm in under a year. you should really look into nz native fish. they need very cold water. in auckland it's extremely difficult to keep the water cold enough for them during summer.... but there is a big selection and all nz natives are beautiful and fascinating fish! not only that but they are free to take from the wild (most of them) as always, do some research if you do decide on nz natives. search stella's posts.
  14. add your location under profile section of the user control panel. if you're on the north shore or in auckland, come take my JD he's a hardy fish, good for beginners and establishing tanks. he will start your cycling off nicely.. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=56751
  15. i would say that africans are much more adaptable to PH levels than clown loaches are...
  16. new album coming out in the next few months :happy1:
  17. the artist is alex grey, and his art was used by the band TOOL on the cover and videos of their most recent album, 10,000 days. google "alex grey" for more awesome art.
  18. nah, he was born with minimal orange markings.
  19. i have at one stage kept 10 kribensis (male and female, non breeding) in a tank with clown loaches, guppies, bristlenoses, blue ram, fire eel, and i never saw any aggression coming from the kribs. aside from the baby guppies disappearing at a very 'population control' rate. and anyway i more suspected my fire eel to be eating the baby guppies! kribs are a great community fish! great fish all round - they are beautiful fish!
