  1. yeah i'd much rather a sump. and once i get a sump sorted for my big tank i can use my external filters on my smaller tanks. i also want the sump to use as a grow out tank. can anyone drill my tank for me?
  2. i have a three foot tank i want to turn into a sump but i am a wee bit nervous about drilling my tank for it because it's an old tank....
  3. yea same dimensions as yours, but i run external filters. this is it at the moment..
  4. yeah i noticed your albino red, they are stunning fish aye! i haven't seen any for sale recently though. your tank is looking mint btw, those barbs are huge! good ol' henward lol 8)
  5. thank you, so do i!
  6. as requested here are some photos of my oscars. it's hard to take good photos of fish! any tips? it would be great to see some pictures of other users oscars too so post 'em up guys! 8)
  7. this flag used to completely cover my old tanks stand. but my tank grew, and the flag stopped fitting. the big black piece of wood hiding the ugly metal stand is actually my poker table which just happened to be perfect size for the purpose. arrrrr!
  8. brilliant! i never played sport, but i did play the bagpipes in a bagpipe band 8)
  9. it doesn't matter what your stand looks like, as long as it is sturdy. aesthetics don't count for jack when there is 600 litres of water, glass and dead fish spewed through your house. i have had some super ugly stands, but they have all been sturdy as. and all i ever needed to do to distract from their ugliness was drape a "curtain" over the stand. like what you do if you have an ugly couch you don't want to part with. i buy flags from the local $2 shop, pirate flags to be precise, and use blue tack or tacks to hang them around my tank stand. makes it look super cool... arrrrrrrrr! 8)
  10. awesome! i will be down that way and will pop in to see it soon. i think kokopu are some of the most awesome fish ever. don't you love it how our native fish all look so... kiwi!!
  11. yesterday my male agassizi was acting as you described, i noticed him acting funny and losing his brilliant colour about 3 days ago, so yesterday i did a 33% water change and tested all levels, all ok. but sadly this morning he was dead, sunken to the bottom, standing upright on his nose. that was the first flush funeral i've had to perform in almost a year. sad. i guess the fact i hadn't named him yet, made it a little bit less devastating... for the record, i had begun using fertilizers for my plants around two weeks ago, with flourish. i use half recommended dose with each water change including the change for the sick agassizi, because i am under the impression it is completely harmless to fish. there are 30 or so other fish in the tank, including kribensis and my female agassizi (who is now for sale) and all are doing fine, so for now i will continue to use the fertilizer and blame the untimely demise of my unnamed yet treasured male agassizi on spontaneous apisto quietus. still, i do i really hope it had nothing to do with the fertilizers...... 8)
  12. good thread! regular glass cleaning is necessary for constant clarity but not always possible, my 6foot backs up to a wall, so rear glass not easily reachable unless you have 3 foot long arms. which I don't. so for those seemingly impossible stains, nothing beats a razor blade lubricated with white vinegar. tied to the end of a stick, if u need to. better living everybody. 8)
  13. just got myself a fire eel... yeaaa! i've wanted one for ages. its about 20ish cm long and for now it is in a 200l planted, with some dwarf cichlids, and plenty of guppy fry to munch on if he ever gets sick of bloodworms. ill let u know if I see him eating the crushed up hikari gold pellets or flakes I feed to the other fish. loving the eel already! cool fish! 8)
  14. nice! always wanted to know how big those guys can get and how quick they grow. how long is it now? (for the record) 8)
  15. hedgehogs are awesome! i've lived on the north shore auckland most my life, in the suburbs.. and i've always had hedgehogs living in the bush outside my house... they must be feeding off civilization.. their abundance shows their method of survival is well complimented by the mess that humans tend to make...! i've always fed them when i see them, they fascinate me! you only really catch them at night.. unless they're sick or lost/trapped. they love cat pellets, or a soggy piece of bread. you'd never know they were there unless you catch them out on their shuffles one night.. if you ever hear a rustling in the bushes by your letterbox, then chuck a handful of moggys dinner in there.. mister hedgehog will totally appreciate it!
  16. if i had the money, actually... WHEN i have the money.. i would like to have several large fish tanks around my (large) house, and a monster one outside, which are all connected by water filled clear tubing (perspex? pvc? acrylic?) coming out of the tanks, up and along the ceiling, and through to the other tanks. different sized tubes could be used to restrict large fish to tanks reserved for small fish. pipes could be drained to clean, and suction could be used to refill. thus you would have fish swimming over your head all through the house. i wonder if they would follow you around while you're doing the housekeeping. imagine when it came time to find a particular fish.. you would have to search all your tanks and a maze of tubes to find it.. hmm... maybe that's not so much my holy grail, but more of a MFS victims wet dream... (no pun intended) haha at the end of the day, all i want is a fish tank that is big enough and set up well enough to make all my fish (and future fish) feel completely at home.
  17. this morning i woke up to my flat mate sitting on the end of my bed watching my fish... so i've now decided that i'm just going to charge people to come and look at my fish. problem solved
  18. sorry F im having trouble getting the pics online as im having to use my not so smart phone. great fish, such a pig.. he's 18cm now!
  19. I've seen youtube vids of very white ones, not sure what they were tho.. closest I've seen in nz are albino tigers with little or no orange stripes. hollywood have one at the moment I was looking at because I have a tiger oscar with very little orange it looks choice, so an albino tiger would look good swimming next to it..
  20. i like to keep fish, but it costs me. which fish are the best to keep if you're looking to make a profit? and how profitable are they? just wondering cha-ching.
