  1. wow dude what an incredible looking tank. good job! 8)
  2. probably the most rangi enclosure setup on the forums but may as well post it. had my BTS for a few years now, used to be in a much smaller enclosure, but when my 6 foot fish tank cracked, i decided to convert it to a new much bigger home for slash. and he is very happy with it. he actually runs across the tank sometimes, something he never used to do in the small enclosure. and of course, slash himself...
  3. oh so that's why you got german rams... 8)
  4. this snail attack video gave me a huge fright! was not expecting that!!
  5. man i love bugs! the creepier and crawlier the better! i have a pet spider named cedric in a big jar, which is packed full of web now. i feed it flies and tiny bits of apple. dunno what kind of spider it is tho.. i also have a weta named gary living in my bedroom, nowhere near that size though. must be a standard tree weta? no idea what he eats, maybe he has a secret tunnel to outside and comes in here to shelter. my house is 130 years old so i wouldnt be surprised if there were gaps and holes for him to crawl through i HATE white tails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. Electric Blue Cichlid (Sciaenochromis fryeri) i see them quite often up here in LFS
  7. if i had to choose between heineken and ammonia spiked fish water i would take the fish water every time.
  8. old school EC! nice! will be a mean show too, lucky man.
  9. are they for sale bud? i would like to see some pics when you have time...
  10. noooo jack do you drop them in hot water? this is a terrible and cruel way to cull! get some clove oil or special fish euthanasia product!
  11. i'd say the over zeal on filtration is due to the fact most clients in these shows are loaded. with money as no object i'm sure we would all over filter our tanks...
  12. haha. when i move into new flats, it always says "no pets" so i ask them, are fishtanks ok..? and they say yeah, sure why not. then their eyes bulge when i start moving in my 6 foot and 4 foot tanks, along with a bunch of smaller ones lol... they were probably thinking a fishbowl...
  13. new house...? kitty should be the first thing on the nesting agenda!
  14. has anybody else deliberately created hybrids in the past? how did they turn out?
  15. sounds like we will have to stick to making new kinds of fish ourselves...
  16. the bigger ones can flick around if on land.. awesome for kitties to chase down! i've wondered in the past if there is another species of freshwater shrimp on the market. as in this thread, i'm pretty sure you're not supposed to sell them - but i have bought warm water shrimp from randoms on trademe before. and they do sometimes sell in LFS. but aside from native (coldwater) shrimp there are no other species allowed in NZ. i would be interested to hear if you are successful in adapting wild caught shrimp to warm water... let me know how it goes 8)
  17. yeah i know they can... i'm just saying, i've never been able to get wild ones to do it though. maybe if you acclimated them over a couple of weeks to higher temps.. but you might just find they just turn pink and start looking delicious..
  18. jack has a point here. if importing new species is not profitable, and such a high risk, then we wouldn't have had any exotic fish species imported here in the first place? but we already have so many already here to choose from (something i don't take for granted) at the end of the day it is entirely up to the importers to be able to spot a market opening and fill it. they really are the only ones with the knowledge and experience to decide... so all we can do is make a noise and hope it sways their decisions 8)
  19. you know they probably won't survive in a tropical tank. if they manage to escape being eaten they only live about an hour in my tank anyway. it's 23 degrees. i used to put them in a barrel outside in the shade and they would be sweet till i needed them for food
