  1. i dunno much about gobys... but im sure some of them dont need brackish water. other fun and very small fish to have are shellies.. shell dwelling cichlids. small, cheap, full of personality, and very interesting to watch...
  2. my mum used to find legless lizards in paparoa when she was young... early 60s... i wonder if there are any of these left around. they would make a cool pet - depending on regulations obviously.
  3. so there are absolutely no snakes in NZ? i recently got my jollies visiting the giant crocs at butterfly creek. holy moly they are huge. awesome display of alligators there as well. almost worth the wallet rapage to get in....
  4. is there anywhere in NZ that is allowed/authorised to keep snakes? i would love to handle one... but i would not love to go to australia to do it....
  5. you should definitely try cichlids. some cichlids would be fine - as they are very small. some dwarf cichlids are difficult to keep, namely the apistogrammas - more reserved for advanced aquarists. but as i have suggested, kribensis are hardy, have awesome character and 2-5 of them would be fine in a 100 litre tank, just make sure you have lots of hidey places trust me you will come to love cichlids..
  6. kribensis would be a good fish to start with.
  7. what about this guy? reckons he doesn't even know the parents? yet he's calling them red texas... anyone know this person? http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 287570.htm
  8. a kokopu would fare well against the turtles too...
  9. go catch an eel and throw it in...
  10. i have had convict cichlids survive in an outdoor tank over winter here in auckland. they even bred. danios or mountain minnows would be your best bet. but... why not just get more (small) goldfish?
  11. you just gotta be patient dude. a watched pot....
  12. i just noticed that i really need to clean the glass :roey:
  13. resident blue tongue... that's so cool. see that's what i always thought, they would do a bit of basking in direct sunlight, and then spend the rest of their day looking for food, or if in captive, being a lazy lizard under a rock or covered in bark. i have my heat lamp on all day, and i think that i could get away with only having the power thirsty UV light on from 8am till lunchtime. it would sure save some $$ on the power bill. (usually i don't run the UV through summer anyway because he spends enough time in his outside pen)
  14. you're not having much luck with the whole imagey posty thingy lately are ya... would you like some lessons?
  15. wow bro you really have got stock down to a bare minimum! i bet brutus is much happier without all the other giants getting in his way though.
  16. my one does the same, i also have a long tube UV. i appreciate that they are active during twilight. does this mean i can have the UV bulb on for much shorter periods during the day? usually he hides the whole time it's on.. seems a waste of power. if he needs UV, and the light is only on for say two hours a day, will he come out when it's on to gain the UV he needs?
  17. not just from this thread but mostly all through the boards i often hear people complaining that we can't get this and can't get that in NZ.... frustrations been building up and unfortunately this thread fell victim to my release... 8)
  18. cmon guys. us kiwis are lucky to have anything that isn't native to or been established in nz for hundreds of years. MAF/council doesn't have to let anything come in if they didn't feel like it, what do they care about the hobbyist? yet we have thousands of types of non nz fish, a decent selection of non nz reptiles, birds and mammals... personally i think we are lucky that authorities are catering to hobbyists in any way at all!! another reason not to complain is that - we all love our little country, it's uniqueness, the fragility our native flora and fauna is something we can never lose sight of! none of us would ever do anything intentionally to harm our ecosystem.. and even a tiny risk of that happening is a huge risk, imo.. count your blessings for they are abundant...!
  19. have you started a build thread for your new monster tank?
