  1. well then godly i retract my offer. learn something new every day hey 8)
  2. i saw on the news a while ago some lady down in the SI had like a turtle rescue thing going on, she had heaps of them roaming around her section, most being unwanted pets. track her down? despite the name, i was surprised to see a turtle in turtle lake in the hamilton gardens. it was huge. can they breed in the wild here?
  3. an outside tank could be a goer for you then?
  4. well, i'm never 100% sure. but logically, if you have bubbles, oxygen will be dissolving.. i guess the faster moving the current is, the more "white" water there will be, and the more bubbles get in the water from splashes and turbulence on the surface...
  5. hmm... i wonder if there are many, if any, in south island waterways. stella will know. i wouldn't mind shipping you some if you really want them... no idea how they'd go in transit though. probably not very well...
  6. if you have bubbles in the tank, whether from the filter or an air pump, you can be pretty sure there is enough dissolved oxygen. the smaller the bubbles, the better.
  7. i thought the shrimp like it cold.. wonder what their limit is. the streams up here get quite cold through winter, obviously not as cold as down there. what's your technique? i look for areas where there is green plants growing around the edges and in the shallow parts of the stream, and drag my net through the plants. seems to be the only place they are. i've never caught any where there is no plants growing out of the water.
  8. i thought this was the reason he can't have a goat....
  9. went netting in lucas creek in albany today, in under half an hour i had netted approximately 50-60 shrimp and a couple of baby bullies, common i think. all are now in my unheated planted tank which has been sitting between 20-22c for the last couple of days. most of the shrimp are quite small. i will let you know how they fare in my tank. hoping they will clean out the hair grass. so fun to watch, such little busy bodies! spent another hour trying to net some of the many inanga there. but they are way too fast. plus i was being stalked by a couple of really big eels who were probably well aware i was stealing their lunch hahaha but seriously they were some of the biggest eels i've ever seen, pretty sure they were long fins. also saw a huge carp or koi fish there. i was meaning to take a thermometer to see the temp of their natural habitat but forgot. dammit.
  10. you can always ship it up to me, i'll look after it
  11. yeah just that they were often still small when they went pink. being in a shrimp only tank i'm pretty sure ammonia wasn't the problem...
  12. shouldn't do too much damage, maybe eat a fish or two..? btw it's quite awesome that he just turned up!
  13. i dunno but i reckon it's too warm in dis here places right now to keep dem shrimpy brothers in a home tank. last summer when i done it, they were ok for a bit but they had a real bad habit of legging up and turning pink, figured it was them being cooked... tank usually well over 22. still gonna give it a try gen, netting dem up in albany tamorrow, will get back to yas how it goes
  14. it's like buying a used car. even if it looks good you never know if someone's been doing rarkies in it. if you got the cash then do it right. because in this case a fail means floods and damage that can't be undone.
  15. off to a friends wedding with my protege. i hate weddings, but i go for the free food and booze.
  16. here in nz you get more time in prison for growing a few humble pot plants in the privacy of your own home than you do for beating an 18 year old female within inches of her life. but that is not the topic of this thread....
  17. this pleases me. let this thread be a place for posting news articles or similar, where people have been punished properly for animal cruelty.
  18. what spins my wheels? beers, cigarettes and girls. in that order.
