  1. i ate a monarch caterpillar once. didn't go down too well. or taste that good. therefore i second alan's advise above.
  2. pics please of your girl please CC! and yes i could be interested in your male convict, but not just yet... ima let my girl grow out a bit more.
  3. time to move it to a different spot in the house it seems
  4. it might have been the one i was perving at when i was down there. i wanted to pick it up on the way home, but... but.. i can't remember what happened now. i have heard people say that their female convict lost most of its orange/blue colours as it matured. hope not. but males do seem to get a lot darker when they get full size.
  5. i reckon you'll be sweet with two firemouths and two T bars in a 300l. especially if they are young when you get them. firemouths will end up around 15cm and the t bars a bit smaller. which won't be too much hassle. and i'd be willing to bet my left meatball that by the time the firemouths and Tbars have grown out to full size, the sickness will well and truly have it's fingers deep inside your brain and your wallet, and you will have a bigger tank by then (1-2 years depending how you feed them) just make sure they all have a little cave/territory for their own, not that these guys are very aggressive at all, but it would be the nice thing to do. it will be an exciting tank. what's the worst that can happen. all the other kids are doing it. it'll make you feel good etc etc... just do it!
  6. leave the kitten mitten knittin to the kitten mitten knitters
  7. this thread clearly demonstrates the incorrect way to keep fish! is there really anything we can do to help prevent this sorta stuff happening?
  8. nah she hasn't been bred. she is only around 4 months old, 2cm when i got her, now at least 6cm. she has grown quite fast. i have seen some interesting behaviour between her and the male JD, but nothing much more as yet. i think convict is still too young to breed. i think you are right, spawning, i imagine, would take a lot out of a female fish and could stunt their growth due to nutrients being used to make eggs rather than to make the fish bigger. i had a 5cm female JD lay eggs couple weeks ago. way earlier than i ever thought they could breed. but then i don't know its history, maybe the lady JD is stunted and a lot older than she looks. any eggs get eaten by the plecs pretty quickly anyway, once the lady fish realise spawning is futile then maybe she will stop producing eggs and focus more on growing?
  9. have a hunt around your garden or the local park. you'll find some creepy crawlies to feed to them. alan, are there any local bugs that are not ok to feed to LGs?
  10. here's a pic i found on an unrelated forum
  11. so if we saved the TM pic onto our own PC, changed the file name and deleted the TM user name from the pic, it is no longer "linked" to trade me, then i reckon we could slip it through on a technicality...
  12. the average joe bloggs nz citizen does not have any rights to keep any animal they desire, that's why we can't have pet ferrets, or snakes for that matter. no amount of protest could get ferrits back, or a shipment of piranha in for my uncles pond. so really, at the end of the day, what can the average nz pussylover do if they do decide to ban cats? nothing. it will be entirely up to the authorities and qualified/experienced individuals to decide what happens with cats. so, it would be in all cat owners interests to make their own steps towards solving this issue. i feel that irresponsible cat owners have been warned, and like a misbehaving kid, if they don't stop misbehaving then big daddy's gonna take their toys away. and speaking of "the authorities", i don't think anybody should be calling them crazy or any of the stink names that have been hiffed at them, not just here but in their daily lives as well. because, for a start, going ad-hoc gives you away as a biased "pussylover" and voids your opinion. try and remember that these fellows' only intention is to protect our beautiful but fragile and diminishing native animals. politely asking you to "consider" not replacing your cat, is really not a big deal after all is it. i personally will be buying a decent quality bell, and de-clawing my little feline psychopathic killer. i have also decided not to replace him when he retires (or gets run over, or decapitated with an axe by alans dad...)

  14. whoops, i meant to say firemouths, not t-bars. oh well, if you end up getting t-bars, then it will be a fortunate mistake in the end, t bars are choice.
  15. yeah i know what you mean. i have seen some pretty rough looking convict x hybrids too. my old male was stocky but no colour. i think i got pretty lucky with this girl, especially considering she was bought as a feeder. got her from hollywood in albany for $3. fed massivore, shrimp, ox heart, squid, and i've seen her picking bits off of mutilated feeder fish carcasses which my jag has spat out... good food and variety helps bring out the colour. i reckon she'll try breed with my male dempsey soon.
  16. i'll start, this is my ~6 month old female convict named "missus duncan" - got her as a baby with a bunch of other convicts for live food for my jag, she was the only one that managed to escape being eaten and now is big enough to hold her own against the jag. they make good tankmates.
  17. i love convicts. have always kept them. they get a bad wrap being so prolific and cheap, but many don't realise they are one of the most fun, interesting, intelligent and pretty fresh water fish you can get here. so i felt like doing a thread where people can talk about, or better, show off their convicts, breeding setups, whatever, anything to do with convict cichlids.
  18. should be sweet, unless they are NZ native fish... i have kept all sorts of "coldwater" fish in tropical tanks 22-27 with no worries at all.
  19. never trust appearances, always check ID. just cause she's in the club, don't mean you won't go to jail.... :bggrn:
  20. maybe it is just that particular type of rasbora wasn't known when they made the list? dunno. there are plenty of other rasboras on the list. these could have come in as juvis with a shipment of allowed rasboras. in either case, i hope maf isn't watching this thread... they might come take them off ya
  21. it's 60x85 cm and 2-3 mill thick. shoot me a text when you in the area. i'll leave it outside for you in case i'm not home.
