  1. + glass + stand + weight of shed itself + sump + filters etc.
  2. Yep. It can be heaps better than it currently is and I'm constantly chasing algae issues because it's only half planted. I figure if I treat it like an unplanted tank with a few little fert top ups here and there it'll be easier to manage. Most of the fish in there would prefer more sand space anyway.
  3. Took the motorbike for a ride along scenic drive. I'm now frozen. Good times. In other news - I'm re-replanning the big tank. Going to go minimalist with a planted island and heaps of black sand. I have 2 x 3 foot tanks ready to take the stock while I tear it down and re-start. It'll be a while away yet as I need to acquire more rocks.
  4. I think you mean http://www.aqadvisor.com. Take everything on there with a grain of salt. It's a great general calculator but I wouldn't count on it for fish temperament matching.
  5. now has sand and the light is on 12 hours a day to get through the algae phases of the cycle. I won't be touching this again for another few weeks except maybe to do small water changes.
  6. haha, thankfully (kinda) he bloated before somebody ate all the cockatoo fry so i can't blame him.
  7. good old comets will do really well in a pond. That said my friend has fancy tail goldfish in a pond he inherited when he bought the house and he doesn't run a filter on his pond and they still breed happily. Can't be too hard
  8. Only 100? I think the golden ratio is 100 per foot
  9. I just had a really good look and there aren't any scales sticking out from the body so perhaps not dropsy then. He seems in good spirits and isn't getting bigger so I'm not too worried.
  10. seen this http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=53961 ?
  11. The scales aren't protruding but I don't know any other reason for this to have happened. The water in this tank is probably the best in the house as I like to do a 10% change every day while I'm cooking dinner (read: avoiding the kids).
  12. Yeah, he's doing ok for now. Once he starts to show signs of being in pain I'll put him out of his misery. He's still eating everything and swimming like mad the length of the tank.
  13. back on topic. Tests show the tank has cycled! :bounce: woo hoo! Now to do some more research....
  14. in the last week my dominant black neon tetra has ballooned. ...damn focus...
  15. Good luck! They're a cool little group.
  16. Would you believe I'm considering downsizing all round?
  17. Meeting at work complete, now to run fish to the couriers. I hope they don't drink all the water I've given them.
  18. Yeah, that too. It about time you got yourself a marine isn't it?
  19. I'd go with a pond liner for that size.
  20. Marine aquariums don't like all the extra minerals etc. included in tap water. You'd spend all your time trying to remove these from the aquarium rather than concentrating on giving the tank what it needs.
  21. Then it will all wash out through the whole tank and you'll be forever wishing you had only used a little . Probably not a 'problem' but it won't look as awesome. This is just my opinion of course...
  22. I disagree, kinda - as long as it's only a few mm thick it'll look awesome and will only go back into the first few rows of pebbles. You might have to add a handful every couple of months to counter what does filter back into the other river stones but it should look good as long as it's only a thin layer. If you're aiming for a couple of cm's thick you're going to have problems.
  23. If you acclimated the fish slowly enough they won't mind the change. Sounds like they're doing well though so all good.
