  1. 2 foot deep but how long/deep? I've got metal halides over my 2 foot deep tank but it's 5 foot long and 2.5 wide so needs the spread. Either T5HO units or halides would be your best bet.
  2. He builds them himself and they are very very well made tanks. Be sure to specify how/if you want overflow holes drilled etc.
  3. yep, exactly. The first fill you can guestimate based on the number of litres, after that do the same with the bucket/tank you're pre-mixing in and use the refractometer to fine tune. +fresh water - lower salinity +salt - higher salinity -evaporation - higher salinity, top up with fresh
  4. It would explain why Ryan's female got the crap beaten out of her in my tank and just didn't take to any of the males.
  5. As above. Also - to be sure get a refractometer to measure the relative density (salltiness) that way you'll always know you've got it just right. I bought mine from fish-street.com for about $30 and it was here in 2 weeks.
  6. or 3 Aqua One 1200s (if they're still on special at HFF?). I run 2 on my 700L and they're pretty good but the third would make all the difference.
  7. He's totally back to normal today. Must have been a blockage somewhere.
  8. Cool, thanks. This is the one thing I learnt today.
  9. Thanks! So I guess the trick is to get a balance between fermentation and multiplication to keep it going long term. Would adding an air stone to the yeast mix for an hour a day help this? Perhaps it's a lost cause.
  10. I'm genuinely interested in this comment alan, can you explain it further? I get the feeling there's something to learn here that you're alluding to but I don't quite get the full potential of it. How do you 'get your yeast working properly' without sugar?
  11. I've been running Muriwai black silica for a few months now and there is absolutely nothing that leeches out of it. It also gets darker over time (less obvious brown/gold patches).
  12. well spotted! I just assumed...
  13. co2 bubles out of the tube through the water until the yeast dies off and stops producing bubbles. I use it as a bubble counter. I agree it can't be used for accurate bubble counting like with a pressurised system but it's a great indicator for how much co2 your yeast mix is producing.
  14. bubble counter and also safety in case the co2 mixture explodes out of the first bottle. It lessens the chance that you'll dump yeast/sugar into your tank. But first and foremost it's a bubble counter.
  15. Tanks is looking very very brown today. I might head over to aquaworld tomorrow to see if they've got any good little HOB skimmers in their sale.
  16. neither/both - they're both good, neither is better.
  17. dwarf cichlids would be great in that size tank but I would only recommend 1 pair. Depending on the filtration some corydoras and a couple of tetra would be great tank mates.
  18. I've been treating the whole tank with a coralife uv steriliser for the last few days so should now be free of all medical issues. Changed the 6500k MH bulbs for 10000K bulbs too and the difference is amazing. Just in time to shut the tank down...
  19. I had salmon tonight. It wasn't very good.
  20. I'm thinking of a mid week ski trip next week if it all works out. Would Ohakune be far enough?
  21. What Jen said but also - the algae in the pics shows there's too much light and not enough plant growth. So going back to 4 hours a day for a couple of weeks should settle things down.
  22. Anybody in Auckland done the Shark Dive at Kelly Tarlton's?
  23. 6000-7000 will be better for plants.
  24. Really? Sweet! This post is just to see what I've got... edit: 5 stars! I don't know that I should consider that a good thing...
