  1. Want to buy a big tank? It'd be awesome in your garage. You know you want to....
  2. Looks great! Is it gib lined? If so wouldn't the standard plus4 and sureseal do the trick?
  3. spent the morning skiing at Turoa. Off for a bike ride now. Whakapapa tomorrow then home in time for the pet expo on Friday. I have 2 female cockatiels that need a new home if anybody is interested? Also feeling the need to get the big tank up and running again. Bloody power bill has gone through the roof though. Still - it feels wrong to not be using a tank that big.
  4. For reference I had mine 500mm above the water on a 600mm deep planted tank and it was plenty. Would put it closer for marine use but not much. For your tank I'd position it so that the spread just touches the edges of the bottom of the tank and go from there.
  5. Ahh, clearly they're having certificate issues. You can tell your browser to proceed anyway - what it's saying is that the certificate issued to bigpond is up for renewal or somebody has marked their website/ip address as a source of spam. I wouldn't worry too much about it and just progress anyway.
  6. add UV to the treatment plan but only if you get the flow right. White spot has a specific life cycle and will "fall off" the fish after a few days and become water borne for a few days before/after a few days in the substrate (I can't remember which). A UV filter gets it when it's in the water as do most/all other meds. As alanmin said salt for 7 days is the easiest way to treat it though.
  7. I love upside down cats. I hope they do turn out to be good snail hunters.
  8. I've been wondering... I always have 1 or 2 and there's often a ton of babies on some plant or the glass but then after a few weeks they're gone. Maybe they've gone into the sand to give it a stir? Who knows. I don't see them anyway. Of course now I'm about to reach critical mass because I've tempted fate and I'll have snails for Africa.
  9. They won't survive in my tanks. No idea why... :dunno:
  10. Yeah, he'll still be getting some when you're not looking It may be too late for startsmart. I'd use Seachem Prime and daily 5L water changes to reduce the harm caused by the nitrite to the fish.
  11. You'll be wanting 10000K - 14000K bulbs for marine so you're best bet is to replace the ones that come with the fittings. They're not expensive through fish-street.com.
  12. It's the nitrite you want to get to 0 - then you know it's cycled. Nitrate can then be managed with water changes. If you're feeding the pleco with pleco tabs or wafers you'll probably find he'll get to it in the evening/overnight. He'll also scavenge around for algae and the like if he can't find food. If you're feeding with community food or flake then he'll probably be missing out but I wouldn't worry too much.
  13. Perfectly fine. I've got a 300w jager in each of my 2 3 foot 150L tanks with no problems. They bring the hose water up to temperature really fast
  14. TLC make StartSmart and similar products. They're technically a 'treat once' and go from there solution to help start the tank. Prime and the like are for treating water for water changes primarily but they also can be used in emergencies for managing ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. In essence TLC products are a good once off startup treatment for any tank but I haven't seen a TLC water conditioner on the market. I'm happy to be proven wrong though
  15. The deck was white for about 20 minutes here in central Auckland. It was rain then hail then snow then hail again then rain. Apparently there has been a second wave this afternoon further south (wellingtonish) so hoping for more this evening/tonight. I've been huddling over a heater all day, I'm such a girl.
  16. Hi Mike, All of the above but I've also had great experiences with the aqua one tanks so take it all with a grain of salt. The lighting in the rio is probably better for a planted tank though. Is this your first or one of many? If you're adding discus to either of these tanks I'd consider adding an extra canister filter to boost the bio filtration.
  17. I have 2 big bags of crypts that I'll bring along tonight in case anybody wants them.
  18. It was more of a stay of execution... I'm keeping all stock and will start again in a month or 2 once I've figured out where I'm living. In the meantime all the remaining stock is coming with me in 2 x 3foot tanks.
  19. water changed. took the rest of the swords out of the big tank in preparation for shutting it down. Turns out there's a ton of chain sword growing in the crypts which was a nice surprise. Going to move fish tomorrow/sunday and then decide on what to do with the remaining plants before turning it off.
  20. Sorry I missed the meeting. I went skiing so couldn't quite make the 4 hour drive. Dedication I know. Just replied to the club email. Will try to get to the meeting on Sunday at Ryan's.
  21. Congratulations! I find they always seem to find more than enough food in my planted tank with bits of flake that get missed by the bigger fish. They also seem to like to snack on the algae that's growing on bits of rock or wood. I seem to lose mine at about week 4 so if you're keen to keep them I'd remove the mum and all other fish in the tank after a week of showing the fry what and where to eat. How did I know Joe would want a picture of the male?
  22. showing/selling some lemon tetra then off to the mountain for a few days.
  23. It'll be good but it'll also be overkill unless you've got a really deep tank. That said - seeing as you have the light already you might as well give it a go. Aren't putting it back on the marine setup?
  24. I have both and the car is more practical. I wouldn't recommend having only a bike but if you can have both life is good.
