  1. thankyou for your replies and also editors comments we do need a bit of humour i suppose definitely here in earthquake city however this is a problem that is not really funny to me as it is not good i dont think to have fish behaving like they are on a race track and bashing themselves against the glass the angels i am talking about are in a bare tank as i am trying to get them to breed and the suggestion re reflection i will certainly look at thankyou it does make some sense heres hoping something will now work and they will settle down
  2. i have a two tiered fish tank housing two 4 foot tanks my problem is the fish in top tank at eye height seem to do well while fish in bottom tank appear skitterish i have heard that the fish in bottom tank would feel uncomfortable just viewing my legs going past tank is approximately 18 inches off the ground and this maybe correct however i am left with this two tier setup and am wondering if other people have had this problem and successfully rectified it any ideas
  3. hi allan this is about the situation i am in and your theory sounds interesting any chance of a phone number so we can discuss the matter further
  4. my angels are laying eggs everywhere except where i want them to i understand this is quite a common habit i have made up pieces of slate and also glass putting them on a 45degree angle to give the fish a good and convenient place to run up but no they then lay on the filter i put mesh around that the tank looks like a war zone then they lay on the tank glass or heater if they would just lay on the slate or glass from where i could transfer the eggs to a small hatching tank then life would be so much easier anyone had this problem and has a solution i would like to hear about it
  5. hi everyone and thankyou all for taking the time to reply to me however one gets thoroughly confused i think depending on who you talk to and i think as in breeding fish you have to learn for better or worse from hands on experience i have had a fluvall work for me quite satisfactorily over a number of years the only problem i had was priming the damn thing and getting all air bubbles out of the system but this was an old model and hopefully the newre ones are much better i think in the long run you do pay for what you get but one could probably argue you could buy a new fluvall every two to three years ;for about ten years for the price of the top of the line eheim like heaters i heard of someone buying beautiful discus at great expense and cooking them with an aqua one heater maybe investment in an eheim heater would have been a better proposition my problem at the moment is i have about 12 discus in three five foot tanks these each have 3 large bio sponge filters in them as i have witnessed in breeders tank photos on trade me they are run by a very large air pump but i am not completely confident with the water quality even i do at least one good water change per week i was thinking perhaps i would be better to do away with these and substitute eheim filters such as a 2128 in each of these tanks it is not actually the initial monetary outlay but the end result i am interested in what do others think any comments would be helpful many thanks
  6. was interested in bilbos comments and have a question i have five discus in a 5foot tank in my garage trying to get a couple to pair off this has a bare bottom and i do weekly water changes which seems to work ok i have three large bio sponge filters in this tank should i clean them all each time i do a water change in there own water i believe or am i then losing some of the bacteria media
  7. hi thankyou everyone for all your information and funnily just today i am having the same trouble with a jewel filters inability to heat tank properly and i dont trust heater i screwed it right up but it wasnt working overnight and temperature has dropped to 65 degrees poor discus however have now put a large 300 watt heater outside of filter casing and things hopefully will return to normal i like the idea of the water flowing through the filter casing but i wonder if it is stopping some heater heat getting into the tank i keep the top sponge very clean and i think this helps somewhat i am told that sometimes these heaters are made and calibrated for a little warmer conditions than we have here in new zealand not sure whether this is correct or not
  8. i am interested in buying a large eheim for my large tank am looking at either the filter with the heater or one without heater i have been told dont touch the one with heater but it would be good for me can anyone give me advice please if maybe you have one of these with heater installed how is it working for you
