Hello to all Lately i've been fascinated with Kribensis an there personalities And I was just wondering what is actually available in NZ? After looking at this I was curious http://www.fishbase.org/NomenClature/Sc ... ackstep=-2 Cheers Sam

we recently got chickens and they have gotten broody so you may want to think about what to do when that happens

I personally found it made my water go yellow faster using stress zyme. And they guy at my LFS told me that when its shipped over here it pretty much kills 80% of what bacteria was actually alive in it so theres really no point getting it... I cycled my tank with fish in it an never had any troubles with loses but chch has stupidly clean water so just doing a water change made such a difference
-
I agree with Ryan, kribs will give you alot of entertainment aren't to aggressive an can just be an addition to any other fish you want in there They are a really cool fish
-
I would get kribensis, they are a hardy fish an colourful with personality an they raise up there own babies for upto 4months Ryan has the best kirbs ive seen in NZ and they aren't the common ones you see at petshops
-
congratz on the breeding success! always exciting when it happens haha to bad your in dorkland, if you were in chch I could cut plastic to any size for ya,then you could put dividers in your tank to make lots of small houses for male fighters

trademe is your best bet on the reptile section,or fish tank section ALTERNATELY, you could buy say one of those 50$ bookcases from the warehouse(or again trademe a 2nd hand 1) an then take out the middle shelves an do a weebit of cutting here an there cover it with some mesh an a hinged lid.cost you next to nothing compared to a new one... if you have someone to help out with tools an stuff plywood sheets cost about 30$ ea I think, youd only need 1 or 2 and about 3m of timber an a roll of mesh. tools needed hand saw drill/hammer staple gun(to hold mesh in place) those "U" type nails to fix mesh once you got it placed right screws/nails tape measure an straight edge(you can use timber as straight edge if you cut it last ) could be a good weekend project for ya! I used to make rat cages the same way when I had like 15rats

wow thats intense! I've never seen so many stitches on a cat! Our cat got in a fight and had to go to the vet recently to cost about 150$ for injections twice a week for 2 weeks lol his fur still hasn't grown back.when they fight it really is ear piercing stuff
-
why waste a frog for that....

Sad to hear, keep us posted an good luck with the fisheeee... like others have said darkness +stress coat would be the way to go. I have recently lost a new fish to similar conditions only it was all my fault that time :'( at least you have done everything right

as others have said, I find having plants helps alot, big tall ones are the best... also try not cleaning your filter for a month or 2.. because if you clean it to often it won't do you much good, but you also don't want it to be clogged. I've got an overstocked 170L tank with a 150L filter an its been doing really well over the last 2 weeks because I haven't cleaned it in quite a while. seems to get better filtration the dirtier it is O_O

Just some info on those racking you guys are talking about.absolutely rubbish.perfect for holding things that don't matter, but they are cheap flimsy pieces of crap. Today at work I cleaned up after 2 of those full of stock had fallen down, anything that was breakable broke(even most sealed in boxes with polystyrene protection) after seeing how our warehouse did I can only recommend the heavy duty shelfing, big thick steel cross beams. this stuff http://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-farmi ... 000064.htm not one of them is bent or moved in anyway an they held up very well.an not 1 piece of stock has moved from them.its not cheap but in the long run, it could save you thousands on remaking tanks ---- unrelated to the shelfing, my 170L tank sits on a 50year old wooden dresser, solidly built but the unfortunate thing is it has 4 feet on the bottom. When I walk up to the tank I can see my movements shaking the water an if I jump up an down the whole thing shakes dangerously. This moved ALOT during the quake, so much so that I put all my weight on the dresser when I was sprung into action on saturday.Although the tank an dresser both moved heaps it didn't give in an the tank is hanging off the edge a wee bit but apart from that it surprisingly held up well.My other 2 tanks sit on a flimsy old table about 3cm thick with 4 big long legs, it also held up well considering the amount it moved.I am amazed they held up an seriously worried about another quake hitting.but yea if you can get your hands on some solid old furniture its definitely worth the buy.I'd also avoid putting anything hard up against walls as this is probably one of the reasons I came off so well.SO GLAD because my peacock female had just gotten eggs on friday night!

id like to know toanyone know how they are doing?

I've got 2 preg female cichlids an one is about 2-3 weeks preg the other has just done the deed two nights ago the one who is 2-3weeks preg is getting very skinny, her fry have tails but still look quite egg shaped. shes lost about 30% body mass maybe more.Got her in a net breeder but just wondering if itd be better to strip her or weither its safe to let her get skinnier so the fry can grow abit. I am aware of the negatives for stripping Cheers Sam

WOW it was intense, my tank sits on a rocky dresser that will shudder if I step to firmly on the ground next to it, its moved aprox 10cm off the dresser an me half asleep panicing an stressing as the whole thing shakes side to side while i attempt to hold it in place! 180L tank lost about 20L I was just thankful it didn't get any worse or I wouldn't have been able to hold it I have 2 spare tanks an power an water if anyone in chch gets desperate txt me 02102795337 http://www.crashbang.co.nz/quake040910/ cant help but wonder if redwood aquatics has a generator, might call an see if they need help with anything because they have a huge amount of tanks there im sure its a bloody mess

At my work we use shaving style blades to cut away the silicone(get at bunnings for like 10$ a pack) for a tank you could empty it completely an use a ruler to make a straight edge cut into the silicone(not to hard you don't wana scratch the glass) from there use the blade again on a flat angle on the glass to remove the excess, do this a few times an it should be almost gone.We use turps to remove old silicone an it works fine but im not sure how safe it would be on a tank, at the least you would wana wash it a couple of times an allow it to dry an washing again then refilling an draining a few times an let it sit between washes, IF you do use turps always test the tank with a guppy or platty before putting your 100$ fish in there but im pretty sure the turps disolves anyway but I personally wouldn't use the tank with out cleaning it an allowing it to dry multiple times. when I removed silicone off showers that leak an need to be resealed i get the blade running basically flat on the glass but with just enough angle to take off the silicone fully, it works very well but you need a thin sharp blade(for best results dont use a craft knife blade they are not thin) I can actually remove 99% of silicone with these blades by just going over an over the spot an the remaining .01% is removed with mineral turps if you want next time I clean some glass il take a quick vid of how to.. alternately you could take all the silicone off an clean with turps an reseal it yourself with a chalking gun? the wet excess is easily removed with a rag or if you don't mind a small lump you can mask it up,iceblocks sticks an soapy water is a good way to practice getting those lines perfect hope this helps

O_O older topic but my brother has 1 survivor wcmm from his dead tank, it apparently ate all its tank mates.he had kribs an guppys an minnows an then his heater died an this was the only thing left from his fish keeping, it survived the drop an continued to live in cold water until I got it.still alive an well today lol a very hardy fish that has been from 10-28 degrees with absolutely no problems, soft water hard water dirty tanks clean tanks, in with aggressive cichlids an catfish of all sorts
