  1. Depends on the age of the house. Best to put tanks over 4ft crosswise to the main joists and against a load bearing wall. We have wooden floors and have never considered the tank weight (280kg) to be a problem (although I think there is an extra pile under our main tank as it was where the fireplace was to originally go). Think of the weight of 3 or 4 large footy boys sitting on your sofa then think of the tank weight. Do you have a large chest freezer? Have you ever had it full? I imagine, if you had, it would weigh more than even a large aquarium.

House stinks again as last coat of polyurethane has gone onto the new window frames. In case anyone is interested, it did not occur to me to do anything to the tank that is in the same room as the work being done but the fish are fine. Went swimming with friends this morning, then we sat in the spa pool to warm up further before enjoying a nice lunch at Chequers Cafe and Bar  Am now shut in the computer room to try and reduce the smell from the other end, while looking for stuff to put in the next AW magazine.
  3. Are you talking about something other than microworms or brine shrimp?
  4. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=59840 I don't think hoplos care too much about ratios.
  5. That is a good example of "using your noodle" :slfg:
  6. Fish keeping - you're doing it wrong :slfg:
  7. If you do a search you will find quite a few
  8. It isn't a fish breeding competition, it is for the fish breeding certificates for the competition
  9. Wash your mouth out Sophia! Besides, Joe is an excellent baker himself and often provides goodies for club meetings

The Foxy Morons won Quiz Night tonight :happy1: :happy2: :bounce:
  11. I have various sized poly boxes here Joe. Doesn't one of your tanks have a light attached to a high fixture? Can't you put the container on the tank lid so it is under the tank light?
  12. So the albino BNs are in a different tank to the one where the common BNs were dying? 8 in a 50L is waaay too many!
  13. Ira's favourite (and a common) spelling error :slfg: The original fish, once discovered in their natural habitat, were promptly wiped out as they were grabbed for the aquarium trade. They can only now be found in captivity. There are cheaper, more pale, versions from elsewhere available here.
  14. OK, this is currently being printed and will be sent out sometime this week. Those lucky enough to receive a copy will be able to read about and/or see some great photos from... 15. My favourite fish!!! I don't have a tank big enough for them though
  16. This is for designing a breeding certificate Anthony, not for actually breeding any fish
  17. Any more entries? You have until the end of the week :bounce:
  18. People please! The language being used recently is unacceptable for a family friendly forum (even if it is sometimes children using it). Joe, you could have said "Sorry for the poor quality photos" and Godly3vil could have replied "Poor quality? Rubbish!" There is no need for the casual use of profanity that is creeping into posts.
  19. Back to your original question :gigl: hoplos get on with other bottom dwellers. Mine are in with corys and Ancistrus. There was a lady breeding them in Dunedin many years ago and she said a drop in water level, and water temp, would trigger them spawning.
  20. I had a rock pool marine set up for a couple of years and it was a great little tank. It had a HOB filter but no skimmer or anything else. I had a problem with heat though as it got too hot over summer months so I definitely recommend a chiller. Wouldn't go smaller than the 3ft either I don't think. I had anemones, chitons, rockfish, triplefins, hermit crab, sea cucumber, shrimps and, for a while, a baby octopus.
  21. A change in pH from 7 - 7.6 is a huge swing and, as zev said, would have caused the gasping. Remember is is a logarithmic scale

We have building consents in at the local council for our garage extension. We had planned to build it (with fire wall) on the back boundary as there is only a council reserve behind us so we did not think we would have a problem. Council has just informed our builder that they want $900 to ask themselves if they will give us permission to build on the boundary so we have told then we have changed our mind and will move the back wall forward 700mm so consent is not required.
  24. Mine used to feed at the bottom but now come and eat at the surface with the other fish before heading back down to snuffle up the plec pellets. Did you realise they are bubble nesters? A very interesting fish to breed.
