  1. Sometimes you have a fish that stands out and requires a name but otherwise - no.
  2. Thank you for your kind words Andrew. I would have printed more of your photos too if the cost wasn't prohibitive. Anyone who would like to send articles for the Aquarium World is most welcome to do so!
  3. It was obviously meant to be! Our tank sits on extra piles too as, when we built our house, we weren't sure where the fireplace was going to go so added extra piles to two different places in anticipation. One of them now has the tank above it.
  4. We have a company here that makes the stuff. I have a friend who works there who gets me what I need. Among other things, the company makes the cool store things Alan mentions and prefab housing. They also produce the shaped poly boxes for packing wine bottles etc. We had a tour of the place once and it was very interesting how it is made.
  5. They are called Jack Dempsey's for a reason
  6. Gee I wish I had been asleep at 2.30am! Bad night. Almost got up to check the forums but finally fell asleep. Welcome to the fishroom brett. You will find plenty of marine enthusiasts here to whet you appetite and give advice.

    Hi guys

Hi jerygarry and welcome. I too think you may be a bit overstocked there. I hope you have very good filtration and do plenty of water changes or I think you will lose more fish. I haven't heard of a panther danio, must look them up. I know about leopard and zebra danios though
  8. I understand these are tricky fish to keep but if anyone can do it I am sure you can! Good luck with them
  9. Kellsz means daphnia Logan. It clears green water really fast but only if you can remove the fish first or they eat the daphnia before it can do its job. Try reducing the feeding and light first.
  10. The guppy is also known as the millions fish - and not because it costs a lot!

    My Dream Coral

As a matter of interest, why is this your dream coral? What has it got the others don't or what is it that appeals particularly? I mean no disrespect to the coral in question, just curious to know why this particular one pushes your buttons.
  12. What sneaky Danes! Great idea! Must try it
  13. If you are a guppy, and female, you are sure to be pregnant  Congratulations!
  14. I have heard of people using hair rollers and those practise golf balls with all the holes in them.
  15. Bruce was suggesting a public Fish Display (and maybe an auction again) weekend Interfecus. Hawkes Bay club organised one a couple of years ago and several members of our club, along with many others from around the country, travelled up there and had a great time. He is suggesting it, I believe, as a way for fish keepers to meet, other than at conference. Most members do not attend conference, even when it is in NZ. There is a lot of work involved in organising these large events so anyone volunteering needs all the help and encouragement they can get! At least you ought to know how the tank stands fit together this time Bruce!
  16. That sounds good Bruce. We certainly enjoyed ourselves last time your club hosted an event  . If I can help in any way again with posters etc don't hesitate to ask.
  17. I asked our local agents for prices and they at first said they could do it cheaper but when they started checking further, discovered they couldn't. We do not have children to think about (it is great when they leave home! ) so do not have those extra expenses. One of our club members is looking for babysitters so she and her husband can enjoy a break away
  18. I suggest you miss the Eheim 2229 wet/dry. We hare having major trouble with ours and all I can find is others saying the same thing but no one having the answer I gather other Eheims are well recommended. My understanding is the price difference between brands has to do with the quality of the plastics used. The cheaper brands don't last as long or break more easily. Having tried all sorts of filters over the years I have gone right off external canisters filters entirely. More trouble and expense than they are worth IMO! AquaClears go well for years, it's easy to see when they need cleaning, and easy to clean as well.
  19. The eggs will get eaten but if the baby guppies have survived so far they have a chance. Are there plenty of fine leaved plants for them to hide in? Just make sure some of the flake food is ground up fine in your fingers when feeding them and they will find bits to eat. Why should your fish look embarrassed? Are they not married? Organisms is not multiple by the way, it is Organism  and you are right, you have to be very very careful with the spelling  . Great little shop isn't it
  20. Most oscar tanks I have seen have a light covering of gravel and a couple of rocks so there is not too much mess when they start rearranging the landscape! You don't want rocks stacked up anywhere where the fish can dig underneath and topple one. One squashed fish or cracked tank may result. A large piece of driftwood would look nice and help create a focal point for the landscape. See if you can find one the same length of the tank so you can jam it in the corners so it is one thing the fish can't uproot  Some people have managed to use Java fern as it is a tough plant and fish don't like them so much. I would anchor some to the driftwood. You can tie it down with fishing line or jam the roots into a crack or hole in the wood somewhere. If you are putting a heater in the tank (rather than having something outside like an undertank heatpad) the plastic protective coverings may be a cheaper option than a steel heater.

    Root Blast

Robbo it was 6 or 7 years ago! If I remember correctly the fertilisers made a small difference over the 3 months but not a lot. May have made a bigger difference over a longer period, who knows?
  22. Wonder what they're thinking? At least you now have some bristlenoses.

    Root Blast

My son did a plant experiment for the Science Fair and did very well. It impressed the judges because he had to do it over at least a 3 month period. His idea was to see if plant fertilisers actually worked. He had a 3ft tank divided into 3. All were set up identically. He then added to each - one baby tears, one sprite and one other (hygrophila I think) I can't remember. All cut to the same height so each of the 3 tanks had 3 plants. He noted down the plant lengths. In the first tank he used plant fertiliser tablets as per packet instructions, the middle tank was the control so had nothing added and the 3rd tank he used a liquid fertiliser. Each week he measured and noted the length of each plant and plotted them on a graph. For the actual fair he did not take the tank etc but drew graphs and stuff with pics of what he had set up showing the growth rates of all the plants and his results.
