Hi there xarianz and welcome. Don't be shy! Come and join us in chat one evening. There is usually a group of us in there from 9pm. Not me tonight though as I am going to see Billy Connolly!!! Did you know Dunedin has an aquarium club? Some of their members are here too.
  2. There are a few other spelling mistakes there Jack but I didn't like to mention them  Looking good so far and looking forward to progress reports and pics.

Don't start that agin Alan! http://www.nzfreshwater.org/galaxiids.html may be of interest to you. There are quite a few species and some may be restricted but I have kept the local variety. A very pretty fish. For those of you not sure what fish these are - they are the species commonly known as whitebait
  4. Congratulations polgara! They are pretty good survivors.
  5. plain newsprint or paper towels would work too.
  6. Gee, you must have a different recipe!

Hi and welcome budak. Hopefully we will see more of you and you will tell us a bit about what fish and/or plants you have.
  8. I vote for cheesecake
  9. You can't see faults in a pic from a distance Warren

I wouldn't use an undergravel filter with goldfish as theyare too messy. I would use a HOB myself.
  11. It is a fund raising thing the FNZAS does. Stamps and phone cards are collected to sell second hand. It does not raise much but every it helps.

Hi Alisha and welcome. I understand feeding seahorses can be very time consuming!
  13. If they are also Ancistrus sp I would guess them to be the same. I don't suppose the snowflake is possibly just an albino colour morph? Personally I have not seen either of them but they sound interesting. I saw some blue ones on another site the other day and they looked neat! The long finned one wouldn't actually be a sailfin plec would it?
  14. I suspect a typo Rob and it was meant to be a Pak (Pakistani) loach but I may be wrong
  15. Welcome chuckles. What size is the tank and how long has it been set up? Is the pH usually that low in it? Does it have live or plastic plants and is it well planted or quite bare? How often do you do water changes? What are the ammonia nitrite and nitrate readings? What else is in the tank (eg decorations, driftwood etc) and what filtration are you using? I would suggest you find the cause of the problem rather than mask it with products to raise the pH.

Hi and welcome. I am a bit concerned about the number of fishes you already have in the tank. Did you cycle the tank first? Adding that many fish to a new tank can cause problems.
  17. They are probably very fine and clear. The fry are very hard to see when first hatched as they are so small. I found shining a torch down from above helped as their eyes reflected off the light. One of our members successfully bred hundreds of wwmm years ago in warm water but I always kept mine in cold. Both of us had successful spawnings.
  18. You can go rockpooling any time Andrew. Come and join the party! Dark, we will be gentle - at first.
  19. I rarely fed them at all to be honest. From memory (it was a few years ago) algae grew around the sides of the container so they browsed on that. I think I occasionally added a very small bit of fine fish food but can't remember sorry. They must have reproduced because 12 months later there were large and small ones swimming about. They need a lot of surface area I think which is why they tend to die in small containers (eg bottles for feeding fry). If we got a bucket of live shrimp from Grassmere, you had to get it back to town ASAP ( a 30 min trip) or most would be dead. Adding a battery operated air stone helped a lot with survival rates. Of course, there were hundreds in the bucket whereas I had relatively few in my container so they were not crowded.
  20. I had them growing in a plastic container. They grew a reasonable size and reproduced. I just used a square container, put some sand in the bottom, added sea water and brine shrimps then left it in the sun. It got topped up as the water evaporated. I only grew them out of curiosity, not to feed the fish as I was told there is little nutritional value in them once they are more than a few days old.
  21. Hi angie. I could not get your link to work. As far as I know there is no such thing as a true 'cold water guppy'. Guppies can live in cooler waters than a lot of tropicals so many say they can be kept in cold water. "Cold" refers to the average room temperature in a well insulated house. These are just guppies which have been raised in cooler temperatures. Have a look through the threads here talking about line breeding guppies. This is where you breed mothers to sons etc to get good colour strains. Incest seems to be desirable in guppies A heater is usually suggested for guppies and you will need a reasonable sized tank to breed them if you leave the fry in with them (but they usually get eaten) plus tanks for them to grow up in. Too small an area slows their growth. Depending on how many you plan to raise you can have a few, or many tanks.
  22. Grant and I will be there I gather Janey (unless you get us lost).
  23. Introducing a young male might make the older one try and prove he's still got it with the female, I did not suggest him as a mate!
  24. Between Hawkes Bay and the Blenheim sunshine coming up with us, Wellington should get a heatwave!
