  1. Microglanis iheringi; better known as South American Bumblebee Catfish PlanetCatfish ScotCat A top notch catfish, I still have one that I got about 8 years ago
  2. Hi everyone, I am technically not new here, but since I haven’t been for 4+ years I think posting here is warranted. I am a Masters geology student who is moving to Dunedin in a few months to start my thesis research at Otago. Unfortunately due to some staff retirements, staff moving elsewhere and no staff with expertise in what I am interested in, I have had to pull out of Canterbury Uni and relocate elsewhere. As for fish...when the Feb earthquake hit my main tank unfortunately got shaken off the secured base and toppled over onto the floor – was a complete mess with glass, gravel and fish everywhere. Thankfully I was home so could rescue them and only a few fish in my other (non-harmed) tank died - I’m guessing because they got too cold with no heating. Now I have a 3ft tank at my parent’s house with a Synodontis schoutedeni (yellow marble syno), Striped Raphael catfish, and a featherfin syno. In a 2ft tank I have a mix of tetras and a banjo catfish. I looked up this site as I know about a grand total of 4 people in Dunedin so am looking to meet new people, and I want to have a little planted tank (30L?) in my room when I find a place to live. And yes I will join the Dunedin club I am especially interested in hearing from anyone who lives in the Catlins region as that is where my field research will begin, but I know that is unlikely due to the population there. If you are an Otago student also please get in touch with me. I think that is all the bases covered
  3. Spearmint Cricket or rugby?
  4. A banjo will fine in your tank. I have 2 of them, and I see one about once a week, so be warned
  5. This catfish will grow more then 5'' if given enough time- they seem to live forever. I'd have a guess they would max out at about 8'' in captivity. And at that size they will eat small tankmates, eg neons.
  6. 2 featherfin synos 1 synodontis schoutedeni 3? upside down synos (Synodontis nigriventris) 4? Microsynodontis polli [i want more] 1 false bumblebee catfish (Pseudomystus stenomus) 2 banjo cats 1 South American bumblebee cat(Microglanis iheringi), [i want more] 2 BN 1 golden blackeye BN an unknown amount of kuhli loaches my catfish collection has decreased since the last time i posted since i passed my corys on
  7. I have one and he's awesome. I have him with slightly bigger fish like odessa barbs and black widows and a few larger catfish. The only fish he has spats with is my featherfin, but even then they are short lived and not particularly violent. You've made a good choice
  8. By from Africa do you mean the rift lakes? if so stick with a Bristlenose plec, anything else is risky to suicidal. Or if you mean a west african kind of tank you could always keep your eyes out for one of these http://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/phractura_ansorgii.htm but i think the chance of finding one of those in NZ is nigh on impossible....
  9. Raphael/chocolate catfish will eat smaller tankmates so you have good reason to suspect the catfish. As for feeding them...they eat almost anything! not very fussy at all, im sure that they will eat any pellets that you put in the tank.
  10. have you got a pic? i've never heard of anything like that
  11. Featherfin syno Synodontis schoutedeni 4 upside down synos (Synodontis nigriventris) 4 Mycrosynodontis polli False bumblebee catfish (Pseudomystus stenomus) 2 banjo cats 1 South American bumblebee cat(Microglanis iheringi) hoplo 2 BN 6 emerald corys as you can see i don't have a thing for plecs like most ppl here do P.S CatBrat: how big are your microsynodontis'? one of mine is growing really fast and is now way bigger than the others lol.
  12. I guess I was beaten to the link I was gonna post Anyway the only reason I don't have any of these guys is coz my tanks are too full, but they are really interesting cats. It's always good to see a post on catfish other than corys or plecs
  13. awesome birchir if only they didn't get so damn big lol
  14. very nice pic of a very nice syno. and just wondering, how much was he?
