Salt in aquariums.
Having never bought aquarium salts I can't tell you the differences. Some people like to use a little salt in their aquariums as a 'tonic' for the fish. Some fish prefer it. Mollies like a bit of salt and some livebearer breeders swear by it. Whether this is the same salt used in marine tanks I don't know, as I don't keep marines, but I doubt it. When I kept mollies, I just used plain table salt (non iodised). The amount used is very small (can't remember how much exactly. Check out 'How to Salt a Freshwater Aquarium' in the beginner section) as it was discussed there. Brackish tanks have a salinity halfway between fresh and marine. This is to simulate regions where fish live in the tidal areas of rivers where they meet the sea so salinity changes as the tide goes in and out.

Yay! Finally got some fish :D
Having goldfish in it would have helped but then as it sat empty for 2 weeks, what were the bacteria in the filter living on during this time? Many would have died off again. A tank will not cycle, or keep cycled, sitting empty with no fish in it.

How to take fish home?
I don't think looking after 4 killifish for 2 weeks is worth joining another club for

My 1.2 x 51cm x 46cm 10mm 280L tank was 2nd hand and $80. No lid though.

New Discus Set Up
Yeah - get a bigger tank  Any way of raising the water level so it can't be seen? It is just a personal preference of mine to not be able to see the water level (unless of course it is only half full as a paludarium) - especially if the floor or stand is slightly uneven

Yay! Finally got some fish :D
What size is the tank Gretal? Unless you are using an already established filter, hold off getting more fish for at least a month to give the tank a chance to cycle properly. Testing the ammonia and nitrate levels will tell you how the cycle is progressing. If the tank is newly set up you must make sure the algae eater is well fed as there will be nothing for it to graze on in a new tank.

Dunedin Annual Tank Parade
The Dunedin Aquarium and Pond Society are holding their annual Tank Parade on Saturday, August 27th. They hope to have at least 10 venues to visit. If anyone is interested in attending this, and wanting more details as to start time and place etc, please contact Denise at The Pet Warehouse (03 477 7340) or Brian (03 453 5480). Grant and I will be travelling down to this. I know it is a 10 hour drive for us but gives us a weekend away and we get to meet other hobbyists and catch up with those we met the previous visit. 8) We go down on the Friday and home on Sunday. Always great fun. Perhaps those of you in Dunedin who do not belong to the club, or those of you in Invercargill and surrounding areas, would like to participate. It is a great way to meet like-minded people, get lots of advice, see different fish and plants (and possibly cadge a few) plus get new aquascaping ideas and stuff. Contact Denise or Brian now!! (assuming you are reading this at a reasonable hour )

How to take fish home?
I often use those cooler bags to transport fish, they are ideal. Just took delivery of some today which had an overnight stay in their plastic bag (nicely double bagged too) then a 3 hour ferry trip in the boot (trunk) of a car. They have now been floated, equalised, then freed into a bare 50cm x 30 x 30 tank with a tight fitting lid (as required by killifish). All I have to do is keep them alive until Aug 26th when they will be rebagged for their 10 hour drive to Marty in Dunedin.

Conditioning a new filter
My apologies rnbo, I must start wearing my glasses when working at the computer

Conditioning a new filter
Something will be there after 3 days - but enough? Depends on the fish load I guess. I assumed he meant the whole new filter was running on the existing tank.

Conditioning a new filter
I like to give mine a couple of weeks to be sure. Would think 3 days wouldn't be long enough. Compromise and say 1 week 8)

New Discus Set Up
Very nice indeed. Love that central driftwood shape too.

Tell me a wee bit about yourself
I am going to make one for Jude and Ian when they visit on Friday Don't waste it on the kids! For those Weight Watchers - one Banoffi Pie, as per wine biscuit recipe, is approx 94.5 points!!! (It might actually be less, like only 90, as I worked out the points using Girl Guide biscuits which are higher in points I imagine than wine biscuits.
