There is alot of arguing about it but I have spoken with a breeder who had a female who had produced fry then when the male died, she changed sex to male and replaced him. Sisters are doing it for themselves! :lol:

It certainly can be a mission to catch fish. I recently helped some club members catch fish in their 6 and a half ft tank when they moved house (the 5th time they have had to move that tank!). Although the fish do lose their colour (often it can just be becuase they were in a light coloured bucket and trying to blend in with their surroundings) they quickly regain it again.

They can change sex actually. Not all males grow a long sword straight away. The males have a gonopodium. This is the long anal fin under the body. It is a long and pointed fin in males and short and rounded in females. Not only can the females change sex but they can store sperm for several months and have several batches of fry with no male present.

I too get oxygen weed out of the river that runs through the middle of my town.

I have quite a few tropicals over 8 years old and the bigger cichlids last many years. I could be smart and say 2 of your goldfish only lasted 4 months so 2 years for a small tropical is an improvement I prefer the tropicals for the movement. Goldfish tend to hang about whereas tropicals zip about (unless you have fish like Siamese fighters or discus of course) and are more colourful. Does the 2nd tank have a heaterstat? You will need one if you swap to tropicals.

I would. Perhaps it is too hot to get busy (if you get my drift ) If snails are few, squish them to death.

Ammolock will stuff up your test readings. I htink they will read higher if I remember correctly.

I would not expect the snails to have that much effect on wcmm unless your tank was totally over-run with them. It may be the warmer temps slowing down the fish breeding.

Filters are not actually a necessity. With a well balanced, heavily planted tank, low stocking levels, and regular maintenance (which most of us don't have) a filter is not required. It is recommended though, especially for newbies. Pumps also power under gravel filters, as Jude said, plus box and sponge filters. Air control valves are also used when you have several filters running off one pump. With different lengths of tubing they need the air regulated so all pump the right amount of air through. They can also be used to slow down the air flow if it is making the filter too noisy with too many bubbles coming through too fast. The kind of filter you have is personal but can also depend on the type of fish you have. Many fish like to dig in the substrate so you would not use an under gravel filter. Fish producing fry need a filter the fry won't get sucked up into. Fish who do not like strong currents (like discus, bubble nesters etc) also need gentler filtration whereas the ones who live in fast flowing streams need all the current they can get - and a powerhead would help there.
