  1. As some you might know, I am getting a new pond! 8) Boy am I stuffed! We have had to move 2 ponds, plus mussel float and fibreglass shell (daphnia breeding ponds), to make way for the digger which is coming through the fence (we will have to remove a bit of that as well). Step 1: Empty and move fibreglass shell. Easy since mostly empty due to evaporation in the heat. Decided mussell float is small enough to leave where it is. Step 2: Start emptying paddling pool (1.83cm x 38cm deep) and see how many golden barbs there are. We started with 19 when they went in around Christmastime. Odd, we caught - 19. Absolutely no fry at all! Perhaps they are all females or all males  Put golden barbs in bucket. Step 3: Finished emptying pool. Move carpet it was sitting on and pool round to end of garage and refill. Move all plants into it, plus those in goldfish round stock trough (1.2m x 40cm deep) Step 4: Empty round goldfish trough then catch 5 large goldfish and add to refilled paddling pool. Step 5: Move trough to end of garage beside paddling pool. Refill. Step 6: Catch goldfish and fry in old bath and add to refilled trough. Empty bath. Found 50 goldfish in there of varying sizes. Not bad since it started with 4 goldfish 2 years ago. Obviously better at breeding than golden barbs! Step 7: Realise golden barbs are still sitting in bucket and wonder where to put them. Step 8: Remove leopardfish from 92cm tank in lounge and move to 45cm tank in spare bedroom, empty except for spare plant. Only 2 of them so no need for filter to be added. Step 9: Throw 19 golden barbs into 92cm tank. Has Fluval 404 running on it so should pick up the slack soon. May have to do regular water changes until bacteria builds up in media Step 10: Clean up remaining mess ready for digger tomorrow. All this was after I went for an 8km, 5 mile, hike up the Wither hills in the morning, then biked 4km, 2.5 miles, into town to join 2 kids and my brother on a 5km, 3 mile fun bike along the river bank with the Mayor as part of a nationwide competition to find the most cycle-mad place in NZ (part of a get fit campaign). I then biked the 4km home again! I deserve an ice cream! Hokey pokey of course
  2. I have no idea as I have never used it on fish.

    WHAT CAN YOu DO

    They actually inject them
  5. A lot of meds you have to get for humans as little is here in the way of animal meds as far as I know. Erythromycin is available if you know a friendly Dr or chemist. AKA Eromycin and E-Mycin. Minocycline is too and may also be found under Minomycin or Minotabs. Again, human meds.
  6. Looking good kookie. Some of the plants will need moving as they grow though. I would suggest you move the heater down and left a bit (as you look at the tank) so hide it more. Heat rises too so the lower the heaterstat the better.
  7. They will not starve over 2 days. It does pay to let them settle a day or 2 before feeding though.

    WHAT CAN YOu DO

Dyeing fish and genetically modifying them are totally different things and I am not debating the pros and cons. Dyed fish are injected with dyes. It is painful for the fish and they do not live very long after having been injected.
  10. Welcome Rebecca. You sound very busy! What have you had success with, or failures, when fish breeding?
  11. I never managed to see the eggs they were so tiny and my eyesight isn't 20/20

  13. Since I am at work so have access to the information... Trichozole is metronidazole Flagyl is metronidazole plus sugar, ethanol & hydroxybenzoates You can also get metronidazole in an oil in water cream base for topical applications. It is called Rozex. Not sure if you can catch discus and apply a cream directly to the fish.
  14. So how long did the paperwork take? PS. I am sure yours looks bigger

    Sailfin Plecos

Quite a few fish don't breed in captivity because we cannot replicate their natural conditions.
  16. The change in food would have altered the ammonia etc levels too because there would be more waste and leftovers than when they had live food.
  17. As far as I know females will lay eggs whether there is a male in there or not. I just cleaned out my Malawi tank today (totally removed everything) and found 2 different sized spawnings of electric yellows but no Borleyi's. I suspect mine are all the same sex.

    dropsy?

I had a danio with dropsy last year. This was the first time I had seen dropsy in over 20 years of fishkeeping. Then, helping set up a new member with danios a couple of weeks ago, he had one get dropsy too! We both only had one fish affected but I believe it is contagious.

    Blind goldfish???

If it was blindness I would expect to see a change in the eyes. I too would wonder if he is actually not interested in eating for some reason.
  20. Caper we have artesian water here so no chlorine added 8) Not everyone elsewhere in NZ is so lucky.
  21. Welcome Vicki. Good luck with the seahorses.
  22. They will do so all by themselves with no effort from you. Fry will be very hard to see and will cling to the sides of the tank or plants. Shine a torch down from above and their eyes will reflect in the light.
