Guppies are able to deal with lower temperatures than most tropical fishes, as are some barbs (like rosys, golden etc) and other fish. They are fine in "cold" water if the temperature is not less than 18C. The average well insulated house in many parts of NZ would not get below this, hence the term "coldwater" means "in a well insulated house in a warm part of the country so you do not require a heaterstat" 8)

Old pantyhose are good to put peat in (as long as nobody is wearing them at the time). Choose a natural peat that has no additives. You can buy the sponges or use filter wool. I also like to put extra ceramic noodles in mine under the foam.

2 tubs outside. One for waterlogging large driftwood and the other for breeding critters for fishfood. Oh, plus half a mussel float for daphnia.

It would be preferable to put it in just the club section and maybe freshwater and saltwater too.

I never took any notice of how old mine were when they started to breed. They can be odd in that they may not breed for years then suddenly start to do so non stop until they stop again as suddenly, and mysteriously, as they began. They are not too territorial and you will not have a problem with several males in one tank. Of course, if you're wanting to breed them you will need females

Very simple. The males have long bristles around the mouth and up the middle of their head. The females have short bristles around the mouth.

Those little red ones are all over the place down the Kaikoura coast. They don't get much bigger and won't cope with water constantly over 16C.

I hate ornaments in tanks (terracotta pots for breeding don't count) and prefer the natural look in decor and colour. Also dislike unnatural colours in gravel - eg blue (no offence to those who like it, it is my personal opinion only) I like a tank with lots of smaller fish, like barbs and tetras, rather than a few large ones. Currently down to one tropical community with tetras, barbs, gouramis, hoplos and bristlenoses. -
