    questions

Which killie did you have in mind? Usually killies are kept in small killie only tanks and only one species of killie in each. Different killies live for different lengths of time but not as long as most other tropicals. If the tank is display only it won't matter what substrate you use. As long as there is a heavy planting providing shade you can have the lighting required for the plants yet still provide the shadowed areas for the fish. Run the spraybar just under the water level, enough to ripple the surface. A 403 in a 250L tank will not provide a massive amount of current anyway. Which orange coloured algae eater? I can't think of any orange ones. Different fish eat different algae and if your tank is set up correctly you will not need algae eaters. Good to have bottom feeders though. Any plants you like will suit. Do not have ammonia remover in the filter while the tank cycles. How are you planning to cycle it? Do not use carbon either.
  2. It is usual to join the nearest but not compulsory. A number belong to the NZ Killifish Association which is a postal club only with members nationwide. My own club (Marlborough) has had members from all over the country - often as they had no club close enough to join. Currently we have members in Taupo, Gisborne, Asbburton, Stoke and Texas USA 8)
  3. Boy, I thought I was going nuts for a while there but I was right!
  4. Peat is usually used in a bag to lower pH, not as a substrate. Not sure how you would keep it down and still enable the fish to dig. Perhaps some 'natural mud' from a stream would be helpful?
  5. Quite possibly me! I am at work but will re-check my letterheads when I get home. I could have sworn we were Aquatic

    Advice

How large will the tank be? Clowns prefer to be in groups of 3 or more.
  7. Guppies need a sex ratio of 1 male to every 2 or 3 females or they will harass the females to death. Female guppies are pretty much almost permanently pregnant and can drop new fry every 4 - 6 weeks. Nothing needs to be done except have a well planted tank with lots of fine floating plant for the fry to hide in. In a community tank the majority will be eaten anyway - which is good or you would very quickly be overrun with guppies
  8. Looking good but I would like to point out we are the Federation of NZ AQUATIC Societies, not aquarium
  9. I collect my weed from fast flowing areas so not sure what sort of parasites have ever been attached. never had a problem. I have to be careful the council hasn't recently sprayed the banks though
  10. They will always be stunted. Feeding when young is vital to good growth. Feed them up though and they will look very healthy - albeit smaller than they should be.
  11. Firtly, the goldfish will quickly outgrow that sized tank and in the meantime you will stunt their growth. I would like to suggest you keep the fantails in it and put the comets in a pond - a much more suitable environment for them. Comets need space to swim as they are quick and lively. The fantails are much slower and don't need so much room to swim. Goldfish nibble at all plants and some are worse than others for doing it. I collect oxygen weed from the local river as it is free and easily replenished. You might also try Java fern and water sprite although they will tug on the sprite endlessly then eat the exposed root - which kills off the rest of the plant  Just drop the lettuce in - wash it first to get rid of any pesticides which may be present.

  13. Some like to use it as a preventative 'tonic'. If you have a well maintained and balanced aquarium there is no need for such tonics. Salt is often used for a number of minor ailments. Tonic salt has a few added ingredients supposedly beneficial.
  14. Very easy. Biggest problem is keeping it cool over summer - well it is here anyway
  15. You get natural peat that has no fertilisers or mould inhibitors added.
  16. I'm no expert on dwarf gouramis but I would say you have one of each. I thought females were hard to come by.
  17. Or start them on a "Just say No!" campaign

  19. I have some spare if someone nearby doesn't offer any.
  20. Shops have stuff called Liquifry. Comes in two types for egg layers or live bearers. Wilson; to qualify as a breeding you need a minimum of 10 fry after 30 days free swimming.
  21. I have had BNs lying upsidedown at the surface while attached to a bit of floating cucumber
