  1. I buy "bright white" or "daylight" tubes from Mastertrade
  2. Do you know the age of the fish? They will fade, get a little ragged looking and get thin when old.
  3. Some lay eggs above the water line. Depends on the type of snail.
  4. My friend had the Canterbury mudfish on his farm. Officials got all excited for a while. They caught a lot to study but I think they all died  I think their habitat has now been destroyed.
  5. With ipod you pay for the brand. I have a Sandisk mp3 I have used for about 4 years now and it is great. It takes one little AAA battery which lasts for ages. I use rechargeables and always have fresh onhand as required. I just plug my player into the computer and copy and paste the songs from there. No sweat. Must be easy if I can do it
  6. They can be found in a lot of places. I believe you are allowed to have them but not pass them on to others. Not sure what the rules are these days

Hope you haven't put it in with the axolotl 8)

It isn't looking 100% but pale fish like that show up redder in areas than more coloured fishes.
  9. jn if you have yellow flag irises Iris pseudodacorus, they are a banned species.
  10. A dark spot appearing suggests to me possibly internal bleeding. I wonder if it is some sort of internal problem but don't know what to suggest to help. Not sure a fish can have a stroke as such. I know they are prone to tumours though.
  11. Caper until recently our secondary school years were called forms so you started college at the age of 12 or 13 in Form 3, next year Form 4 etc up to 7th Form. We now have Year 1, 2, 3 etc. Primary school 5 - 10 or 12 yrs (starting in the primers and making your way up to Standard 1, 2, 3 and 4) then Intermediate (sometimes part of primary school) ages 10 - 12 (and known as Form 1 and 2) Secondary 12 or 13 yrs - 17 or 18 yrs then university or other tertiary learning. Do you start college at Year 9 these days people? I don't have kids at school so aren't sure about the new system. :-?
  12. You mean you haven't hassled John for a holiday job?
  13. I would leave the second spawn to be eaten. If they have spawned twice they should do so again so don't worry about them until the original fry are big enough to survive in the main tank, or you have got rid of them.
  14. By "just upended itself" do you mean it died? If so, there could be any number of reasons. BNs are tropical and goldfish are cold. If the tank is unheated a temp drop overnight would have done it. The female may have been more susceptible due to having just laid eggs, being about to lay eggs, thinking about laying eggs etc etc etc.
  15. what plants would go good in a frog tank? Frog porridge  St John's wart
  16. Sorry RebeccaG but I don't think he's waving at you - he's waving at Shangsun
  17. When our tank cracked and flooded the place we thought we were covered as we had specifically asked if the tank was included. They said they would pay for the tank but not the damage as they only paid for water damage if it was caused by the 'normal' water supply - eg burst pipe, hot water cylinder etc. We tried to explain that, as we had 18 tanks at the time, aquarium water was 'normal' but they wouldn't buy it  They did pay out after telling us to get the most expensive quote we could for the tank. Didn't cover the cost of lifting, drying, and relaying the carpet but went a long way towards it.
  18. I understood chloramine in our water was only as a natural byproduct (if that's the word). Other countries actually add chloramines to the water but we don't in NZ, hence no need to get rid of it. Could be way off the mark though
  19. Mine is as it is already waterlogged so you don't have to wait for it to sink. A lot of the dry pieces are really really dry and some of them never sink.
  20. Geekery is more interesting than a woman's magazine any day!
  21. They refer to the big bleached dry wood above the tideline. Remove them and the rest of the place will blow away.
  22. It doesn't need to be a covered container but make sure the wood is totally underwater as it dries out fast. I keep spares in an old bathtub out the back. By the way - Ignore the signs telling you it is illegal to take driftwood from the beach
  23. Latest membership cards arrived today so our most recent members will find their magazines etc in the post tomorrow.
  24. Who knows where it is cheapest? Do some ringing or search the Net. May be some on Trademe at the moment. I got my Siporax at a fraction of the new cost when the Hawkes Bay Club had a lot to sell many years ago. No idea where my bag of Eheim stuff came from. I think it was given to me. Still half a bag left so handy to throw into internal filters as required. No price on it and i have no idea how old it is.
