  1. It depends on what they have been eating. Many fish seem to find tiger worms unpalatable but if they have been farmed and fed nice fresh foods then they seem to be tastier to the fish.
  2. Contracts to one company that contracts to others
  3. I am sure they will enjoy the added taste of mint and will have fresher breath. I only buy minted peas so my fish don't get plain ones I think the cat food would be ok as an occasional treat but the ratio of ingredients is different for cats than for fish so it is not as nutritionally good for them. It won't harm them but be careful as it may foul the water. If it is oily it may create a film on the surface so watch for that or make sure you have plenty of surface agitation. I have never kept an eel so I do not know what they eat. I doubt meat from your dinner would harm it. Have you tried earthworms?
  4. Funny you should say that David as he is considering re-joining the union. His job does not fit any specific category as it is wide ranging. He used to be called a radio technician, then they were told they were 'engineers'. Yesterday he was taught how to locate underground fibre optic cables and was then put in charge of a crew digging in the area. He had to make sure they did not dig up any cable (a very expensive exercise if fibre optics are damaged). He then discovered that not only was he to supervise, he actually had to dig too! Poor man has rheumatoid arthritis and turns 60 next month  He got home by 5pm for once (it is usually between 6pm and 9pm) and managed an evening at home before being called out at 11.30pm to a cell site south of Kaikoura to attend a mains fail alarm. Two hour drive there and back so got home at 4.30am then was up again at 6am to be back onsite digging again today :-? He is also in charge of building maintenance and probably knows as much as fully trained engineers on how to repair air conditioning units. On top of that he deals with all payphone faults in the area, microwave stations and cell sites in Nelson/Marlborough and installs satellite systems and internet connections plus a host of other stuff I don't understand. Oh, and fixes the radio communications between the taxis and ambulances etc. Those uni students who think they work hard need to spend a day on the job with Grant - then they would realise what hard work was! Last week was a short week as he only worked 63 hours and travelled 900km. That does not include the hours worked when he comes home when he works on computers as part of his own company we have above and beyond the other job!
  5. Thank you all for the kind words. It isn't just the cover that is no longer glossy, it is the whole book. The pages are actually thicker than before as all are 100gsm, not the usual 80gsm
  6. How can you tell what? That coral raises the pH? This is a known. It won't happen overnight (necessarily) but it will happen As an aside, I don't think coral looks right in a freshwater tank. It is a marine feature.
  7. So do you mind the not-glossy version? It is a lot cheaper than the glossy. :-?
  8. Remember advice can only be given based on the information given. Such information may, or may not, be accurate or complete (not inferring anything here Omaria, but speaking generally ) Someone might see a problem tank or fish "in the flesh" and note something else that the poster had not thought to mention. Note all suggestions then see which you think fits most closely to your specific problem and act accordingly. In this case there may be a combination of factors affecting the fish and so one or more people may all be right
  9. Easy to say but harder to do, especially when head office is in another city. He got a pay rise about 12 months ago but, despite numerous copmplaints, has yet to see the result show up in his pay packet! His is a hard job to fit any one criteria as he does so many things not in a prescribed single job description. He is also a sub contractor. He belonged to a union for many years but got disillusioned. Got talking to another subbie working for the same company, doing similar work, and discovered he gets $7,000 more than him but he has a vehicle supplied. We have our own and charge them running costs and a per km rate so get more that way. We wish to keep it this way too. Apart from finding someone in a similar job to talk to, how do you find out these days what the average pay rate is for a particular job?
  10. Does your method involve threats by animals with sharp teeth or beaks?
  11. Does anyone know where you can go to get someone to renegotiate your wages on your behalf, if you do not belong to a union? I gather some lawyers specialise in this but I wondered if there was some company that did it professionally on behalf of individuals. Bear in mind we do not live in a city
  12. When a fish is not 100% it is easy for it to get tired then sucked up against the filter. Neons are not hardy
  13. I would be bracing that stand before worrying about bracing the tank
  14. I have heard of the Chinese algae eaters doing this. I believe they like sucking the slime coat off the discus. I don't know if it is good for them though (the whiptail or the discus) :-?
  15. Has it done this from the beginning? It is possible it was damaged when being caught. This can happen. Also, did you say what sex the platys were? They need a sex ration of 1 male to 2 or more females. The one on the bottom may be a male being bullied by another male :-?

    Gold Fish

Has he considered an external filter? Goldfish produce a LOT of waste and I wonder if an internal like that would clog quite quickly.

    Hi from Nelson

Hi. Your other pets are welcome too We have other Nelsonians in here and some are also members of the Tasman Aquarium Club.
  18. But then you have to get people to read the stickies before they ask their question
  19. If fish are happy then leave the pH alone. Better to have a low or high stable pH than to add chemicals and have it swing. Chemicals only work for a short time anyway (depending on the reason the pH is too low) and it will quickly go back to what it was - hence the swing. There should be some nitrAte showing in a cycled tank 6 months old.
  20. I prefer the glossy look too but at $1.40 cheaper per mag I think we can cope 8) Might have to go back to me printing them in Nov anyway since the shop here closed
  21. Don't start that again! His was actually the first one bagged and tagged though. Jim I had to re-address yours by hand as I forgot tochange your address in the mail merge. Don't forget to send me your new one when it changes again I hope you all like the magazines as they are a bit different this time due to the different print process used.
  22. If you need to use dechlorinator you just add it when you fill the bucket. I use warm water from the tap using my hand to guess if it is about the right temperature. It isn't critical and you don't need to be exact. Congratulations on your 40th. I will be up to 33 this year I think. Have a look through the various sections listed here for answers to many of your pH, cycling and test kit questions.
