  1. The board too or did the tank slide off the board?
  2. Thanks bdspider. I think the type of ground houses were on had a big effect too as those with liquefaction had more problems.
  3. As a result of the weekend quake in ChCh, I have been reading up on info regarding how to quake proof your tank. Many suggest bolting or strapping the tank and stand to a wall or floor but a structural engineer said he didn't recommend anchoring them to the wall or floor... let them move with everything else. Worst thing is that you will have some water slosh around if the quake is of reasonable size. The higher up you are in a building - the more movement you can expect - e.g. a person living on the 3rd floor will experience greater movement during the same quake than someone living a few floors down. The dynamics of an earthquake are so varying, strapping anything to a wall isn't going to make a difference. It was also suggesting attaching them to a wall would tend to cause more structural damage than actually save the tank and/or stand from toppling. Would those who have pics of their damaged tanks, or water mess, please email them to me for use in an article I hope to write for the next AW? If your tank fell over... Why? (I don't mean you to reply "because of the earthquake" either  ). Was it higher than it was wide? How big was it? Was it a tank and stand combo or a tank sitting on a dresser or something? Did some of your tanks break but not others? Do you know why? What direction were they facing (the quake ran west to east)? Anything else you can think of that would increase our knowledge of what happens in a large quake.
  4. I will start another thread for this
  5. and were toppled tanks higher than they were wide so more top heavy? I have been looking at info re quake-proofing tanks and it has been interesting. Hope to create an article. Those with pics of their broken tanks, or the damage from sloshing water, please email them to me
  6. If you want to learn more about us Pastafarians, livingart, go to the website of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster I had to look up "snakebites" too. Piercings of any sort make me shudder :-?
  7. Whistling? Perhaps it is happy To me it suggests air escaping somewhere. Have you checked the O rings and seals are all correctly positioned? I would have thought it would be water escaping though, not air :-?
  8. I had to look up Google to find out what a ds was
  9. Some of us have problems as zxcvbnm,. bits hit the vbnm,. keyboard
  10. Any of the live bearers - guppies, platys. Cherry barbs would look nice too. Danios are hardy though they like length to swim in as they zip about.
  11. What makes you think wcmm only live 2 years? They live a lot longer than that - or should. They are a good fish in that they seem to thrive in tropical or cold water.
  12. I gather he didn't notice you and your fiancee standing starkers in the doorway either?
  13. Get the biggest you can afford (a tank wider than it is high is best) as bigger tanks are easier to look after than smaller ones. In a small tank things can go wrong very quickly in the smaller volume whereas a bigger tank can give you time to notice something is wrong and correct it before it gets bad enough to kill any fish.
  14. Check the thread in off topic and you will see some have had losses of both fish and tanks
  15. Fish and tanks are easier to replace than people
  16. This is the best dancing dog I have ever seen! http://www.stuff.co.nz/oddstuff/4092924 ... ouTube-hit
  17. Was just talking to Gareth via Skype and they had 3 aftershocks while we were talking. He is a little nervous :-? No serious damage at his place though, except for household breakages which are insured. One of the cats as reappeared but 1 is still missing
  18. What about your 2 tanks on the computer desk? They didn't slosh on anything electrical I hope? Been thinking of you all down there and was really worried about Donna.
  19. Dennis if you really think they are dramatising too much, check out the pics in burrowssj link or look on Stuff.
  20. Not mine as he is here, not there They will be dramatising, as they do, but there is a lot of damage to the CBD. Check out the pics on Stuff. Gareth, at Belfast, said they just got power back on too. Thanks to all those people who, instead of staying at home to help their own families, head out to restore power, order, water etc to the masses.
  21. School on Saturday?? All cell sites have lost power. Generators are being taken in from all over to run the sites until mains power in restored.
  22. I don't like to ring her in case she is busy cleaning up. If she only has cordless phones and no power she won't be able to answer anyway!
  23. Add posts to the other thread please now please so we keep it all together. I never have anything above my bed, like pictures, because of quakes.
