  2. Ben palmer, he is on the facebook. He breeds a few different hybrids
  3. I have three cats, all indoor. The main reason is, so they don't get run over (we lost our last cat to a guy who swerved to hit him, we saw him do it) . Our three are perfectly adjusted and socialise perfectly well with visitors. The key is to have stuff to entertain them so they aren't bored. In Europe they are regularly house bound.
  4. Yu ever get a chance to photograph marine?

    Macro aglae

Hi all. I am looking at different options for macro aglae and trying to find one or two that will fit the wants of my tank. I am particularly interested in the following and most importantly are they available in NZ? If so, does anyone have some for sale Maiden's Hair Plant (Chlorodesmis sp.). Link : http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=490+659&pcatid=659 Neomeris annulata http://marineplantbook.com/marinebookneomeris.htm Caulerpa Serrulata http://marineplantbook.com/marinebookserrulata.htm I am also looking for a 'vallisneria' looking plant which is used in the Freshwater tanks. The reason for the taller plant, is that I will eventually get some seahorses. If I can find something similar, it will be perfect for tail anchoring. 12. I have decided to setup a marine tank. I keep African cichlids but I am quite tired of trying to find good bloodlines. Yes, there are some very good lines here but compared to the variety overseas, NZ is just too limiting and what people claim can be a quite interesting as well. Even when good bloodlines make it into the country, trying to locate them is :an!gry, if you are not lucky or quick enough to get them. For me a prime example is, I have spent 5 months trying to hunt out some Neolamprologus ocellatus, and the only ones I have found are at a pet store for $60 each. To get a breeding pair I would have to spend in the region of $300-600 dallors. To be honest I would rather setup a marine tank, if I am going to spend that type of money on a fish two years ago which was $20 each or fry sold on here for $5. Rant over! I am going to get a 600 litre tank (1200x700x700) and a 200 litre sump (900x600x400) built. I am looking at a Deltec SC 1455 Internal protein skimmer. Deltec say that it is suitable for a tank up to 1000 litres. I am at going down the path of a coral reef tank with the odd fish and quite a few inverts for a year or two. Once I am feel I am ready, I will look at getting seahorses, this is the ultimate goal. Yes, I realise I am going to have to be very careful about what corals to select and what inverts as well. I have heard of crabs eating seahorses I know that deltec skimmers are a very well regarded brand. I don't want to have to upgrade to another skimmer when I decide to get the seahorses. Would the SC1455 be suitable for what I am planning in the long run or should I look at getting the next size up? What type of lighting unit do peopple recommend for a 700mm deep tank? I would like to use either T5HO or LEDS. Within reason, price is not a problem. I will just have to save up my pennys, just means It will delay getting the tank setup. I live in Wellington. Where is the best place to obtain live rock from in the wellington region? What do people recommend as a good substrate for a coral reef tank, ? I realise this will probably be a personal preference thing but if people have a really good reason to go for a particular substrate I would like to know their reasoning. Thanks Malcolm
  13. spiral shaped to a point. Look like those malaysian trumpet snails but not 100%
  14. I have tried trapping the #%^& and even brought some YOyo's, which kind of worked (they controlled the population up to a certain density). However I am $^(%^$& sick of snails and it is time for them to die. Going down the chemical path now! :an!gry :an!gry Who recommends what?

    hybrids...

Hi all I am a fist time caller and been listening to your show for years. Personally, when I first began keeping cichlids I thought that all hybrids were arse (hope that word does not set the forum police onto me). Down here in wellington, we have enough problems with poor quailty cichlids swimming around without some clown mixing the bloodlines further. I only get my fry from certain people now or from the pet store when it is claimed to be from imported stock. Besides the people I trust, I always ask for photos of the parents (to determind is the fish actually look like they are supposed to)- no photos, no buy. I actually research each fry group I now buy. This is to ensure I can get as pure 'natural' strain. Over time my mind has been changing. There are some great looking hybrids that are beginning to turning up. I will probably end up buying a strain or two of these hybrids over the next couple of years, they can really make your tank 'pop'. However, all fry that are produced in my tank will be killed. I will breed my fish only in seperate breeding tanks. This is not possible for me as I only have one tank. That way I would be able ensure that what I am breeding are pure and I am not one of them @%#%$@ that dilutes the strains (natural or hybrid) and then claim them to a pure strain. :sage: Personally, If I had the time, money, finances, oh and brains I would attempt to breed a green african. Not sure if this is even possible and is simply a whim of fancy but would love to have a neon green african.
  16. Ok complete noob when it comes to taking pics of my fish or tank and when I have tried they look terrible. I have a cannon digital camera which is about 5-6 years old now. I have seen plenty of awesome photos and wouldn't mind playing around and trying to get some myself but have no idea of what I am doing. Are there any specfic settings I should set my camera too? ie shutter speed, colour setting or whatever Lighting tricks? Any hints? Any suggestions on a decent but not too expensive camera, if mine is not up to the bussiness. Thanks Malcolm
