  1. If you get the right plants you can have them in a african fish tank I have africans and plants. I have three types of anubias, three types of java and a crypt species. the narrow and normal java get grazed by my Tropheus duboisi but other wise plants are doing OK :happy2: I will post some pics of tank later. It might give you some ideas of what you do or do not like.
  2. I have some calcite sand/gravel spare if you want some it's a form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). There is about 1/4 to 1/2 a green recycle bins worth. Happily trade for any Glossostigma elatinoides, Hygrophila salicifolia, Myriophyllum, tiger lotus. Which I could pick up in 4-5 months time.
  3. Anyone built one here and how please.
  4. I would like some recommendations for a quiet filter for a 60x35x35 tank (approximately 90 liters). It will be a freshwater tank with hopefully Pseudomugil gertrudae in it. This tank with be in my study so needs to be quiet.

I feel your pain. I lost my alto calvus yellow (5 of them) about 8-10 months ago. Spray wand fell in the tank (I didn't notice until too late :tears: ) and they became oxygen starved and died. I am still gutted to this day!

  16. I understand this and in some cases it is for good reason. However, if the rules are followed and the species met the requirements then the fish should be added to the list. Not all species will get on the list just because we want them to be. The two major factors that should be looked at before time and money is spent on a fish species is: to actually talk to the suppliers to or in NZ, to see what is available on the open market and the retail cost of it once it is here. These should be the deciding factors on what species are looked at. If people wish to pursue less likely or expensive fish that is their choice. Personally I am looking to this as a challenge: Can some of the desired fish actually get on the list. "Better to try and fail, than never try at all." As mentioned before, I am happy to do the donkey work for any dwarf African cichlid species and if it happens to be a species I would like to see in the country I will even throw some money into the pot for it.
  17. I am happy to volunteer money and time to work on any of the dwarf african cichlids

  21. I knew you would answe first P44 Cheers for info, having a look now.
  22. 1 )What species of crypts if any can survive and grow in my dwarf african cichlid tank. It has a pH of just over 8 and a hardness of about 300. 2) Are any of them smaller low going ones? I have some type of low growing crypt in my tank (not sure if it is stunted due to the tanks environment, seems to be growing but seems to take ages to grow and divide.) have no idea which one. I would like something similar.
  23. I have about five different tanganyikan species together. However I do have them in a 6ft tank. I have worked out it is about cospecific aggression and having enough of each species to combat that, where you put your hidding areas and staying away from the real bullies of the cichlid world. I also started off having mine as fry so they all grew up together. In my tank I have a mixture of rock and wood with narrrow leafed, windlow and normal java fern, plus anubias species (A-town, I hope you read this and remember to find me more of the different anubias species ). Quite a few of the cichlids have made the plants home and the smaller ones hid in it for protection. My 5 shellies which also live with the larger cichlids and have about 70 shells to choose from, which have been spread thoughout the tank to help with aggression. As ryan mentioned above, before you buy, do a little research on the species you want and see if they are work together, or work out ways to help them settle in with each other.
  24. Whens the November met? I am actually going to try and get up there
