  1. I like duckweed but it's presence will make harvesting bugs a labourious process.

Cooper has a broken leg? need more poochie photos!
  3. In my 80 litre bugs pond there is a blanket weed that will not leave. I have tried using barley straw (real not extract) but it didn't seem to do anything, in fact after it had started to break down I found the blanket weed liked to grow through it instead :slfg: At the moment what I do to get rid of it is put my hands in every couple of weeks and pull it out which disturbs the bottom layer of mulm and clouds the water for a couple of days and is not ideal. I don't want to put any chemical additives in as I don't want to change the water chemistry in such a way as to kill the bugs. There are lots of daphnia, snails and mosquito larvae in there. There is no pond pump or such like. Will the addition of plants help it go away? What would be recommended? (A water lily would be too big.) There is a rather spindly oxygen weed of about 4 strands growing in a container of stones - should it be in soil? this is when I had first started it - now the inside edges are green
  4. I wouldn't have thought lack of sunshine would be an issue in Africa or am I making an obviously ignorant comment? I have heard that story about old england where kids in orphanages with rickets were being given oranges to suck on for Vitamin C :dunno:
  5. I find that in the shops they stay still quite a lot or hang out sucking the gravel so you have to have a hard look sometimes. Last time I went looking for one I couldn't see them either so I stopped looking in the tanks and started reading the tank labels instead :slfg:

until I win lotto I will not be spending $35 on a fish unless it's a real gold fish :slfg:
  12. In my loach tank I have a layer of rounded gravel around the edges where the plants are and then the sand poured over the top. I felt that the roots had more chance of moving about in gravel and sand compared to plain sand, and it seems that the plants get started a little quicker too. There are also JBL balls and root tabs mixed in. Plain sand worked alright too as long as the plant roots were pretty sturdy to start with. The smaller ones didn't do well in plain sand.
  13. The rules ACTUALLY are - all drivers of all vehicles, and pedestrians must give way to me.......... get out of my way.... coming through!!!

  18. so anyway .... make yourself a cup of tea :cofn: ... After all this I acquired a male and female gardneri nigerianus gold killifish. Knowing that they were not young fish I thought I'd give it a go anyway. After a week or 2 the male died from unknown issues. (see kilifish with fungus thread) A week or 2 after that the female stopped eating and started acting a little strange from time to time - occasional flashing, shaking her a head, yawning her mouth, staying near the filter almost all the time .... apparently seeing and being a little interested in food but not really going for it. Her outer body was fine and she was otherwise moving about in a healthy fashion. I thought maybe she had an internal parasite or that she was sick from something else unknown as I knew that her 2 male cousins from the previous same tank were also suffering/dying. I thought it possible she was weak because she was pining for company :dunno: Left back in the old tank there was one male left, a humpback male and pretty large. He was eating fine and acting normal. Since there were now 1 male and 1 female left we decided I would take the humpback to live with the female and they could either die together and at least have company or hope for the best and they perk up. So about a week ago I brought him home to live with his new/old missus, dosed the tank with aviverm (I had forgotten I had it  ) and now about 5 or so days later after a water change the female has started eating again and hanging out in the food area when I come near. :bounce:
  19. :gigl: fish don't earn an income
  20. if you find this to be true then you have never lived with not enough money - have you never had to sell something to pay for something else? You are a lucky guy :sml2:
