  1. I miss the ChCh water. I remember the first shower I had here. I thought I was in a swimming pool the smell of chlorine was that bad. Frenchy
  2. What will giving the tank a big clean out do Wilson? Gravel vac is always good, removes dirt, debris any parasite eggs... just leave the syphon out in the sun to dry for a couple of days. If you are using medicines, use for full course of treatment too. Frenchy
  3. I have been meaning to add something new to my white calvus for a little while now. At Brads the other day & I saw some nice Cyprichromis leptosoma "Mpulunga". That will do, grabbed 12 today. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/c_leptosoma.php http://www.volny.cz/aq_pro/images/jpg/jpg3/Cyprichromis_leptosoma_Mpulungu.jpg http://www.destin-tanganyika.net/images/cyprichromis-leptosoma-2.jpg They are in with assorted fry at the moment. Let them settle etc before adding to the whites. Above is what they will look like when bigger. Still only youngens at the moment. Frenchy
  4. I was going to add to why Malawis & Tangs might not mix, but the link added by Johannes Visser covered it very well. I have some mixed tanks. There are some tips & tricks too with certain combinations. & some I will never try, oh & some I did that didn't work. Have to consider how fish breed too. Egg layers will want an area while raising fry.... Frenchy
  5. If you google the common name of the fish & add or start with cichlid, you should be able to find information. Frenchy
  6. For a little while. Deoends on tank mates & how good the parents are. You should be able to seperate the fry out yourself into a seperate tank if the fry are free swimming. Frenchy
  7. Very nice pics & congrats on the fry. Frenchy
  8. Praziquantel is in some anti parasite remedies. Just a case of going to a lfs & readying what the main ingredient is on parasite remedy bottles. If you can't find that then Trichlorifon is next best option in my opinion. The other medicine I would try is Metronidazole{Flagyl} this is what discus people use when their fish have stringy poo. These medicines are good against internal & external worms. Frenchy
  9. What type of filter do have currently in the tank? As above most fish need oxygen, but you should be able to set up your existing filters so the top of the water surface is broken. Frenchy
  10. Hmmm, how big are all these fish & how long do you expect them to live in that together for? :-? Frenchy
  11. Could be a few things. Have a look at the options on this link. You should be able to narrow it down. Good Luck. http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/fecal_disorders.html I guess C. Frenchy
  12. & humans too  oh There isn't much bacteria in water at all. Be better using a filter or some gravel form the old tank, to help speed up the process. Then again, it could be better than nothing  Frenchy
  13. There still can be as Tim Tam said. I have had a tank seal leak. Started up one day, turned the filters off it stopped, started the tank up again it started again. If the leak is low down, gravel can pack into the seal too, stopping the leak. {so I have been told} Frenchy
  14. Yep as said above. Used to have a breeding pair in a display tank in the first lfs I worked at. No way was I putting my hand in that tank  As for what they are like, my mate had an American set up. A breeding pair of convicts were defending their babies against others. A jaguar was that keen for the babies & the convict mum was that keen to defend. The convict mum was in the Jaguar mouths when my mate got home from work. jag wasn't that big & the convict only just fitted in the mouth. Oh mate mate managed too get the female convict out & she survived. She hadn't been in there to long, plenty of scratches that was about it. Frenchy
  15. As Billaney said. Just feed the fish in the new tank every 2nd day too. The less the fed, waste etc the slower the water will spike. Frenchy
  16. Your calculations are a little off. If you worked out protein to be 9.6% then on the same principle fat is 4.8%. Thanks Alan. Opps, my bad too. I should of typed microworms. Don't know how I wrote whiteworms. I have used microworms, that is why I went, goody. Will edit now. Frenchy
  17. Doing some research on another matter & came across some material that answers some questions previously raised on some sources of food. Earthworms... http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/FA016 Microworms... http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/FA022 Finally an answer to how much protein..... Not bad aye? If I find more, will post up later. Frenchy
  18. Funny thing is the ahli are the uglier ones of the two too. Frenchy
  19. All ended up good then. Well better than what it could of been. Frenchy
  20. Nah, its the 9 fronnies, they are worth more than a house  Frenchy
  21. If you do regular water changes, then when you do your next change, strip 1/2 the tank down. Should be able to catch her then. Alot of African Cichlids don't eat or much when holding. That is why alot of people will keep females away from males for 1-2 weeks after she spat the fry, to condition back up. Frenchy
  22. In this case there is a big difference between what he bought them as & what they really are. He is only selling them under the name of which he bought them as. I really don't think some people know how rare ahli are. Funny when you google ahli, most are wrong. As I said, importers are very slack on this one. I dare someone to put his pick up on an USA forum, ie; cichlid forum. I bet you can't prove me wrong. Frenchy
  23. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Fish/auction-90653848.htm Good to see some one tried to inform Shame about the result  Someone should link him to the cichlid forum. Adding the person who made the fryeri comment is right, ahli so rare, only a handful exist in USA, non in Aussie & ahli are dull too. Not your fault mate, just importers & wholesalers stuff up, wrongly named, quite common. I am not a member. Had somene point it out to me. Frenchy
  24. Hey Brad, who is puddles. Matt or Luke? There are plenty of times your brother flooded one part of the shop or another. You would off missed out on plenty. He had the dry out shop routine down pat. Towels, fans, open doors, air con.... In my casual days I often walked into the shop to the sound of squish squish as I walked. If one of them 2 above is puddles, then Steve is "Lake Skippy" As for me, my worst is that I have had a 4 footer split. 4-5 years ago. 4 footer in bedroom, got home form work. Tank was completely empty. Had a breeding pair of comps & calvus in there plus a couple of dithers. The sole fish that survived was a calvus female. She was still in her shell, the water emptying out of the tank turned her shell upwards enough to hold enough water for her to live in, what must of been a couple of hours. Glad she didn't jump out Have had a 6 footer, leak since. In garage & caught early. Lisa rang me at work, small leak, dripping slowly. I told her to turn everything off, keep me updated. She rang back, as soon as water settled after filters were off, the leak stopped. Got home from work later, started the filters up, leak started again. Frenchy
  25. If it is the air tube, I have a longer piece on mine & just bend it so it is in the water at night. Pull it out of the water in the morning. No bubbles at night, bubbles during the day. Make sure the internal is high up in the tank so the surface of the water gets some agitation at night. Joys is resting fish at night, don't take up much oxygen. Frenchy
