  1. Sigh. Had an ammonia spike in our discus breeding tank. The sponge filter we are using had been cycled in our community tank for over a month. And left in the new tank for over a week before adding 2x discus. We have been doing 10% water change every day. Adding Cycle as required per water change. (However we didn't add the initial bulk amount) Ammonia levels have gone up to 1. We have done 50% water change, and that brought it down to 0.5 We have added the necessary amounts of cycle for the 'initial' tank cycle as directed on the bottle. Any suggestions what we can do to get it back to 0?
  2. They have a big Oscar at Hollywood Fish Farm Mt Roskil, when ever i walk past the tank its slowly follows me. Funny.
  3. Is our water to soft for our community tank? Tank kH = 3drop x 10 = 30ppm x 0.056 = 1.68 degrees Tank gH = 3drop x 20 = 60ppm x 0.056 = 3.36 degrees Tank PH = 6.4 Fish: Discus, Siamese alge eaters, Cardinal tetras, Rummy Nose tetras, Blue/Gold Ram If so, should i buy some crushed oyster shell to put in my filter? Theres some cheap on trade me.
  4. Yea this is defiantly the case with ours. Ive tried letting the male take care of the eggs, but about an hour ago he ate them. So i guess next round ill try the female. If they both eat them ill have to get some gutter guard or something to cover the breeding cone.
  5. Hey i wasn't meaning for you to pick from the list, i just listed my favorites Am interested to know yours!
  6. Which fish do you think has the best personality? Our picks: 1. Clown Loach 2. Discus 3. Platty 4. Female Siamese Fighter
  7. Ive bought some nice replica ADA gear off ebay. Good quality and fairly priced.
  8. An update: They have laid eggs again, had to remove the female since they where fighting so much, and I'm yet to get separators. The male seems to be a better parent anyway. Obvesouly it will be optimal to have them both in the same tank with the separator. My GH and KH levels from my tap water seem great for breeding. Here are my numbers: Tank kH = 1drop x 10 = 10ppm x 0.056 = 0.56 degrees Tank gH = 3drop x 20 = 60ppm x 0.056 = 3.36 degrees They have laid eggs 7 times now. Yet to get wrigglers since 6 times was in a community tank and ended up providing a nice snack for a few residents. So hopefully in a few days... !
  9. Excellent. Ill come in tomorrow.
  10. Hi David, i have tried them, they no longer stock it.
  11. HFF don't sell it anymore. However they do have coral rack that clips together. I would have to buy 8x racks to get the size i need however. I might do this unless anyone else has any better solutions? cheers
  12. thanks for fast replies. ill check it out
  13. Hi there, I live in Auckland. Im looking for egg crate separators for my discus tank, our discus pair have laid eggs but fight a lot over them. To the point that they are doing some serious damage to one another. I have searched this forum and found many requests on where to buy this, all the places recommended no longer stock this item. Does anyone know any place in Auckland that still stocks egg crate? I need a sheet around 400mm x 500mm Thanks.
  14. Hello again! Well, we decided to buy a proper stand for the tank. Got it at the Animates sale. Here is a photo (sorry for poor quality, again, iPhone 3 camera is not fun) The sponge filter is well cycled now, been in my main tank for around a month. The couple are loving the new tank

    very cool! what a pimp
  16. We got some Discus Fish Dinner frozen food from Animates during the weekend, Our discus totally ignore it. They don't even look at it. Also, it doesn't seem to break up under water, just sits there in a cube. I know its got some good ingredients so I'm pretty disappointed.
  17. I was kind of worried about this... i will be setting the tank up and monitoring it long before i put any fish in it. Can anyone suggest a better stand option? Something thats not gonna cost me a fortune? Cheers Edit: i have tested this by standing on the middle of the stand, i weigh 80kg, and i would imagine the tank will be at least 120kg. With me standing on it, there is a small amount of 'sag', i will monitor it though, if it does crack, its not going to 'expload' is it? Id have time to move the fish and get a new stand? Cheers
  18. Glass is 6mm, yea i know the 300W can heat a huge tank, however my apartment is extremely cold, average temp around 12 degrees lol. I was going to get 200W heater, but the 300W is only $4 more or so. So i thought why not. It will turn off when it reaches the correct temp. Probably be off for longer than a smaller heater, saving power
  19. And today they laid their second sett of eggs!
  20. Its 550 wide, 500 tall, 400 deep. Had to go 400 deep because that's the max depth of the stand.
