  1. All the fry are back on the parents Will be getting a white nylon stocking just in case for next time.
  2. Hi, the discus fry all attached to the parents fine from day one. It's only now on day three that they have gone to the filter. Will they be ok feeding off the filter?
  3. Hello, Need some help here, Seems the discus fry (free swimmers 3 days old) are attaching to the bottom of the sponge filter instead of the parent. Is this ok? what should i do? Remove the sponge filter? Wont that be bad for water quality? Thanks

    Wrigglers!

An update: Day 3 of free swimmers, All seems to be going good! However tonight the fry seem to be hiding under the sponge filter. Ill probably wake up in the morning and they will be back on the parents and fine, just wondering if this is normal behavior? We turned off the night light for a bit and they have come out from under the filter, i was under the impression a dim light needed to be on for them to find the parent? Could they be hiding from the light?

I was planning on doing water changes every day around 25% even with fry in the tank (at this stage, 1 day free swimming). Should i not be doing this?

From what ive been reading, i should be introducing brine shrimp after 5 days of free swimming as a supplement, and remove the parents at the latest 14 days after free swimming, and then full diet brine shrimp 4-6 times per day.

At the moment, the fry are spread between the male and female, the pair are still separated with the egg crate, the fry seem to be finding there way through it fine. Looks like the female has become annoyed with the fry, shes dumped them in a corner of the tank. The male is putting up with it for now lol

Yea have been doing that. Hey the Female is doing something odd. She keeps throwing the babies off every once in a while and moving away from them, is this normal?

Should i be putting cycle in with water changes? Will it harm the babies?

    Wrigglers!

I just attempted a poo clean up. Only sucked up 2 fry, i then used a flash light to search the bucket for them, then got them in a net and put them back into the tank. Discus Daddy was not happy with the large plastic tube coming near his babies lol >.>
  11. They can be very funny. My discus as soon as i open my bedroom door in the morning they go absolutely crazy, swimming up and down as if so happy to see me. But i know they just want food lol. If i touch any container that slightly resembles the red topped tetra color bits, they also go into a craze. Its pretty funny. They always swim up to the observer and bow.

At this stage im kind of freaking out about water changes, it looks like its going to be impossible to suck up the poo without sucking up some fry, they are kind of everywhere lol. Any tips on this? Im thinking about just changing water and not sucking up waste until the fry are a little bigger...

How long till the wrigglers become free swimming? Ive read different facts from different places. Some say 12 hours, some say 72hours some say 1 week.

I am going to try leaving both parents in the tank. I do want them to both try raise the young, but I'm yet to see if the male eats them. So i will just have to wait and see! Should happen in the next 5 hours or less.

Thanks for the tips! Any advice on water changes at this stage? Should i be removing the poo or just changing the water?

    Wrigglers!

Wrigglers! Yay! All thanks to the egg crate separator and a very patient discus Mum. One question, water changes from here on out, should i be getting the poo out, or just changing water? I seems it might be difficult to no suck up fry?

  21. I have found males with females can be bad, some females might nip the male or vise versa. Even some females get agro at other females, but its not common. We've had tanks with lots of females together. Female fighters have a great personality, awesome fish. Males to, but i find them to difficult to keep.

    Ammonia Spike..

Hello, Thanks for the responses, the ph is at 6, so if your saying its not as harmful, i guess ill just do 50% fresh warm change every day till its gone. Im thinking of getting an external canister filter for the tank + use the sponge filter, and as its a breeding tank, id turn off the canister if they breed. Hopefully by then the sponge has some good bacteria growth. I would change the water every 2-3 days with both filters running, and every day when just the sponge is running. - does this sound ok?

    Ammonia Spike..

Water parameters from our community tank are exactly the same aside from the ammonia problem. So in this case looks like it should be good. Ill just do another 50% change using the other tank water. Cheers

    Ammonia Spike..

Hi, no don't have any spare filter wool from the main filter. I want to know if doing another 50% water change using water from community tank would be a good idea. As i really don't want to leave them in a tank with 0.5 ammonia overnight until next water change. thanks

    Ammonia Spike..

Im thinking about doing another 50% water change, but use new water from the community tank which has 0 ammonia, and is well cycled with similar ph,kh,gh. Would this be changing to much water in one day?
