  1. What size heater do you need? Ive got an almost new Jebo 150W with heater guard that you can have for free. Also got half a bottle of flourish and excel too to get you started. Also a canister filter is recommened for various reasons: Less clutter in the tank = more space for plants Can be setup to create no surface movement like Hang ons (keeps CO2 in the water) I have Eheim 2224's on special for just $220 at the moment 8) Gimme a buzz, im not upto much today.

    Tank too hot!

I have a strange problem... My 450L is simply too hot. Even after a 200L cold water change yesterday, temp only went down to 28C. Heater is a 300w Jager and is turned right down. This morning tank was 29.2C, unplugged heater all day so far and tank is sitting at 29.5C Tried throwing in bottles of frozen water, Ice cubes etc. Tank is in the garage which is the coolest room in the house (though still warm) and ive tried leaving doors open etc... I am running an FX5 and an AC70 Powerhead so plenty of turnover and surface movement. I cant remove the lids as I have bichirs that will escape out of the smallest of gaps... Its only going to get worse as summer warms up... Any ideas? I know the current temp isnt a huge issue, but I dont like not being in control of it... I could have a fine mesh rather than tank lids?
  3. PH drops overnight due to carbon dioxide levels increasing overnight... thats if you have plants though, they absorb CO2 whilst photosynthesising during the day, and stop at night, so more CO2 = lower ph.
  4. Animates have them. Boys and girls.
  5. Nearly all the redundancies that happened at the company that I recently left just happened to all be people that didnt see eye-to-eye with the directors... I was actually hoping to get made redundant... an extra months pay hehe, but I left anyway. Key thing: dont panic. take your time and evaluate options, but dont jump to 100% conclusions until anything is confirmed.
  6. I hate to say it, but expect the worst On the other hand, you could be in for a promotion? hows the company doing in general?
  7. Albino beunos aires tetras. cheaper, cooler, and get a bit bigger than congo's
  8. That looks gross! But cool
  9. The Nutrafin C02 systems are good. I have two in stock if you want to have a nosey at them. If you buy the angels small you should be okay to go with a huge mass of neons (like 20, looks awesome in a planted tank) Id always recommend just one species of shoaling fish, and get more of them. Looks far better IMO. A group of cories will work too, nice and active during the day, quite fun to watch AND they go ok with BN's. As for plants, grab a six pack and come over and we can go through the plant bible and the suppliers lists and choose what you like that is available 8) Oh and one last thing, make sure you still have decent access to the tank when its on the bookshelf. With a planted tank you will find you will have your hands in it quite a bit until you are happy with it, replanted, moving everything etc as they grow, as well as for trimming and pruning
  10. That would have to be done on a weekly basis of course...
  11. A huge pile of polypterus senegalus?

    PH Dilemma

Peat granules lower the ph, as does driftwood, as does CO2. Do not use chemicals to alter your water permanently. I agree with Ryan. Test your carbonate hardness, and why chase a ph? majority of fish can live quite happily at a ph of 6-8, so long as its stable...

    New Tank

Tigers will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. The other problem with keeping them with say oscars, is that tigers will maybe grow only an inch or two per year - even if power fed, whearas the oscar will grow from 0 to 8 inches in that time, so youll end up with a big turd with wings bullying your nice expensive little tigers, so theyll be unstable and youll never see them As long as you take the stance that the oscar is disposable and if it comes to that you move him on and replace with a new baby one it will be fine The other wild card is the black shark - im a huge fan of them, but they a) get huge (2ft potentially) and b) and one of the most vicious fish you can get. Im sure Ira will be along soon to tell us about her shark Other than that, awesome tank, you have lots of options! Aro Aro Aro Aro Aro
  14. Not big enough for an aro! Tank is only 4 ft long! but its 2 deep and 2 high, so could for dats for a while!
  15. In any job, especially retail, youll always get a mixture of people - some who dont get paid alot and dont really give a damn, and some who have passion and knowledge for product. As was mentioned before, Animates staff are trained in all areas - fish, dogs, cats, birds and small animals - of course its extremely rare for someone to have owned everything and hence have that much more experience over some training. Youll get someone serving you in the fish room, and you may think they are 'useless' but when it comes to dogs for example, you might find them really impressive. If you know more about fish than the person serving you, thats nothing to be annoyed about really, just means you should be proud of the knowledge you possess
  16. Indeed, but only looking to have one large centre piece in the tank
  17. Give me a yell if there is anything you are after and I can check the lists
  18. All out of stock. At least at the 3 big suppliers ive been hounding for a whole week...
  19. Just got one of the latest plant lists today, Anubias Barteri is on it :bounce: Wondering whether to persevere with what I have... or get the barteri... mmm
  20. This comment aimed at no-one in particular: Im of the opinion that it shouldnt matter how much the fish cost unless they are $80+fish. Unless you keep exotic/rare/expensive fish, the livestock is usually the cheapest part of the hobby... if you are arguing about a few bucks on that, you really shouldnt be keeping fish as where are the dollars going to come from for the important stuff - decent equipment etc.. Understandable that some people dont have huge pots of cash for fishkeeping - but its all relative regardless of whether its a tiny 100l tank or a monster 800l tank.
  21. Fraser do you want my AT? $90 Hes about 4''
