    PH ??????

Duh duh duh! algae rid? i havent read the full label on the algae rid products, but perhaps there is a warning not to use with soft water as it will cause a ph crash due to insufficient buffer... Also dont use KH up, once again it is just temporarily chemically altering your water, and everytime you change some, youll need to adjust again. buy a whole bag of crushed oyster shell and either put it in your tank or filter, put enough in to bring your KH readings up to about 3 degrees and you should be fine.
  2. Or ditch the cichlid for puffers :bounce:
  3. lol will have a look on the lists... Ive only got royals at the moment
  4. Tiger barbs are notorious for requiring high oxygen levels. I discovered this when I put 5 into a 20L holding tank overnight prior to someone picking them up - the next morning they were all belly up. I then added a venturi valve to the internal filter (so more oxygenation) and kept 7 barbs in the same tank for a week with no problems. Especially in a planted tank where you restrict your surface movement for the benefit of the plants (and plants dont supply a huge amount of oxygen contrary to mass opinion)... I would recommend creating a lot more surface movement, and worst case scenario is that your plants growth might reduce. Hope this helps
  5. Looking good Hey you forgot to grab that heater I have. And I have your sunnies too.
  6. Greg at tanks2u. Ill pm you his email address. Measure it up, and ask him for a price.
  7. Nah getting the tank made would cost about $20-30 im sure
  8. Anyone thought about modding one of these? I think it would be a great idea to switch out all the bottom compartments and just have one big compartment, either for actual breeding, or for a bigger swimming area to use on a rostered basis
  9. Is it one of the aquaone tanks? Those are stunning units
  10. They usually have a section in the back for a heater.

    Tank too hot!

I used to have a big fancy thermometer with a range of thermocouples at work, never thought about using it on the tank

    Tank too hot!

Im not that hasty! Although there are 2 thermometers that are reading very close compared to the other one, and they match the thermostat better, whats not to say the aquaminder is correct, and everything else is wrong, huh? But using the extremely accurate arm dip test method, I can say it isnt 28. My arm goes in 60 tanks per day and 28-30 feels noticeably warm compared to 26 which feels luke-warm. But yes facepalm. Rather annoyed that a $60 thermometer is far less accurate than >$10 ones... Just as well i didnt pay $60 for it then

    Tank too hot!

Since my last post I had 3 thermometers of different varieties in the tank, in the same area. Cheapo Digital: 24.9 Hagen Aquaminder: 28.2 Aquaone Glass: 26 Doh.

    Tank too hot!

Its not the heater, its been running for 2 weeks. Before that I had a 300W Jebo and had the same problem, hence replaced the heater. Ill go throw 2 other different thermometers in the tank and see what they read also
  15. So how ya gonna fit a lawnmower in there?
  16. Whats hydrofolia then? Its stuck in my head for some reason  Zev there is only barteri, HAStifolia and nana on the lists at the moment. Ill let yas know how good the barteri is when I get it.
  17. Was thinking that. The barteri will be mounted in a little nest like area in the top of my driftwood, whearas the hydrofolia is mounted at the base of my piece of driftwood. Will post a pic when I have the barteri to show what I mean. On a better note, I just managed to split a nice sized baby of my anubias nana

    Tank too hot!

Yep. heater thermostats arent the most accurate of things, even in good water flow, and even a Jager. At the moment, if i set it to anything above 22C it turns on straight away - I cant even calibrate it that low now either
  19. Awesome! I bit the bullet and cut all the emersed leaves yesterday. Now im just left with a golf-ball-sized rhizome. Im getting a Barteri this week, so may ditch the hydrofolia maybe... or make it a work project.

    Tank too hot!

Nah its a brand new Jager. I think the heater actually hadnt needed to turn on at all for the last few days... Boarding of the small window helped a lot! May still make up some mesh lids though just in case it gets hotter in the midst of summer.
  21. How much is the bulb worth? if its like $20 id personally just try it and see what happens... if its a $50 bulb on the other hand Id be cautious.

    Tank too hot!

equipment in the tank doesnt generate a lot of heat. Thermometer is digital via a probe inside the tank. Therer is a narrow (10'' wide) window behind the tank which ive now boarded off to prevent that heat source. Tank is a 4x2x2 so its pretty chunky and will hold temperature very well (as ive found!) Got it down to 28 this morning just by unplugging the heater overnight.
