  1. you know, there seems to be a few people lately with guppys going way overdue. My golden guppy went 6-7 weeks before birthing and she too was huge. She didn't lose colour but was mouthing a lot like she was looking for food. When she finally did have some fry ,they were very big and only about 14 came out and she is still huge. That was two weeks ago and she looks like she could pop at any moment. One thing I have noticed.. is my due guppies give birth within hours of a water change. ... soemtimes even during! Did my weekly water change today , and afterwards found two more newborn fry , so they might be hers .
  2. the offer is there Sam if you get stuck.. Just PM me.
  3. furan-2 it's not cheap but is "effective against gram positive and gram negative organisms" teh active ingredients are furazolidone, nitrofurazone and meth blue. Seems to be a broad spectrum systematic antibiotic.. will get in their system and not just treat surface infection. It turns the water yellowish green .. and it did leave slight staining on my silicone but barely noticeable.
  4. Sam.. what about Furan? has petpac got some more in yet?? Otherwise I have 6 capsules you can borrow.. just replace when you can as I like to have some on standbye. I also have some clove oil if you're desperate. Where abouts in Manukau are you? I'm in wattle Downs, Manurewa.
  5. hmm, I have an AR-380 but I'm not that clever with aquascaping.. and I have an artificial mountain in there I'm rather fond of.. not a lot of room left for pretty plants. lol. Just got an Indian fern.
  6. i've used 1/4 t salt per litre with plants and they've been ok. I read somewhere that salt toleration of most plants is around 1000mg/L which is a bit less than 1/4 t
  7. can toxic algae grow in our home aqauriums?
  8. oh .. i thought 3D was a still image while 4D showed movement..
  9. i have a female fighter in with my guppies- no problems. I just added 2 platy in with my male fighter and he spent about an hr flaring at them , then I fed him and he forgot he was chasing them lol. now they are ignoring each other. I was at a petshop in rotorua and saw a tank of guppies only and they had lots of torn tails.
  10. I started with guppy in my AR380 , and a bristlenose of course!

    Platy spitting

I put the platy into the tank about half hr ago. The betta in there has spent the whole time following them and flaring.. I hope he doesn't attack them! Looks like I'll be spending the rest of the day watching them .. i don't want to go too far from the tank now.
  14. I bought one pack , and got another free. But i don't have a whole heap of fish or feed bloodworms every night. I feed 1/2 - one cube about once a week, the night before a water change .. because they're messier than dry foods. The fish that eat them are two betta, 5 guppies, two platy. Possibly the whiptail and 3 Kuhli get some leftovers. The packs are going to last for ages at this rate so I was wondering how long they will keep frozen.
  15. I have a blue planet tank Those replacement media packs are expensive so instead I bought a big bag of filter wool and a box of filter carbon. I chuck out the carbon every few weeks and just rinse the wool. I don't think you need as much carbon as what is in those packs either. I only replace the wool when it's looking too gunky .. about every 8 weeks.
  16. OK you other newbies.. join the fun!

    Platy spitting

I bought two platy from a LFS and they have been in quarantine for just over 3 weeks now. But both of them are spitting flakes out and then eating all the smaller bits as the flakes fall apart when they spit them out. I wondered if they had gill flukes and have treated twice with Prazi as per following method: 1.25ml for 20 L tank. Filter cartridge removed, just wool in the filter. 24 hours in darkness, 30% water change (no gravel in tank) carbon added next day another 30% water change and filter cartridge replaced (has some carbon in it as well) then another 20% water change the day after that. Repeated 10 days later. Neither of them stopped spitting after any of the treatments. The male spits most of the time, the female some of the time. I was planning on putting in the main tank this weekend, but the spitting bothers me .. do they have flukes or is this a fussy platy thing? They are otherwise looking good, very active and zippy (wow they can move fast) advice appreciated.

    beware

why don't you believe him Dixon? I've read on his posts here (this site) that he has an importers license and I've seen his huge fishroom and he told me in person he has imported a lot of fish from the wild.. i have no reason to doubt him as he's been breeding and growing fish for a long time and is certainly no novice.

I saw some in Rotorua as well. They were mostly black seahorses.

    Boxfish

I'm not really up with my marine species but I was in a petstore in Rotorua in the weekend and saw a fish in their saltwater section that i can only describe as looking like a floating box! I just googled some images and I'm sure it's the same .. minus the spots. It caught my attention because of how unusual it was.
