I've heard that some meds do decrease the oxygen available so an airstone is a good idea, especially if you've also raised the temperature. Does wunder tonic have some meth blue in it? because furan-2 also has that.

i have always very lightly cooked carrot and pumpkin for my BNs .. they love pumpkin but weren't fussed on carrot. Still not sure if my Black whiptail is eating.. I notice he moves around a bit more in the late evening so maybe he eats when I'm not looking...I gave him some bloodworms earlier today but he didn't seem to notice they were there.

might have to rope hubby into helping me if I attempt something like that! Just as well I didn't buy the little guy I saw today. My daughters teacher had one in a splish splash with hang on filter but he seemd to do OK, despite the smallish size.
-
thanks... i did a bit of a google search also.. maybe this one I might need to save for another tank one day... i have plenty in my minds eye.. a big community tank... a smaller bumblebee goby tank..and my latest wants are dwarf pufferfish and Borneo suckers... will have to research what can go with what! Oh dear.. can see our new lounge filling up with tanks!
-
i use my hand and/or a small container to catch my BNs. Then I can look at him more closley in the container.

I'm not sure if it's a catfish or loach so sorry if this is int he wrong section. I saw a Borneo Sucker in a LFS this morning and was very tempted to buy it but sticking to my rule of never buying on a whim I need to do some research first. What I need to know, is what size tank and conditions . I was thinking of putting it into my 22L tank and even though this little guy is small my tank is probably too small too. It has a betta and small whiptail in it. There is enough current that it bends the plants and creates visible bubbles but not too much that it annoys the beta.. who likes playing in the current anyway! I also have a 34 L tank but this pretty much has it's limit on fish now. What can you tell em about the borneo ... wrong fish for my setup or will I be ok?

Split from Aqua Fun Day - Gender issues!
BikBok replied to Adrienne's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
that's ok Lyndy! I've come to the conclusion that fishkeeping is a male dominated hobby! My default assumption is "male" unless the name is obviously otherwise. BikBok is a derivative nickname of Rebecca... haha work that one out! And I know at least one other Rebecca with a user name of Bikbok too! (on TM) A gender icon would be good .. make it optional for those that want to stay incognito! It's funny when you're talking to someone and you get the impression they a a certain gender.. when you find out it's the opposite, it can throw you for a second. -
Drontal, Droncit, Praziquantel, Adtape & Gill flukes

That's similar to the dosage I used on my guppy tank. A Betta breeder gave me some liquid Prazi and said about 5ml for 80L which is what I used. 24 hours, no light... large water change and gravel vacuum. And I repeated again a few days later. No fish losses due to treatment.. This was post losing a guppy to worms so the treatment was a precaution but i haven't had any problems with them since. I must say, I have Kuhli in the same tank and they didn't like it one bit.. they came out and lay motionless for 20 minutes before scuttling away again.. but have also been fine. In my case I wouldn't want to increase the dosage . -
yes a heater will speed up the life cycle of the whitespot organism so it can be dealt with more quickly and more effectively . And your fish will be happier too in a warmer tank. After treatment you could probably turn it slowly back down to 24-25oC

I'm guessing that those levles of Chlorine are a fairly decent amount. (fully chlorinated) here's the other info I recieved.. not sure what is relevant or not, i've taken out some such as cyanide, arsenic, barium, boron etc... typical analysis of Manukau Water 2008 . MAV is Maxiumum allowable value first figure is the avg result.. 2nd figure is the MAV avg MAV GV Nitrite Nitrogen 0.002 0.21 or 32 mg/L N Nitrate Nitrogen 0.21 50 mg/L N Nitrogen 0.21 <1 mg/L Aluminium 0.024 0.1 mg/L mg/L Copper 0.0006 2 1 mg/L mg/L Iron 0.012 0.2 mg/L Mercury 0.00016 0.002 mg/L Lead 0.00023 0.01 mg/L Zinc 0.0026 1.5 mg/L Bromodichloromethane 0.015 0.06 mg/L Bromoform 0.002 0.01 mg/L Chloroform 0.018 0.2 mg/L Dibromochloromethane 0.01 0.15 mg/L THM Ratio 0.326 Total Dissolved Solids 95 Sulphate 15.3 Sodium 12 Calcium Hardness 32 Magnesium hardness 7.8 Total Hardness 39.5 Magnesium 1.9 Calcium 12.7 Now if anyone clever wants to interpret this and what it means for the fishies... go right ahead!! sorry.. i get to about half way and the page keeps jumping up.. making it diiffiuclt to redface the first firgures on the rest of the table. I got a reply from Manukau water with LOTS of readings taken from a sampling point one street over from wherer I live in Wattle Downs. (manukau) . I imagine the readings will be similar for other areas of Manukau. the blue text is mine so if I've got the name wrong.. send me back to 7th from chemistry at high school lol. If it's blank I haven't a clue what it is ! edit.. info on next post as this didn't display properly .. date of sample was 15.06.09

I'm new to fishkeeping but that seems like a lot of fish in a short time for that sized tank. In my 22L I have just two fish. I wonder if you could put the mussel in a bucket while you treat the tank
-
thanks for that twinkles. so I'm on the wrong track trying to feed him veges lol! OK.. will try the shrimp pellets again and decaps until, i can get some frozen bloodworms.
-
how do you feed them the decaps ? Do you just let its settle to the bottom? I feed my guppy fry decaps and not much makes it to the bottom, what the guppys don't eat gets sucked up the filter. Yes they are black whiptails (not sure why "black" though lol.) fresh bloodworm or dried? My betta gobbles up the dry ones.. again.. i don't think any would make it down to where the whiptail currently resides. I googled whiptail diet and got conflicting info from lots of protein to no meaty protein! No-one seems to know anything about the black whiptail diet and I wasn't sure if they ate the same as other whiptails.. so it's good to hear from another black whiptail owner. Did you get yours from Phil also?

whoops I meant fluoride. Manukau water supply has fluoride added . (sigh) Thanks for the informative post alanmin. Manukau water has fwd my email onto the "appropriate team" so hopefully someone will get back to me about my questions and then I'll post the answers here.
-
I'll jump in and wait for replies also. I've only had my whiptail for 4 days and he hasn't moved away form the plant he likes. I have no idea if he's eating or not ! I've given tropical flakes (his breeder fed them that) , zucchini, peas, shrimp pellets... haven't seen him go near any yet. He's a cool little guy though, looks like a twig! He's one of Phils "rare" ones. My Bristlenose loves pumpkin more than anything else so i might try lightly cooked pumpkin next.
-
thanks whetu I always run my tap in the mornings anyway.. before I put on the coffee or refill the cats and birds drinking bowls and before any waterchange.

Alanmin How much of a problem are monochloramines in NZ? From what I understand , monochloramines are a chloramine that form between free available chlorine AND ammonia. Free available chlorine levels vary between supplies and range form "chlorinated supply" which is low level ... being less than 0.2g/L at pH8.0 and "Fully chlorinated" which is higher than 0.2g/L at pH 8.0 I got those figures from Drinking water standards for New Zealand The maximum allowable value of monochloramine for drinking water in NZ is 3mg/L In USA the EPA std for monochloramine in drinking water is 4mg/L as they more commonly use it as their disinfectant. It seems the free available chlorine is an important factor here.. I have emailed watercare Manukau for information on FAC and chloramine levels and will post back if I find anything out. What about fluorine? is that OK for fish? I also googled the affect of chloramines on fish .. and in levels as low as 1ppm (mg/L) fish can experience oxygen deprivation after it enters their bloodstream and reacts with their hemoglobin,.. and alanmin is correct.. it does not evaporate out or boil out.. has to be chemically neutralised.

wow that first pic looks like a beach scene.. awesome!

I'm in Manukau but i use stress coat or water conditioner to be on the safe side. pH is on the high side which is a real nuisance. Why don't you email Manukau water and ask them for a typical analysis of their water... I asked them about pH and they confirmed it can be as high as 8+ I didn't think to ask about their chlorine levels. If you find out, post it back here.

i think adodge used a solder iron for hers.
