  1. poor thing . When I see how much my bettas enjoy their tank and swim around the plants investigating everything , it makes me sad seeing the petshop bettas sitting at the bottom of little cubicles motionless and looking dejected.

    gemini!

i wanna wagtail I wanna wagtail ** throws a little tantrum because I haven't found any yet**
  4. I had a red ramshorn in my goldfish tank for several months, it seemed to do ok.. now he's in the tropical tank .
  5. lol.. do you work at animates? I got the info on my aqua fun postcard that came today
  6. ok.. animates have half priced test kits this weekend.. I just need a nitrite test as I have everything else.. what's the best brand? (I'm currenlty using JBL and nutrafin(hagen))
  7. our Lutino is called Sunny... that would be a good weather name to go with Lightning!
  8. I use TLC too and it's great. But JBL filter start is what I just used on my last tank .. it's been going 8 weeks now and not even a hint of ammonia.
  9. wow.. that would be a big time commitment and you'll have to parrot proof your home! Good luck, i love macaws but could never own one. Have to stick with my gentle natured cockatiel!
  10. He's moving around more today and is swishing his tail again. Still got the blisters but after 8 days is still alive so hopefully will make a recovery . How long can I keep him in the hospital tank before I need to add a piece of driftwood. I'd rather not remove the one from hsi usual tank but can't find anything small and smooth enough for the hospital tank.
  11. ok, well two out of the three heaters have now settled down. I did rinse them all before use.. but clearly not enough... and yes they are Aq-1's ! I've also noticed a little bit on the silicone sealing but wiped it off and it didn't return. Is it possible it could have made my BN sick.. he kept hanging around in it .?

    Sore Betta?

The BEST thing to syphon small amounts of muck is a turkey baster! I bought one form a supermarket , washed it thoroughly in hot water and use it to syphon any small amounts of muck i see in the tank such as uneaten food, plant leaves etc. Works great and it's easy!! no sucking on tubing and only small amount of water to deal with.
  14. thanks Zev.. I've been calling her my golden girl and right now she is so huge I can't see how she can last another day without birthing!!
  15. can someone tell me what colour this female guppy is: hmmm , orange.. I feel teh same way about Platy .. i want some red wagtails NOT orange but everyone has orange! i will keep waiting till some turn up!
  16. wow there are some big numbers there! My Golden guppy girl is ready for her first drop - she looks like she's going to burst and I can see the babies inside her. The father guppy is most likely a snakeskin so hope i get some nice ones. (though I'm not going to try and actively save them ! such is life when the spare tank is being used as a hospital tank already) whatever survive hungry parents and a female betta will be the strong oens lol. Two managed to survive form my last lot (tuxedo parents) and they're both girls haha.
  17. i did wonder about that possibility. But he's not eating , so clearly no happy which is why I think he might have an infection. He's had the blister(s) for at least a week now and has not eaten during that time :-( I had a quick look at planetcatfish but seemed a little bit difficult to navigate for specific info on medicating a bristlenose! The only other medicine I have is acriflavine but i read somewhere that BNs don't tolerate that very well.
  18. I took some photos I tried to get a better one of him out of the water, but the bubble didn't show up at all! but you can see how it's holding his fin out from his body. I'm also worried he's going to die if starvation.. how does his weight look?
  19. yes it does look a bit like that... but under his fins not his bum. I'll try and get a pic later...
  20. I have mentioned this in another thread (slime on heater) but thought i might get more help here. I have a young bristlenose and he has developed a blister/bubble protruding out from underneath his pectoral fin. It just looks like an air filled bubble , maybe it has clear fluid inside, I'm not sure. Under the bubble where his skin is, it is pale white. He's hard to get a good look at but there might be another smaller one under his other fin. The big one certainly looks uncomfortable and I think he has stopped eating. I have put him into a hospital tank and am treating with furan 2.. today is day 4 and still no improvement. Not sure what I should do for him next .. I'm almost tempted to pop the bubble with a sterilised needle and leave him in the furan-2 an extra day. Any ideas? From everything I've read, the most likely cause seemed to be bacterial but the furan isn't helping. He doesn't move around much.
  21. southerngirl the general consensus seems to be that this occurs with new suction cups.. which mine are.. they are all between 1 - 10 weeks old.
  22. Yes, Furan-2 , i took out the filter cartridge and just put plain wool in there. Once meds are complete I will do a big water change and put new media in there with more filter start bacteria. Furan-2 packaging says it won't harm the filter but if it's broad spectrum antibiotic I can't see how it won't harm it! Anyway, I guess I will have to start the cycling process all over again. The poor littler BN is going to have to help me with this until he's better. When I started the hospital tank it was with a view to Quarantine some platy from a LFS because I'm wary of adding livebearers straight into my tank after being sold a worm infested guppy from a LFS. Then the BN got sick so he got put in there instead. No-one seems to have red wagtails anyway! N
  23. there are plants in the two main tanks but not the hospital tank. I started off with tank water but then saw the little BN with a blister/bubble under his fin and thought better of it in case there was something wrong with the water. Seeing as most of the good bacteria resided in the filter media itself and on surfaces I decided to start with fresh clean water.. add filter start bacteria and feed it fish flakes for a few days. Then I put the BN in there and he is currently being dosed with Furan2 which was recommended to me by a LFS. Incidentally , this is day 4 and the blister is still there.. it looks full of air or perhaps clear fluid and is bulging out from under his fin. . Is it something I should attempt to "pop" with a sterilised needle ... or should I just leave him be and see what happens.
  24. glad I'm not alone.. must be par for the course with new heaters. Weird.
  25. well I will keep persevering with wiping it away, and hopefully it will just disappear. I wonder what it actually is. I did google initially but didn't turn up anything useful, but will try again with "new heater" added to the search.
