  1. thye're very cute dashing around like little bees.. way cuter than baby guppies! My tank is too small to keep them so I need to find them a new home .. i might put them on TM but wondering if it's too soon...
  2. Does anyone know of a online growth chart for platy fry? Just wondering how quickly they'll grow and what age would be suitable to rehome them. The parents are red/orange wagtails , what can I expect the babies to be? So far at 10 days they all have black or mostly black tails and fins. And some look more red than the others and some have patchy blotches of black over their body too... does this mean I'll have all sorts or will they eventually colour up as red wagtails. Sorry for the terrible and tiny photo but here is a pic of the three i could get on camera...
  3. by the end of the first week you can generally detect the gravid spot in females.
  4. my female guppy pigs eat anything in sight ...the golden one particularly will gobble hunks of the freeze dried tubifex.. so I have to break it up first or I'm sure she'll choke! My female betta also samples everything , maybe I've just got gutso fish!
  5. i keep a bristlebnose and 3 kuhli for my cleanup crew. But they also get their own sinking food every 2nd day and the BN loves vege once or twice a week. The BN eats most algae and I also have a couple of snails (trumpet for the gravel, ramshorn for the glass and plants) to get the rest.
  6. how do you get around the Manukau chlorinated water? do you let it sit overnight?
  7. welcome maxdog.. search the forums and you'll see I was singing your praises just a few days ago ! :-)
  8. when I first got my betta he had never seen pellets but after a few days he realised they were food and now gobbles them up. he also likes frozen bloodworms and I'll be growing mozzie larvae summer for him. He has two platy in his tank and I thought he would be good population control.. but he hasn't caught a single fry! (if anyone wants 6 platy fry - let me know! they're my daughters and she would like a dollar or two for all of them)
  9. blue circle white spot cure. White spot is the same as Ich.
  10. that's what I thought too.. but I'm just new at all this. I do recall reading somewhere that a fancy guppy are just the ones bred colourfully for pet/breeder and show ownership as against one's you'd find wild.
  11. cream cheese lemon icing for me!!!
  12. is that right! Maybe it's not so bad after all then.. though he does like taking vids too. Very odd that there's no still camera!
  13. I rang DSE but it's outside the 14 day change of mind policy - it was worth a try though. nevermind. Lesson learnt: don't buy technology gifts too early!
  14. i had enough trouble gettign the measurement right for an 18 L volume! It would be good if Furan capsules came in smaller dose rates as well.
  15. i thought about that.. but there's HEAPS on there I'd be lucky to come out with $200 and then there's fees. I paid $229 and would be happy to get $ 200 for it .. but then by the time fees came out the diff between that and the new one would be too great. I also sell on EZYauctionz which is free to sell but not many buyers. I got to think this through and act fast if I do want to put it on TM. It's would have bee worth the extra $30 but not sure I want to pay an extra $80+.
  16. ahh! I recently bought a brand new 8GB iPod Nano only to find out there were new ones released today for about $30 more that have cameras!! aggghh... my son would have loved the one with the camera as he's always stealing my camera!! agghh!!!! It's to be his Christmas present but now I'm kicking myself I didn't wait a bit longer- trust me for being so organised lol !
  17. yes I was very worried for it. The lady who feeds the fish said she didn't know what happened to it. The maintenance guy must have takne it away. It was just a little one that hid most of the time behind the fake Val at the back. The library is quite warm, but you're right -- not warm enough at night. Up to recently the tank has looked quite clean and the fish in good health, but not anymore. There's slimy stuff floating at the top too.
  18. we have a goldfish tank at school. I noticed a bristlenose in it one day and puzzled over why it was in there because I couldn't see any heating. It's a tank maintained by some outside agency. Anyway, not long after that I noticed it was gone. Then last week most of the goldfish were been removed.. and the two remaining have whitespot and cloudy eyes!! The guy is supposed to be coming back to collect the other two... poor things.
  19. I like ristlenoses too :-) and Kuhli are great in the clean up team as well but you need 3+ of them.
  20. oops , my post at the top of this page was not meant to cause a stir.. I didn't name names, but I will say the "third" one is Not a nationwide store at all. I guess I was comparing to the great service I got from the store I mentioned on the previous page. I also know of LFS staff on these forums and I know that they have a genuine passion and are open to learning more - and that's the difference, staff that care- you do get a feeling fairly quick when visiting a LFS /LPS
  21. is wattle particularly bad for hayfever causing pollen? becuase I live in WATTLE downs and am surrounded by wattle trees and pine trees!
  22. every morning i have a sheet of pollen over my car - yes it does get everywhere and yes I do suffer from hayfever.. it's a terrible time!
  23. one is "That store" one has tanks that look unclean and staff barely speak to you the other always seem to have sick fish, grumpy staff can't answer simple questions and ask my children (who are almost teens and sensible) not to come in without an adult ! (has a sign on door saying "no children"). They won't allow prams , pushchairs and has denied access to even wheelchaired adullts! (there is actually room though it is small) Their birds are caged with barely anything in there.. bored cockatiels anyone? The pets are anything but happy.
  24. no I haven't seen their big tank out back but I knew they had one. I saw their tank full of tiny baby Jack Dempsey's and they told me they brought them in from their big tank. I didn't think their fish prices were too bad but depends what you're comparing it too I suppose, some were dearer than elsewhere. Overall I think their prices are reasonable.. it was good timing when they opened fincity because that's when I was setting up my tanks.. huge savings :-) ! Their fish range has most things that are needed and they can order in stuff that they don't have Have to agree that plant range is lacking! Fincity section of their petstore is newish so still building it up I guess, I never really took notice of their fish stuff before then as I mainly went in for bird and cat supplies - good prices for those. I like the feel of the shop, so I suppose that's why I go there. Not that impressed with other local petstores.
