  1. Hi Amy, If its a hard ray in the dorsal or anal area it will not grow or grow back. If its one of the soft rays it could be just shipping damage and can grow back It sounds to me to be a birth deformity and should of been culled, both fish. It is quite common for this deformity, missing hard rays in these areas,as are short gill plates
  2. Good luck! hatch time is very much dependent on temperature I keep my tanks at 27-28° and they hatch between 55 - 60 hrs
  3. HaHa good stuff! once one starts laying it tends to get the others going too Its quite common for it to happen like this
  4. Giant Flora is just a trade name They are just Red turks with the gene for growing large, high body They will stunt like any other discus if they are not cared for I saw a tank full of Flora's at Chins before he left for Aus
  5. Wow nice pairing Bets they won't succeed in the community tank As for raising Discus I remove waste 3 times a day,and replace water 100% per day It is very time consuming Whats more its hard to see some deformities until they get to an inch or so You can end up culling a high % if not the whole batch after caring for a month or two There seems to be a higher rate of deformities amongst the fry than what there use to be Weak genetics or bacteria,it is very frustrating
  6. Beautiful tank Rod,looks very clean too If the eggs don't all fungus over and go on to hatch,it is very difficult to raise them in the community tank If they have a good bond they will spawn again on a weekly basis, dependent on water quality Let them spawn a few times in the community tank to improve this bond and to see if you get wrigglers so you know you have a pair Then you can move them to there own tank and see how they get on Good luck!
  7. Shouldn't be Luke,White diamond is just another name for a snow white which came from the brown discus, its not pigeon based
  8. I understand what you were getting at Caryl and know that the waste levels can affect the fish being introduced but in general these fish aren't going down fast, its quite slow. They tend to waste away over a number of months,I have a blue diamond guppy that I had isolated for 2 months with no improvements. When I decided to treat them for nematodes as alot of them were looking sick I threw him back in with the rest and treated him too.No improvements at all.The only time I lost the guppies overnight was when I first introduced the moscow blue which is where I am basicly pointing the blame at.This was an imported guppy.
  9. I did check nitrates just recently because of what was happening, which was very low but in general I don't check water parameters as I do daily water changes on fry and 50% every 2 to 3 days on adults. My guppies get nearly the same care that I give my discus which is daily changes and therefore I don't see the need to check regularly for water problems.
  10. My problem seems to be if I introduce new stock, generally males are the ones I am adding. They start out with nice big flowing tails, but within a week or two, there tails have all but disappeared and there bodies are now skinny, they still eat but don't put on any weight. Some tend to hang around the top of the tank, some on the bottom, they can be in this condition for months. The original guppies all seem to be fine I have kept the guppies apart for months, basicly isolating them but as soon as I bring them together its the same result. Furthermore all the fry I am raising end up being skinny and sickly like they are carrying the same disease
  11. Best of luck Barny,If they are happy they should spawn weekly, don't be surprised if it takes them a few goes to get it right. They may still fight a bit Depending on temp the eggs should go dark after 48hrs and hatch after 60hrs You should know by 48hrs if you have a fertile male or not
  12. I know this post is 3 years old,but wanted to bring up this again as I have been having continuing problems with my guppies About a year and a half ago I got some guppies from a local breeder,I then added some from a LFS I added 2 of my virgin females to a blue moscow I just aquired, the females died over night, the moscow then wasted and died further more the other males I added to my guppy tank must have infected my stock as I have had issues ever since this. Every new male or female I introduce to the system goes on to waste away, some seem to be immune but very few I have quarantined, isolated individuals to no avail.Used PP,Levamisole, aquaflavin,Formalin & Malachite green,Salt and furan 2 but nothing seems to work. All I can conclude is that it is some sort of guppy virus. I am at the point of destroying my whole stock and starting again,Its been very frustrating. Are others still having these problems? is the uv the last resort? do you still use the uv jim r?
  13. Its possible the remaining discus could eat the eggs, because of the disturbance but it is the risk you take Don't put him back in until you have seperated the fry from the female Otherwise he might just eat the fry or beat the female up again or they will spawn again and eat the fry anyway The aggression could be possibly just because he is a young? male perhaps and he may grow out of it.
  14. Good males are hard to come by,some will fight regularly(not the perfect pair) Other males will fight for dominance over the eggs and fry I have had males really beat up females when carrying fry on there backs, they want to be the one to carry fry Pays to keep an eye on them if he is to aggressive towards the female or starts attacking the fry It is perfectly fine to remove him or her whichever you feel is the problem I have removed males and females before with good success just make sure they aren't overwhelmed by large spawns, can be stressful for one parent Best to get them on bbs early and remove sooner then usual so not to stress the parent If they have a good bond they will get back together again, even in a community tank
  15. Hi Chad, have they gone free swimming yet? :-?
  16. Cool :bounce: good luck with the pairing Both strains are dominant but I believe the snow white will trump the turq and all F1 will be white based fish with varying degrees of blue in them The beauty from this crossing will be the F2 crossing, that will be an interesting cross
  17. nice one what flavour are the parents?
  18. Cool I take it she is blue? what colour is the father?do you know? Do you get them straight onto Newly hatched baby brine shrimp or feed crumpled flake?
  19. Looking good Aquila!,can't wait to see them colour up even more
  20. I wouldn't take anything as granted, unless it says SL ,if not it could be TL
  21. Standard length is the start of the tail to the tip of mouth,on a large discus it would be more like 1.5 inches off the total length. I don't think there is anything wrong with your white butterfly and checkerboard pigeon, they are beautiful!
  22. You can measure discus standard length which is from tip of mouth to base of caudal fin, some measure using total length which is the whole fish tip of mouth to end of tail. 15 cm is a large discus especially if its standard length. Not all discus get to this size, in fact most won't unless given optimum growing conditions. The way you photograph the fish, which angle you capture the fish at can make the discus look good or bad.A nice fish can look quite bad captured at the wrong angle, also a stunted fish can look not to bad at the right angle.Your photos don't show the fish at the best angle.Best to take picture side on and front to back of the fish. If you are happy with them thats all that counts, who cares what others on the forums think. The people on the simply have great suppliers and breeders to choose the best fish available, they are a little spoilt for choice,we however have only limited availability of strains and quality.
  23. It is very hard to tell the age of a discus, large eyes small body size is generally a good bet that a discus is stunted, although some of the more modern strains are bred for smaller eye size. Also wild discus have larger eyes than domestics.Something else you should look at is body colour ,discus are slow to colour up,if you see them at 2 or 3 inch and fully coloured they will be alot older than you think.Body Shape is the most important thing to look at, don't buy discus that resemble footballs, a round shape is the most desirable. You will get the hang of judging what fish to buy and what not to soon enough. Its a pity that some lie about the age  and sell sub standard fish at to higher prices.

Hi Johnny,First time I have done this cross. Both parents are pigeon based, so all fry will be pigeons,at a guess I should get some of each and a mixture of both. I really don't know for sure, but my aim is for more white pigeons,we will see
