  1. Beautiful full body pattern(red turq I believe)and it is healthy you can tell by its vibrant colours but is a little behind in growth.Do you know the age? I would guess at being a female, but I can only be 50/50 on this  Feed her well as she looks a little skinny around the stomach area, plenty of water changes and see what happens Like Ron has said love to see the transformation to a round shape That looks like a beautiful planted tank you have Her colours look stunning against the planted backdrop
  2. Ron, here is a couple of pics of my spotted one,he is male and the only one of the 4 with spots Kyle
  3. Heres an easy way to do it - measurements need to be all in mm and only water volume,do not include glass thickness,so best to take on the inside of aquarium take the length x height x width and divide by 1,000,000 this will give you the number of litres of water e.g (450 x 450 x 450) ÷ 1000000 = 91.125 litres
  4. Cheers Ron thanks for the very clean fish from the four checkerboards I got from you all look a little different with one actually having spots How many generations back do you know of the genetics and was there a spotted fish back in the mix somewhere? Just curious to know I can put up a pic later if you want to see
  5. Yes this is one of the checkerboards I got off of Ron. I also had another 2, pair off of the checkerboards very early on in the piece and the female suffered a little with a slow down in growth but I have seperated them in a hope for some more growth I also have one other which is biggest of the 4 I got from Ron,which I also think is female but I am not 100%. Big girl that ,I find the female the hardest to get size on as they mature quicker and once they start laying eggs the growth slows down So you have done an excellent job there and good luck with the pairing.
  6. Hi Floater, yes the red one is a male red melon I have Only a small amount of peppering above the mouth and on the forehead as can be seen in the pic The female pigeon is clean as a whistle so I am hoping for some very clean fry from this pair.
  7. Cheers Ron, will do by the way the checkerboard pigeon is one of yours kyle
  8. Here is one of my pairs with 1 day old fry Only a small spawn, maybe only 20 fry all up
  9. Its sounds like you have a great pair there. Let them spawn 3-4 times in the community tank to form a good bond before you try and move them. A tank about 120 litres is a good size for a pair They will be more aggressive as a pair and will defend an area of the tank even when not spawning I have got pairs in community tanks and while more aggressive, the tank still ticks along fine, but you are unlikely to have any success in a community tank Fry can be grown on in small tanks but size needs to be increased as they grow The biggest thing is the time and effort it takes to grow out the batch Cull hard and only grow out the best that you can manage to raise in your available space. Love to see some of the fry when you succeed Good luck!
  10. Yeah and they are never really happy unless you get 5 or 6 at that size to grow out in a tank of there own
  11. I have used lots of different ingredients in my mix in the past but my last one consisted of - heart meat, liver, prawns, mussels, spinach, calcium carbonate, pro growth, multi vitamins, paprika 'flake food and discus bits. Slightly cook the liver and boil the spinach, some also cook there heart meat & mussels but I don't. I just use any flake that I have on hand and just chuck it in the mix no real measurements involved here. ox heart is the best heart meat to get as there is more meat and less fat which you need to cut out I have used sheep hearts as well but they are a pain, smaller and more fat and waste to cut out,but ok in a pinch while they are great for growing discus, heart meat recipes foul the water quick and you will need to compensate this with regular water changes.
  12. 50mm or greater is about the size you want to be buying them at, anything smaller can be a little more fragile. If you provide clean water, daily water changes or larger changes every 2nd or 3rd day you will have no problems, but daily is recommended with smaller discus for optimum growth. Bare bottom tank. ox heart mix, tetra bits, quality flake, bloodworms and earthworms are what I feed. frequency of feeding could be anywhere from 3-6 times a day or even more for younger discus If you can't change water daily, stick to 3 times If you plan on doing large daily changes then you can feed alot more and still keep good water conditions.
  13. They are to young to tell what they will eventually be. They may look like checkerboards at the moment but as they grow all the dots will more than likely join together to form striations. Its really impossible to tell without seeing the parents. If the parents are as stated then they are blue turq x red turq cross Its quite possible that as they mature they could be more either one or the other. A red turq has a red base colour with blue striations A turquoise or blue turq would blue stripe/striations over a brown base but would definately look more blue
  14. Vincent You always have such beautiful fish, Great looking pairs thanks for sharing Kyle
  15. Beautiful guppies Andrew, thanks for sharing the pics with us
  16. Hi Zayne, this is the bulk head that I use but they are called tank fittings, its a Hansen fitting and they come in a different range of sizes. You should be able to pick one up from plumbing world.Master trade may have them also http://www.hansenproducts.com/products/thread/SFTFT.htm
  17. I have been meaning to update this thread awhile back, but I got side tracked when I had to move my fishtanks out to the garage. Here are the fish a few months on. The tank has a tinted back thats why there is a bit of pepper on one of the discus, other than that they are really clean
  18. You need to see the spawning to know what are male/female You could do as Sam said and change the heater If you are doing regular water changes they will spawn again next week Congrats though I hope you have got yourself a pair :bounce:
  19. It is quite possible, this generally is pairing behaviour. Watch to see if they start shaking at each other, the female usually starts the courtship
  20. They do sell livestock, and in general they are a little steeper in price than most But they do have some great prices on aqua one products and I generally buy small stuff like airstones and food from them.
  21. Flosty

    Hiding Discus

That temp is just right Are they adults or juvies?,young discus tend to hide especially in a large tank like that. If you give them something to hide behind they generally take it.
  22. Flosty

    black disucs?

Yes really ill ones  But on a serious note, there is no black strain but there are heavily peppered discus which can be quite black
  23. Flosty

    Typical !

Good luck with that pair SuperGreen Try Leaving a small light on in the room or above the tank overnight I use those cheap LED dot it lights or a beside lamp with a low wattage bulb This way the parents can easily see and defend the eggs & wrigglers,Especially in community tank Hope they get it right for you
  24. Flosty

    Typical !

A water change with a drop of 2-3° can bring about spawning. But first just give them good clean water, daily changes and they will spawn for you on a weekly basis.
  25. $60 is cheap for a discus, go on take the plunge
