  1. Is that wood hill out in the waitakeres? i've only been there once but that was plenty lol.. Never going back again unless I want to get muddy/ exhausted/ petrified!
  2. Perhaps the cicadas could learn a thing or two from Charlie sheen..? Winning! :bounce:
  3. Yeah I think my filter can handle it. My main aim before setting up the tank was not to overload it till the filter would struggle. 700 liters for one arowana, a Pleco and some convicts.. I think the BB isn't sufficiently supported lol!
  4. lol, I didn't get the joke till I read the comments below.. Bill Amend is so funny but he's also such a nerd at times lol!
  5. Which is why you should! Why do you think we keep big fish? To eat all these annoying insects lol! No more cicadas chirping outside my window, I can tell you that..
  6. lol, I would've just caught both and thrown them into the tank! I actually have a video of a cicada vs my green arowana - no prizes for guessing who won lol.
  7. lol, these guys are some of the fastest growing fish I've ever seen. When I had mine, I think they nearly doubled in size within about 6 months, if memory serves. The best thing is that they will eat ANYTHING that lands on the bottom of the tank (or floats, come to think of it..) I used to feed mine sinking cichlid pellets, bloodworms, algae pellets, frozen whitebait (they go insane for this) and I loved to hear the clicking noise they make when they peck at their food. Really awesome fish, wouldn't mind going back to them again someday.

    I love SAE

:happy1: Guess who won't be retrenched from the tanks this year!
  9. Just as I slid one of the lids open during feeding time today my green took a bite of air/ water lol.. I'm observing that he's getting more agro when it comes to feeding and his appetite is increasingly recently. Hopefully I can resist the urge to overfeed so that he doesn't get too fat. I'm not sure, but I think he might be developing DE on one side.. &c:ry Just by visual comparison, one eye seems to "droop" a little bit more than the other but I'm not entirely sure. Personally, I reckon that DE is genetic, but I don't feed him fatty food anyway. I hope that it's not, but if it really turns out to be DE then it's bad genetic draw of the hand I guess..
  10. Rinse (what I always do before eating my fruits)
  11. But if you did, that's another excuse to install another fish tank in the house! I mean, if you're hiding from all the bombs, what better way to relax and pass the next decade than watching fish? :happy1:
  12. Oh, something else that came to mind.. I hope you've already heard that you can't use a net to transport puffers, it's better to use a container so that the puffer is not taken out of the water. I've read of cases when puffers were transported with nets, got stressed and gulped air. If the air is not expelled the puffer eventually dies. Just in case!
  13. Haha, thanks rabbit, that was what I meant. I was pretty surprised that the puffer was brave enough to take on the bichirs.. Probably the equivalent of a ten year old punching David tua lol..
  14. I was once told that ponds should be reserved for fish which are best viewed from the top, which I quite agree with. Rays would be really cool in a pond since they're not really best viewed from a tank, but damn our seasonal weather haha..
  15. Oohhh.. Probably not such a good idea. I've had a fig. 8 puffer before and he was VICIOUS. He used to bite the tails OFF my bichirs so he had to go lol. Their tails did grow back after a little while, poor guys. So yeah, don't put any fish with a puffer unless it's too big to eat/ has a tail which cannot be bitten off/ can move really quickly. I think schooling fish are a bad idea because all the puffer needs to do is swim into the school with an open mouth - he's bound to get something! Ideally, puffers should be kept alone, methinks.. (I know, it's not as cool..)
  16. I think arowana and discus could work, just be careful with the plecos. My arowana does not bother about the convicts at the bottom but somehow he loves to nip at my leopard pleco whenever he gets a chance. Nothing major, but I do often see little tears in my pleco's fins. I don't think the arowana is trying to eat it, but something about the fins must tempt him.. :dunno: Perhaps test the waters (literally) with a cheaper breed of pleco and see how your arowana reacts before dropping in the big money plecos..
  17. I agree, fish wellbeing is very important, but personally I like to place / design tanks so that it doesn't look like a tank. For example, I wouldn't put my tank anywhere I can't sit down in front of it to enjoy it. Similarly, I wouldn't just throw a whole lot of fish into a bare tank just to watch them swim around. I'm a shallow fish keeper, lol.. (no pun intended!) :bounce:
