I know, right?! We're such soft-hearted owners.. People say that they starve their aros for 10 days straight to get them onto pellets, but I don't think I have that kind of stamina haha. I'm sure if I'm persistent enough he will eat pellets only. I find that the Hikari floating sticks are still affordable, whereas Massivore is really expensive so that's reserved mostly for the ornate and the pleco - I want to see how big I can get them lol. Just curious what you guys think about the Japanese earthquake.. Do you reckon that the Hikari factory would have been affected, thereby making the fish food unsafe?

Nooo.. Honestly, get a group of at least 6 of them and they are like little puppies of the aquarium world. They swim around together and fight for food like puppies but they don't fight each other (in my experience).. One of the most fun schooling fish to watch - don't knock them till you've tried them!

You might also want to consider Hikari's smaller sinking carnivore pellets or larger massivore delite pellets. My convicts love them and the protein content is the highest of the Hikari range. Some people on the forum swear by it and say that their fish grew huge on massivore, so I'm testing the theory now on my sailfin pleco and ornate - I think my convicts have pretty much hit their max, any larger and they must be on steroids lol.

Funny you should say that, Nymox. I recently decided that once I'm through my box of pellet-stuffed frozen prawns for my aro, I'm just going to force him onto pellets one way or the other. Getting pretty tired of stuffing the pellets into the prawns which ultimately results in him eating more prawn mass than Hikari. At 17% protein content, I think the prawns just aren't worth the effort. Not looking forward to weaning him off prawns! :roll:

Good on you! You seem to be defying the eel's digestive system haha.. I don't have any evidence to back up whether cooked or raw is better for fish, but I reckon just keep it natural. In the wild, the fish is never gonna get a cooked meal ever, so it's probably not designed for that kind of food. If you compare a cooked prawn and a raw prawn, the cooked is much tougher than the raw, which tends to be mushier, so Henward might have a point there about their digestion. Besides, raw prawns aren't expensive, so why risk a fish over a few bucks? Just my 2c..

Might be even better if you added some fish food into the buckets just to let it rot and feed the bacteria.. Definitely cheaper than Stresszyme!

I think I saw one at HFF Albany last week.. Was probably around 10-20cm? Can't be sure because it was hiding, but definitely small enough to fit into one of their standard display tanks..

I think I read somewhere a while ago that temperature changes can kill off the bacteria.. So if the water in the tank is 25 deg, adding too much colder water will cause a sudden drop, thereby killing the bacteria. I usually do 40-50% without any problems during summer, so my suspicion is that it was the water temperature change.

Well, I did it again.. I think I crashed some of my bacteria colony yesterday during a water change. &c:ry I normally do 50% weekly and top it up from the hose which is fine during summer but I keep forgetting that it's getting colder. :facepalm: My self-denial has resulted in too great a temperature change which bacteria obviously do not like. Take heed to my words, fellow fish keepers and don't repeat my mistake haha.. Smaller water changes over winter will prevent an ammonia spike. Anyway, measures have been put in place. Specifically, feeding has been suspended and 10% water changes are being done daily. I'm glad that the ammonia only spiked to 1.0 instead of an 8.0!
