  1. Do adults still jump as much? Mine is still an unruly teenager who likes to test the limits and give the lid a little thump now and then, which gives me a mini heart attack because of the noise but at the moment he's not strong enough to pop the lids (yet). I'm assuming that when he gets big he will be able to at least knock the lids out of place, but I'm hoping that he will be mellow enough not to..
  2. Sorry, I'm just going to come out and say it - that would look really hideous in a backyard. I reckon it just defeats the purpose of having a pond lol.. You have to peer into that little peephole just to watch the fish swim around! If you're gonna do it, you might as well spend the cash and go for the jungle themed greenhouse pond. Sure, you'd never be able to take a holiday ever again, but you can always take a walk to your backyard and imagine that you're in a tropical jungle lol.. Can't beat that convenience!
  3. lol, I hope you are studying to become the next Mark Zuckerburg.. You'll need the money to run your exotic set ups haha..
  4. Well, since the world is coming to an end, we might as well follow conventional wisdom and remember to put on clean underwear. That way, come bus or tsunami, volcano or earthquake, Tom Cruise on a spaceship or zombie invasion, we can rest assured that we've done our due diligence. :happy2:
  5. I've read somewhere that livebearers often give birth when under stress, eg getting caught into a bag and swished around on the drive home..
  6. Congrats! I used to have pearl danios (IIRC) but they never did anything for me, especially not after just 24 hours! My quickest spawns would have to be jewel cichlids and convict cichlids. Both spawned within a week of being introduced into their tanks. But 24 hours! They don't waste any time, lol! :happy2:
  7. Even though the wood is hard and heavy, it still needs time to become "waterlogged". That's why if you compare the driftwood you find in your LFS, it will look different from the piece of wood you're boiling (I presume). Once your wood has successfully waterlogged, it will sink like a rock and it will also look different from its current condition. 'Saturation' is the technical term for wood soaking up water, lol. If Anthony's method is too complicated for you, just tie some rocks to the wood and submerge it in clean water until it sinks on its own. Alternatively, you can just let it float in the water till it sinks, but apparently this method takes longer. HTH.
  8. Nice one, Ira. I've got half an ice cream box in the freezer of prawns which have been meticulously trimmed of any sharp bits, halved and stuffed with Hikari pellets. Took me more than 2 hours, but I won't have to do it again for another 2 months (I hope!) If only I were this onto-it with other aspects of my life (eg uni) lol! :bounce:
  9. Did you tell it to stop playing with its food?
  10. I don't know about David's experiences, but my green is quite "controlled" with its diet. It's diet consists of two pellet stuffed prawns every night which it is really keen on, but once a week, guaranteed, it will fast itself of one meal. There is no pattern or logic behind it (that I have observed). The prawns are all similar in size so it's not exceptionally full on any one night and there is no circumstance which would stress it to induce fasting (eg water change). However, the next night, it'll go back to normal. It's almost like it has a "shut off" system in the brain to stop it from overeating (I wish I had that, lol).

    Demotivators!

That life jacket one is pretty harsh, lol! Not sure whether or not to laugh.. Kinda feel sorry for the guy bleeding out! But with regards to the woman who thought that an elephant was bigger than the moon, I wonder how she even managed to get past the fastest fingers round.. :dunno:

    Mealworms

Firstly, too lazy (lol) and secondly, I've always found that earthworms are so hard to clean before feeding.. So much hassle for such a little worm!

    Mealworms

Hi all I've just been wondering to myself recently what the rest of you thought of mealworms as part of a fish's diet..? Personally, I reckon that of all the insects that are fed to fish, mealworms are the easiest to raise and catch to feed, not to mention the fact that they are the easiest to gut load with pellets. Henward has sworn to me that feeding his RTG live food has triggered some sort of instinctive hormonal growth spurt (a claim that I'm currently trying on my green) and I figure, if nothing else, live food just helps the fish retain some of its natural hunting instinct. However, I've also heard comments from people that mealworms have little nutritional value and are high in fat. I wonder though, how much truth is there to these claims? Curious to hear what you guys think about feeding/ not feeding mealworms to your fish..
  14. Har. Har. :happy2:
  15. To be honest, don't use a laptop unless you absolutely need it on the go. After 5 years of laptopping, i'm going to save up a bit later this year and get a good CPU, hook it up to a nice tv and go wireless keyboard/ mouse with some nice speakers for an all round media experience haha..
  16. That's so buzzy! Wonder if it will work on all fish types or just those than can be acclimatized to brackish..?
  17. Alternatively, just hang on to it! The laptop which I am now typing on is approximately 5 years old (a geriatric in geek years) and I have considered upgrading many times but I knew that I would never get a decent amount for it and I couldn't stand the thought of throwing away a functioning laptop. Long story short, I'm writing on a Windows XP, 1.73 GHz laptop with a miserly 80GB of memory. Ironically, my iPad doesn't get as much of a workout as this old horse, but by now it's sentimental haha (and I like to see the faces of friends when they see my laptop specs ) Resist the urge to sell.. Save up and get a new one, but who knows? Maybe you can sell your HP as a relic in a few more years lol..
  18. We're all hoping along with you Adrienne, please keep us updated once you hear back from him. I'm sure he's ok. My sister is in Chch as well and she said that the shaking wasn't really really bad so the main thing is how sturdy your father's house is. If it's strong then I'm sure he's ok.
  19. In what world is that the small side? lol, lucky fish!
  20. Can't beat the Parnell Farmer's Market, still my favourite. Mostly food and produce but good place for brekkie. Best way to describe it's location is the old blind foundation building below auckland museum. It's such a word of mouth place because nobody really knows how to describe where it is haha..

    Eggs

How'd they manage that??! Wonder if it's real egg or the artificial made-in-china stuff lol..

    Eggs

Haha, you know you can always trust McD's for the most rubbery, shell-specked, cold omlettes around. Thankfully, they make up for it with their muffins haha. !drool: ..Something to think about while at the gym tomorrow morning!
  23. I agree with Ethanyo, it's not so much how many sponge filters but how much water change. I've read somewhere before that fish fry actually release a chemical or substance into the water which is a growth inhibitor. By slowing down the growth of its siblings, each fry stands a higher chance of getting bigger and surviving better (theoretically). Apparently, daily water changes are the only way to counter this (10-25%), but your hard work will be paid off with bigger, faster growing fry which will ultimately be healthier. The more water changes you are prepared to do, the less sponge filters you'll need in the tank. But if it's a only fry tank my estimation is that two would suffice, with lots of water changes.
