  1. Erm, I think it will be alright? Just go in to your LFS and look at tanks as close to those dimensions as you can so you can see if it looks alright.
  2. lol, height isn't the issue, it's the depth.. The height is simply aesthetically symmetrical to the depth.

    Eggs

I'm very particular about my eggs haha.. I'll eat scrambled, sunny side up (runny yolk), poached (rarely) but NEVER hard boiled. The taste/ texture are so different when hard boiled that they could almost be considered another food.. *shudder*
  4. The setup looks good, Sam! Man, your lighting is pretty intense in the pic haha! 8) Quick tip for the backing paper, instead of using double sided tape, go to Spotlight and get 'Off and On Glue'. That stuff is awesome. Just put a thin line along the edges of the tank and wait 5 min for it to dry, then paste the backing paper on. If you misplaced it, just pull it off and stick it back on. To clean it off, just use some warm soapy water. I used this glue for my black backing paper and I'm never using double sided tape again. If you put it on right, you can't see it from inside the tank (unlike DS tape). Also useful if water seems between the tank and the backing paper (inevitable). HTH!
  5. I remember my Fluval 105 working very efficiently and quietly.. I have had it running in my bedroom and the living room at different stages and it didn't affect my studying/ sleeping/ TV watching. But, if you have the money, go for the Eheim.
  6. Thanks, if you look real close, you can see the bit of mealworm peeking out of his mouth in that pic..
  7. ..perfect for some photo shooting. :happy1: Technical jargon for shutterbugs: Canon 50D: 18-135mm @ 1/320, F3.5; ISO 2500 (I know, I know, the ISO is a little high but the noise wasn't very noticeable until I'd uploaded the pics but I would say that it's within the acceptable range for me; just can't blow these pics up. Next time the ISO is going down!)
  8. I think we fish-keepers get flak for our pets because people always think that you can't cuddle a fish or teach it any tricks. Call me crazy but I feel more emotionally bonded with my fish than my dog lol.. I'll walk into the house, straight past my dog and go check on the tank haha! :happy2: Sorry, pooch!
  9. Yeah.. Never thought about puffers haha.. Nymox's puffer is already showing its fangs in the pics. Might even give you a wee fracture if it wanted to methinks..

    Convict Fry

My convicts have recently become parents, which was always expected, but it's not exactly feasible to remove the fry from the tank due to tank size/ hiding spaces/ lack of fry tank. Anyway, I'm OK with leaving them in, but my question is, what happens next? Will this batch of fry grow out and start eating their future siblings or will the bottom of my tank be filled with feeder convicts? To be honest, I'm quite surprised that the parents didn't eat any of the fry (to my knowledge).
  11. D-Hawk, if you're 12 and are already suffering from MTS, in a few years dating is going to be super fun haha! Although.. It could serve as a pick up line..? "Wanna come over and look at my fish tanks?"

    The Death Row Game

Mmmmm.. I'm not from SA but there's always a special spot in my stomach for biltong haha. Especially when grated over baked potatoes with mayo. !drool:
  13. How'd he even expect to get through customs?? Even if the animals didn't make a single squeak from the bags in transit, surely he would've thought about the x-ray lol.. Never expect someone not to be dumb enough to try something haha..
  14. What about oscars? I've never had one, but I've seen the one at Animates Mt Eden and that one honestly looks like he could take a finger if he bit hard enough lol..
  15. Not sure what I'd be more worried about, the bite wound or the possibility of infection.. I know a guy who used to work in a pet store and he had an open wound from a splinter which he (not very wisely) exposed to an african cichlid tank.. Long story short, the wound didn't heal for weeks and he ended up going to hospital to get stitches and antibiotics. Very possible that he's the first/ only (don't quote me) person in NZ to have this specific infection.. Apparently it only occurs in a certain African lake lol..

    The Death Row Game

I sure hope not! I'll never know that guy won a world record for eating kilos of worms..

    The Death Row Game

Umm.. In my defense, the scenario was put in place just to simulate what you would eat for a last meal.. It was never intended to break any forum rules or stir up religious/ political controversy.. Guess now that the can o' worms have been opened, I'll have to eat 'em!
  18. That's exactly what I mean! Thing is, my aro isn't as quick off the mark as yours was, so I have to dangle it for a few seconds before releasing when he's near, otherwise it'll fall to the bottom and I'll have to roll up my sleeves.. When I first got him, he used to eat very gently from my hand but after a few days it's just CHOMP.. Maybe he likes the airtime haha, but he REFUSES to eat food off the floor even though he knows that it's a prawn and he just saw it drop down but didn't catch it in time.. :an!gry

    The Death Row Game

@Bishop - you must be the kindest inmate around haha! Personally, I'd go for some big time comfort food.. Probably a home-made lasagna or spaghetti lol..

    The Death Row Game

Simple game, but interesting to see the replies.. Scenario: you are on death row and you're headed to the green mile tomorrow morning. You get one last meal on earth, anything you want.. What's it gonna be?
  21. This may sound like a dumb question, but honestly every night when I feed my green aro, I have to be very conscious of where he is simply because he gets so excited during feeding. I can't drop the prawns in because he only feeds from the top (hand feeding is the most effective) but when he goes for the prawn, it's like jaws! I know that his bites don't really hurt but man, his speed and his tendency to splash water everywhere never fails to give me an instinctive fright.. It's not a phobia, but I'd call it a healthy respect for monster fish haha.. Am I alone in this?
  22. Fishie, how long is Albany willing to hold the fish for you? If you haven't got the tank and stand made already, you're looking at a considerable amount of time before the fish hits the water.. Things to factor in are: 1. The time/ cost to make the tank/ stand/ sump (unless you can buy something ready to go) 2. Getting the tank into the house (either gather every friend you have or hire someone to do it) - it's a bigger job than you first think.. 3. The cycling period (depending on how fast you can get it up to speed, but if you want a good fish in the long run then I'd say get as much bacteria in there as you can) All up, you're probably looking at approximately 1-2 months..? Probably closer to 2, IMO. Also remember that the juvenile period of arowanas is key to their long-term growth, so they need lots of space/ good food/ good water. I'm sure Albany will provide the food/ water conditions but space might be an issue. Just some things to think about.. Hope this helps! P/S Also worth considering what kind of floor the tank will be going on, since 1 litre of water = 1kg (not to mention the weight of the tank/ sump/ stand which would all add up)
