  1. Yes it's fine to use second hand. I'd boil it, or rinse it really well and leave it out in the sun for a couple of days. Put the fish in a bucket, it's a lot less stressful for them. It's good if you can save most of their water, then you can totally empty the tank so it's not so messy. Boil it to get the bugs out, or just buy a new one if that's an option. Don't change the filter and the gravel at the same time though, you'll get rid of all the good bacteria and the tank will have to re-cycle. That's quite alright. pH is ok, water changes will keep it a bit higher. It generally does drop naturally because the fish wastes are acidic (low pH). It's controversial, but lots of people don't add stress coat when changing the water. Personally, I think it's a huge waste of money, just do regular changes and don't pour the water right on top of the fish. Good luck!

    That's cuz they're mostly nocturnal
  3. They're really cute! What sort of pleco are they? What do they eat?

    CO2

Ok cool. Might stick with what I'm doing (turn lights on in morning, off at night, feed fish ).

    CO2

Hmmm, that sounds hard and expensive. Someone once told me that to grow their plants, they make up a bottle of sodastream, and pour it into the tank each day. Think it'll work?
  6. I do the same thing; semi photographic memory. I can remember where something was written, the shape and colour, but not what it says. Using colour to jog my memory works great.
  7. I used to do that, and I'd end up with everything I needed to know. I found colourcoding and sticking things up everywhere worked well for me. I'd stick in on the back of the toilet door and outside the shower. Seeing them all the time helped normalise the material. Keyworks in colour were good because I could take the felt pens into the exam which helped jog my memory.
  8. Have they been shimmying always or just lately? Do you know their sex?
  9. How's all the studying going guys? What are your studying methods? Edit: I'm such a geek
  10. Wow, those looked fantastic. Does anyone have some pics of their own I can see. Can you handle frogs?
  11. Do you have a price in mind? I think this could be an awesome project.
  12. Yup And poping isn't a word...there's no verb 'to pope', it's a noun.
  13. She. I agree that they need a smaller tank while they're with their parents, but once you move them they need a big space to grow
  14. My angels that have been eating their young and eggs everytime have finally got some to hatch, and have had them for a few hours without eating them. The mum and dad keep picking up the ones that get away in their mouths and popping them back on the suction cup they're living on. I hope they can get them to survive!
  15. Discus need a pretty big grow out tank. For 38, you'd need a 3ft to start with.

    Chocolate australe

As a general rule, the warmer the temp, the quicker the eggs develop. That might explain why the 27deg ones have 'eyes' and the 22deg don't.
  17. IOU, keep in mind that you're doing really different subjects, so clashes could be an issue. It's likely to take you a whole extra year to do you degrees because the classes aren't streamlined to fit together.
  18. And that, friends, is why I do all my downloading at uni!! :bounce: :bounce:

    CO2

I've decided I want a heavily planted tank. How do I know when to add CO2? What does it actually do to help, and what does a CO2 setup look like?
  20. Stella, I know what you mean than you can't wait to go back...I've decided to do summer school (and start ANOTHER degree ) so I don't have to wait 3 months. What are all you guys doing next yr when you finish school? I think this thread would do much better as course advice for 2009 and NCEA last minute exam help
